| Fun with Lurkers | | | Author: | | | IP: | XXXX | | Date: | 05/12/99 11:05 | | Game Type: | Starcraft | | Labels: | Starcraft(1), Text Only(1) | | Report Rating: , # of Ratings: 1, Max: 7, Min: 7 Lifetime Rating for _Prospero_: 7.5000 | | The game started in nohunters as a 3v3 on Orbital Death. Since two of the players dropped in the beginning of the game, we agreed to continue as a 2v2. The teams were:
mark4 Protoss, top left
_Prospero_ Zerg, bottom right
vs
Johnny_Vegas Terran, middle lower right
WarriorPrincess Terran, middle upper right
My first thought was "Cool, I'm with mark4, I can't lose!" Then I noticed something. In the beginning of the game, Johnny had accidently shared vision with me. I knew he was Terran and I knew right where he was. Moments before we had been discussing Terran difficulty with lurkers. So I went for a straight lurker rush.
I knew he would be prepared for early lings, so I decided to skip them. I got an extractor on 8, 9 pool, 11 sunken. The sunken finished just in time to fend off a pesky scouting SCV. I then build a den, hydra, and two more sunkens. Right when I was in the middle of morphing 3 lurkers, he shows up at my front door with 12 marines and 2 medics. He makes them do and end run around my sunkens and behind my minerals. For some reason they delayed a couple secs before firing. He managed to kill three drones before my lurkers finished. I burrowed them, and he retreated. A fourth lurker finished a few secs later and I chased him back to his base.
About this time mark4 had found WarriorPrincess and was smacking her base with zealots. He said he was getting d/ts soon.
Using hit and run tactics, Johnny managed to kill one of my lurkers en route to his base. When I arrived, I found one bunker out in the open, and unfinished turret, and an unfinished ComSat. All were swiftly dispatched.
He managed to lift off his command center, 2 rax, and an ebay. They and a few of his SCVs that survived headed toward the center. I planted my lurkers to take out his fixed buildings. I took the opportunity to move up some just finished lurkers, order some hydras, lay down a second hatch and a spire.
I looked over at mark4, who was now wailing on WarriorPrincess with some d/ts. He was doing a remarkable job of killing unfinished turrets. Figuring he needed no assistance, I looked back at my base.
A scouting overlord confirmed that Johnny was mining the center. His choke that faced me had a full bunker and a turret , with two rax outside. My force of 5 lurkers and 6 hydras easily took out the raxii while staying out of range of the bunker. The bunker itself was not so easy. As soon as I started to attack it, Johnny ran about 8 SCVs to repair it. Soon he had only one SCV left, but he had killed three of my lurkers. Two lurkers that were outside detection range continued to peck away at the bunker.
I started to look for a nice expansion so I could pump mutas, but it turned out to be unneccesary. mark4 had finished with WarriorPrincess and was attacking the other side of Johnny's base with d/ts. At this point we all said gg and allied.
Lessons learned
For me: Do more macro instead of concentrating on watching battles. Know when to retreat. Tighter placement of defensive buildings.
For Johnny: Infantry sucks v lurkers. Fast detection, fast tanks.
Sorry, no screen shots avaliable.
(PS I must apologize if I embarass you, on your new forum no less, with a tale of your defeat by a relative newbie :-P ) |
