BONUS: Can any one tell me what quote from what Famous Adventure game I paraphrased to get the title?
Once upon a time, there was a man named Fractal_Wave. He liked to play StarCraft, a happy game from the good fairies at Blizzard Entertainment. One evening when Fractal_Wave was romping in the woords, looking for a game to play, he stumbled upon a badly-painted sign, saying
"Ladder 1000++"
On the sign there was an arrow pointing to a button. Fractal_Wave pushed the button, and...
decided to stop the fairy-tale format, 'cause it was making him puke with its sweetness. Nor is he sure how the Blizzard peopel will like being called "fairies". Nor his e sure why he is speaking in the 3rd person.

MAP = Los...Rivalry.
(had you going there, didn't I?)
I was getting bored of temple (read: i had been losing on it a lot), so i decided to find a game on one of those 5 or 6 other ladder maps out there....

Fractal_Wave, Random (Zerg)
NIGHTSTALKER., Terran
By now i'm thinking a number of things:
#1.) A chosen Terran is a real rarity these days...it means one of three things:
a)i'm facing a newbie who's just learning the game,
b)i'm facing Heartcutter or Crexis smurfing,
c)i'm just facing a guy who likes terran
If a, i win, and this'll be a boring report.
If b, i lose, but it'll be a really, really, pimpin' report
If c, i have no idea what will transpire.
What's your vote??
#2.) I really, really , really hope i get zerg or protoss, so i can cloak-contain them with lurkers or Dark Templar.
With the aforemention thoughts racing through my head, we begin the game.
Early-Game Shenanigans
I appear in the bottom-right corner, with the weird, buzzing music of the zerg greeting me. I give thanks to the gods of StarCraft (who are they anyways?), and begin.
*NOTE: At no point in this game, did i ever stop drone production if i could help it. A strong economy is key to winning, especially with zerg
My overlord does not scout, as my victim is terran, and will have marines to pop the aforementioned overlord. I decied to be risky and forgo early scouting by either drones or zerglings for pure economic power.
Here i'm hoping my opponent is not a student of 1999, or I will have a 6-pack of infantry up the postierior soon.
I build up to 10/9 drones, then get a 2nd hatchery, an overlord, and a spawning pool. I keep up with drone production while my pool builds, and build an extractor somewhere in here. I also build a sunken-colony-to-be between my gas and my minerals. this would save my @ss later on.
Then everything pops at once. My pool finishes, my colony finishs, my extractor finishes and my hatchery finishes. I begin training 4 zerglings to hunt down my opponent. I also upgrade my colony to a sunken, and get a drone on gas.
My zerglings burst out of their eggs, and i send two to the top right corner, and two to the bottom left. I build about six more zerglings while i wait for scouting info.
I find the terran scum in the bottom left, as my lings run in to a scouting marine. A rip, a tear, two shreds and a few kapows later, one marine is dead, and one zergling is dead. My other ling charges boldly up the ramp, yearning for revenge...and get blasted to his component atoms by a bunker on the hill..
~sigh~
This will be a tough nut to crack.
But i've won the first round. I know where he is, and he doesn't know where i am. Regretably, i don't know what he's doing. I assume that he will bust it out with tanks and go for a tank push, or hop up to Science Vessels + Irradiate to counter act my lurkers.
I take two lings and send them to guard the bridges around his natural. I do NOT want this fish expanding. A terran with money is a frightening thing. Expanding is to be the sole province of the zerg this game. Back at home I build a hydralisk den, preparing for the nessecary lurkers.
Now i make a game-breaking decision. I want to expand my self, but my natural is minerals-only. And minerals-only will not help me maintain an army of hydralisks. I decide to bust it out with a nude expansion to the 6:00 expansion, and pray to all the gods that it remains und-discovered.
My remaining four zerglings escort the drone to his new home. I build 6 more lings to hold my choke until my den finishes, and the "hydra hordes" come out to play. I lay down an Evo-chamber for those all-important upgrades.
(Note to Heartcutter: who wins in 3/3 marine vs. 3/3 hydras? Most zergies don't upgrade very much, so it's probably fairly rare...)
I also start mutating my lair.
My hatch is a-building @ the 6:00 site. Back at the ranch, my den finishes, and three hydras join 6 lings at my choke point.
Then, oh the horror of it, 3 marines meet my zergling at the bridge, and introduce him to Mr. Rifle. My zergling goes to the big creep colony in the sky. My evo-chamber finishes, and I start researching missle attack.
Now those three mean ol' marines come to my ramp, and are met by three bigger, uglier hydralisks and a bunch of zerglings. They turn tail and flee like rabbits.
=)
I wait a while, and then follow them down to make sure i don't get bunkered in. Excellent. They've gone. I dispatch two lings to cover the bridges, and return my forces to my ramp. I also burrow 2 zergling at the 9:00 expansion, as it's the closet one to him with gas.
Middle Game Maneauvers
My lair finishes. I begin researching the dreaded lurker aspect. heeheehee.
My 6:00 xpansion is up and running, with two sunkens for defence. I've got about 6 hydras at my ramp, when a tiny blue dot appears on my mini-map. Right near my base. Oh dear. this is bad.
