in any case, this is copied/pasted from wordperfect, so it's KIND of weird looking.. preview button says it's a little odd, but not so bad as to keep from posting it. from now on i'll have to write these in this window..
enjoy.
seven suns
.... skirmish
Gauss slugs tore through the night as Aran kept his trigger down... A mutalisk raced across the battlefield sky, it's clumsy bat-wings flapping awkwardly as the monster soared at impossible speeds... he saw the blood spurt from fresh holes in its side, keeping his crosshair on the beast... a marine to his left turned, seeing the flying creature, and began to lay waste to it as well.
Aran saw it coming.. The white, spinning projectile that spawned from the mutalisk's insides... the glave wurm rocketed towards the marine near him, so fast it was too hard to keep in sight... green acidic liquid trailed from it, creating a visible ‘echo' of its path.
Aran kept his finger down as the high-pitched whine increased, and the sawlike glave wurm blasted into the other marine's helmet.. Instantly he was knocked back, his plexiglass shattered, his rifle disappearing into the distance... the marine fell to his back in a daze. Aran had but miliseconds to prepare as the voracious projectile bounced at tremendous speed, aiming straight at him... he grunted and struggled to keep balance as the thing hit him in the side like a high-speed brick, bouncing again as it disintegrated and fell to the ground.
He hadn't let go of the trigger, and he opened his eyes to see the screeching flyer with one wing blown off and its body mutilated... the mutalisk began its descent towards rock at impossible speed.
Aran kept it in sight as the zerg monstrosity plummeted out of the sky, smashing suddenly against the rocks as it skid into pieces... blood covered the entire area of its disintegration.
The sound still deafening, Aran looked back to the marine who was looking for his rifle while tearing the useless shattered glass away from his face. Aran winced as the ear-splitting roar of arclite siege cannons blasted... he looked to the base to see glave wurms tearing at men and walls... he could make out the faint glow of medic's medkits plugged into encounter suits and firebat armor... fire skirted everything as firebats laid waste to any zerg unit foolish enough to come near.
Aran kept looking about, glad to be on sentry duty for once. He saw waves of swift zerglings converging on tanks and bunkers in the distance, heard the familiar sound of fragmentation grenades crackling as vultures sped about... then he saw it, just coming into view... four zerglings racing in his direction.
"Shit!" he cried as he pushed up his plexiglass. "Come on!!" he shouted to the marine near him. "There's four ‘lings running straight for us!!"
The marine bent quickly, retrieving his rifle from behind a desert shrub, and then raced back towards Aran. He looked and saw the speedy creatures closing distance quick, and began to run for some sort of cover. Aran joined him.
"Listen," Aran shouted as they ran as fast as they could towards some trees. "If we can make it to the trees, we might be able to fend them off.."
The soldier didn't reply, just kept running towards cover.
Aran looked behind him... the zerglings were too near.. He could hear their claws hitting dirt as they sped across the dry sandy desert... a rhythmic thumping that was getting louder.
The trees embraced them like a mother, as they both stood behind one and prepared their rifles. Aran pushed his plexiglass back down and leveled his rifle. The zerglings were already too close... he let loose his ammunition.
Magnet-propelled slugs shot out at just barely sublight speeds, ripping at the stonelike carapaces of the zerglings... the other marine was concentrating on a single zergling, and Aran joined him as the creature shrieked... it was mere seconds before it crumpled to a mutilated heap, skidding across the desert floor.
Aran barely had enough time to aim at another zergling as they both concentrated again... the three beasts sped towards the other marine... another zergling had lost most of its back carapace when it leaped at the marine... its claws tore at his infantry armor as the marine slammed his rifle into the beast's gut and blasted it away... The 2 zerglings both leaped at the marine...
Their combined weight was too much, and the marine buckled and tumbled back onto the floor... Aran's adrenaline raced as he ceased firing in fear of hitting the marine...
The two zerglings tore at his suit, ripping it to shred as he attempted to bat them away from his face... a metal shriek and a gaping crevice was in the suit's chest, red blood seeping out... Aran heard the marine's scream as a zergling batted away his arm and plunged a claw into the marine's face... the body went limp.
It hit Aran like an electric shock and he began firing wildly... one zergling had caught its claw in the marine's face, and was struggling to be free, rolling on its back and almost snapping its limb off... Aran braced himself against the tree, his back solid to it, as the other zergling leaped at him.