I look, and see a drop ship unloading 7 marines and a medic. how depressing. i grab my hydras, and rush them down to the scene of the crime, hoping to catch the perps in the act.
Alas, un-upgraded hydras are slightly slower that molasses on a cold day.
Not alas though, is that one sunken i had plunked down beside my extractor. it begins to attack the maurading marines. And, by a happy coincidence, my evo-chamber and my hydra den are between them and it.
w00p.
As the marines get beaten on by my sunken, my hydras show up and remove them. But they killed the sunken. sigh. I rebuild the sunken, lurkering finishes, i begin researching overlord speed and burrow. I also morph 1 hydra in to a lurker, with plans for more. I keep pumping out the hydras.
My 1st lurka appears, and i send him out to test the defenses. He scurries up enemy ramp, burrows, and get smacked down as there's a turret sitting behind the bunkers. Also a seige tank. My my. this could be trouble.
My 2nd lurka goes and sits in my opponet's natural, just begging him to come out and get spiked. By now i've got about 12 hydras in my main, with 6 + lurka #3 at my choke. I'm researching transporting. I lay down a 2nd hatch at my 6:00 expansion.
Right about now, i feel the need to scout. I send one overlord towards his base, feeling sure that it will die, but i have to know what he's gonna do.
My overlord gets to his base, and see's a truely frightenig site: a wraith.
As my overlord runs like a worm back to base, pursued by the wraith, I see two dropships following it. hmm. I grab my choke hydras and lurker, and burrow them right where I expect the drop to be. I've got a total of about 20 hydras burrowed here and there in my base. His wraith looks around, and then he scan the drop sight! The cunning rogue!
This reaveals my 8 hydras + lurka waiting for him. He wisely declines to drop.
Now, here is where I was stupid. I didn't make the connection that him not dropping my main would equal him looking for a place to drop.
Soon after, that same wraith over-flies my expansion. I think: "Oh dear. better get a few hydras out to deal with that".
So I get my few hydras (four). And i'm thinking that no paper airplane wraith is gonna kill me!
*click* is the sound of my brain turning on. I burrow my peons and run my overlords away. I also think back to my previous losses. Every time, i've had a squad away killing an expansion, and i get hit with the brunt of my enemies troops. I decide to do the same.
Loading up 24 hydras in to my 6 overlords, i set out for my victim's base. Meanwhile, my expansion has been blown to hell. I swear revenge.
End Game: "Want some Wrath? 'Course ya do!"
My overlords are assaulted by a missile turret, but manage to land all the hydras before an overlord is dispatched.
I begin rampaging through the back of my opponent's base.
*boom*
*boom*
*boom*
Scvs drop like flies. A science facility explodes in a pillar of flame. And engineering bay goe up in smoke. A starport lifts off and flees in terror. A command center attemps the same, but is blowed to smithereens. Supply depots are shredded.
w00p.
I lose a few errant hydras to the seige tanks on his choke. Then his attack squadron returns to try and kill me. i lure his marines toward my burrowed hydras with overlord.
(actually that just sort of happened....i meant to do it...really;)
The net result is I remove his 8 marines with my 12 hydras without having to worry about tank support. i then remove his tanks with my hydras with minimal casualties. i burrow my hydras and morph one in to a lurker.
During all this i've built another evo chamber, more hydras, a spire, and i've rebuilt the hatch at my expansion (remeber those burrowed drones?)
I bust out with 3 muties, and send 'em to scout all the xpansions. I also begin ferrying hydras over to his former base.
And what is this? Do mine eyes decieve me? My burrowed lings at the 9:00 xpansion see a building CC and a crowd of SCVs. All the ones that made it out alive.
I unburrow my lings and kill the scv building the CC. i know better than to take on 8 SCVs with 2 lings. I send in my muties to kill the scvs. They run very, very satisfiyly back up to his choke point, where he has his buildings clustered. I have yet to remove them as there is seige tank and missile turret support, and I would like to get a few more hydras before attempting it.
I begin expanding to my natural and to the top right start. I build another hatch at my main I know this game is over.
When I see a CC flying down towards his former base, i let it land, and then move my lurka in for the kill.
w00p.
Lessons and other important stuff:
1.) Make sure your opponent remains clueless as to where your expansions are. That gave me a huge economic edge.
2.) "lurka" is a wonderful word
3.) Mo' drones. I had my main minded out by the time i dropped him. He didn't.
4.) It's all about timing. Especially vs. the slow terrans. Hit them while they've got their pants down, while' they're enroute to an attack. they have to debate turning around or not, and they'll still have to command 2 battles at once.
5.) Burrow is the bomb, especially when rebuilding expansions.
6.) supply. supply. supply. I found my self waiting for overlords to build in many a case. i should be shot
7.) Mo' hatcheries. Mo' hydras. Mo' everything.
Good game Nightstalker, and I hope to play you again
I apologize for the rather strange voice i wrote this in. I'm tired.
And i have no pix, but here are the resource stats:
Fractal_Wave: Gas Mined=4304/Minerals Mined=14760/Spent=18263
NIGHTSTALKER.: Gas Mined=2792/Minerals Mined=7378/Spent=9469
All the best,