He felt his suit give way as its claws raked down his chest... the creature hit him hard, but he kept focused as he fired upon it... it slid down, ready to attack again, when Aran plunged his rifle to its head and laid waste to its animal brain... the zergling's corpse slid down to the ground, when he looked wildly for the other one.
Apparently it was still caught, and it HAD dislocated its arm attempting to be free. Aran raised his rifle and began to fire.
A half-second of rhythmic gauss fire when he heard a ‘click'. No slugs were being fired.
He cursed and looked wildly for something to protect him as he panicked. He had struck the zergling's arm and severed it, and the creature screamed as it hobbled towards him at a fair speed.
Aran roared and charged at the creature, holding his rifle as a club.. The three-legged zergling ran clumsily towards him as he swung his rifle downwards...
The rifle hit with a resounding smash, breaking in two against the zergling's carapace.. The beast screeched and flipped backwards, a large bloody crack in its head from the impact... the creature rolled on the ground from the pain as Aran approached it... throwing his rifle, he gritted his teeth as he knelt and grabbed the zergling's arm... the beast kicked fiercely, almost throwing him away, as Aran pushed its claw to its throat... he strained against the beast's strength as he pressed the claw to its neck until it couldn't go further... he put his knee against its stomach and with a grunt of effort pushed the creatures claw through its neck.
Instantly the beast stopped moving, its head only half-connected and its claw in the middle of its neck. Aran instantly rolled onto his back, breathing hard from his effort. He crawled into some bushes as camouflage, and instantly fell into sleep.
He awoke some time later, pushing up his plexiglass and looking about... it seemed as if it had been a dream of sorts as he dragged himself out of the shrub, coughing as dry desert sand entered his lungs... he felt a pain in his chest from where the zergling had attacked him, as hastily checked himself... there was a gaping tear in his pressure suit, but no visual harm done to him.
He looked about, seeing the marine's corpse covered in dust and blood, the zergling's arm still wedged inside his neck... Aran grimaced as he averted his eyes from the gory sight... the 4 zergling corpses were still there, smeared red with blood and mutilated with shell holes... his broken rifle lay in two pieces, quite a fair distance apart.
He walked over to the marine's body, kicking a zerglings corpse for good measure as he searched for the marine's rifle... he found it near the root of one of the sparse trees and picked it up, getting a quick ammo check of 172... a fair amount... the marine must have been full when they encountered the mutalisk.
Aran hadn't even made conversation... they had both been drafted as sentries for the night, and they had both tromped off without saying a word to each other... he felt strange as he looked at the blood-covered body, that he didn't knew the man at all.
He dismissed the thoughts and turned around, walking through the trees to get a look at the base... he expected to begin heading back without even checking for the marine's nametag... chances are the zerglings had shredded it to pieces.
He rounded a tree and gasped as he saw the base... he grabbed his ribs in pain of simply intaking the air, almost in complete disbelief... the walls were gone, only slabs of scattered rock and metal about to even confirm they existed. Buildings were shattered... the command center's windows had been broken out, every single one he could see... no lights could be seen anywhere in the entire base... it all seemed silent, like a ghost town... smoke was rising from flaming wreckage, and Aran could make out piles of corpses... whether they were zerg or terran he couldn't discern. Giant blotches of blood coated the rear canyon wall of the base.
He began to run towards the shattered base, but the pain in his ribs and realization hit him hard... Ara Mejor had been destroyed... there were probably dozens of zerg burrowed inside it, rejuvenating from the attack... if he was to return he would almost certainly be killed.
Even as he thought this, he could barely make out a pack of 3 mutalisks in the far distance, flying away from the base like specks... he quickly decided against returning and headed back into the sanctity of the trees.
He sighed, dropping his rifle to the ground and sitting back against a tree. He thought intently about what to do; where to go... there was another base that he'd seen forces moving to far to the north on Kandar Ridge, but him walking alone would take at least a week to reach...
He briefly considered returning to Ara Mejor in hopes of finding an intact vulture, but the thought of a monstrous zerg creature rising from the ground quelled that thought.
He closed his eyes, breathing deep... there would certainly be zerg scouts running through, so he realized that his position was insecure.
Thoughts raced through his mind as he peered out of the trees to see the same mutalisk pack circling widely, continuing their patrol... he stared at the rear canyon wall, just beyond this oasis's border and spotted a hole in it... a cave he could probably climb to that would conceal him long enough for him to figure out what to do.
He nodded to himself. He picked up his rifle quickly and rose as he began walking.
