This may or may not be taken down - I'm not really sure if it will, nor am I too concerned about it. I'm not even too sure why I'm posting it here, except for kicks. Take what you will from it. And yes, 17-18 K of text is a LONG read. There are at least 2000 words here; probably more like 2750. I do hope you enjoy it.
09/28/02...
The mushrooms were devoured around 2100 or so, and then the degenerate drug users that I ate them with decided to take the bong out to the 'woods' by Totem to smoke of le pot. This excursion took about 15 minutes...by which point I was maybe kinda starting to feel a little strange? I wasn't sure then and I'm not sure now. I had my drug head fairly firmly on, so in addition to having 1/16th of an ounce of psychedelic mushrooms inside me, I was acting silly to boot.
After the bong had been restored to Pat's room, we set out for the Botanical Gardens, which was a walk of about 10-15 minutes.
On the way, I found a strange and disturbing sight to anyone on psychedelics - two used rubber gloves, adhesive tape, and a half-full powerade bottle, all in a little pile on the ground. Needless to say, either someone litters, or someone was having ~very~ kinky sex on the lawn outside of Dene.
We walked on down the road, and as anyone can tell you, walking is very good for absorbation of drugs. By the time we got to the Gardens, we were grinning like idiots, and laughing at ourselves for doing so. Words would spark connections to strange and weird things, which we would notice, and then laugh at. Damn drug using hippies.
We casually jumped the fence into the Gardens, and I was immediately drawn to explore the pagoda-like structure up the path. We wandered up, and I was struck by how much things looked like Myst, or Riven, or some other surrealistic computer game. By this time, things were dark, and our eyes were rapidly adjusting. Most things were rendered in shades of black, green and grey, with flashes of orange here and there from the streelights. I recall walking up to this building, looking in it, and saying 'What kind of creatures would build something like this?' I was very much beginning an introspective, back-to-nature trip for the night...not that this was a Bad Thing.
As we left the pagoda, I remember being hit very hard by the nightime playground aspect of it all - there was the HUGE world for me to apperciate and explore, in ways that I couldn't normally do. I felt like we were able to see the beauty and wonder in things that we normally took for granted.
The next step was me wandering into an ornamental, circular garden. I had been in one much like this back when I was tripping in Sidney (ah, my lost youth), and I just knew I could get totally lost in this one if I was given the chance. Luckily, after an argument about a sunflower being an artichoke, we left out the other side, through a bridge that was just covered in plants...I was waiting for someone to be scared of the plants that were hanging all around us...they're MAN EATING, DAMMIT, GET IT OFFA ME, AIIIGH. Lucky for us, nothing of the sort happened.
Post-bridge, the pathway that Pat was taking us along had wire fences on each side...with vines growing on them that had been shaped into letter...spelling out UBC apparently. This is the sort of thing that really, really gets you when you're high, because you're not sure if it was done on purpose, or if you're just imagining it.
We ended up back where we had jumped the fence, except this time we went down the path instead of up, and what looked like a solid wall of blackness was actually a sharp left-hand turn into a well-lit large culvert under the roar to the other side of the Gardens. I cannot stress enough how awe-inspiring it was to turn a corner into this bright, white, incandescent light.
By this time, we were all fairly high - we would stop and touch plants, just to be sure that they were real and solid. There wasn't much talking...more of a sense of wonder at being in this crazy paen to mamma nature.
Going through the culvert was a trip and a half. Suddenly, things were bright bright bright BRIGHT, to say nothing of the echo involved and the pattern the indents on the culvert made.
We made it out to the other side of the Gardens, and went left into the woods. And when I say woods, I mean ~woods~. Huge, huge trees and bushes of all sorts, with these wending, meandering paths of woodchips between them. Obviously, we went in. The chronology of the next section is rather inexact, so I'm not going to hit all the details in specific order, merely mention the bits I recall.
-- The overall feel of the place was vast, green, and slightly oriental. I kept seeing dragon-shapes in the plants and flowers, but when I would reach out to touch them, they would turn to ice, or glass, and be harmless and beautiful. The plants were amazing. No real streetlights could get in, so things were very dark, deep and green.
-- I recall seeing a bush at the center of an intersection, and walking straight up to in and burying my head in the leaves. The ~woosh~ sensation, of moving in and out, was very, very strong.
-- The rest of the gang stopped to smoke some pot, and I sat down on a bench whilst they did so, not knowing that two unreal events were about to take place:
The first was me seeing tracers, for the first time ever, and I was very impressed. They're like some sort of visual reverb on fast movements and bright lights, and they were far cooler that I had anticipated. Mostly, I suppose, I was thinking that, jesus god, I've gone very, very high up in very little time. The rate of accelleration on this trip was gigantic, to say the least.
The other unreal thing was the first in a series of shockingly strong body highs. Imagine being connected to this massive pipe of natural electric current that's flowing out of the ground - and the longer you stay still, the stronger it becomes. This ~hit~ me, while I was on that bench, with and intensity I've not felt since some of my ecstasy trips, two years ago, and it's worth noting that when you stand up and begin moving, it all goes away.
-- Pat, being the perverse fucker that he is, brought his mp3 player along with him, and when we stopped in a clearing to look at the patterns in the wet grass, he put it on...to listen to the Doors, which was good, but to L.A. Woman, which was not. The sheer inappropriateness of it all just made me laugh - it was like the music was not, could not be real, because no one would DARE play something like that at a time like this.
-- By this point, Brianna was convinced that the whold world was animated.
-- We stopped to sit for a bit in that same clearing, and that same unreal body high came back, even stronger because I was lying down, and the voltage got so goddamn strong that I'm amazed I ever managed to get up. It was like having sex with the world, and the fact that she's way, way, way bigger than you doesn't even enter it. She is totally willing to pour as much power into you as you want, even if you can't take it, but want it anyways. The act of simply flexing my fingers took a distinct mental effort, and breathing became almost difficult at times. It was like lying in an orgasm pool, for lack of a better term, except the feeling was at least as zen and...i hesitate to use words like 'mystical' and 'spirutual', because I'll sound like a fucking hippie, but they're really the only ones that fit the bill. So. The feeling from this was at least, if not more zen and mystical and spiritual than it was physical. It was utterly mindblowing - the sort of thing that makes you realize how people used this sort of substance to communicate with the spirit world and such. This shockingly strong body high feeling would be part of most of the wander through the Gardens, and would show up whenever we stopped moving.
-- At one point, both me and pat were looking at this gigantic stump, appriciate the concentric, galaxy-esq circles...when we both noticed that there were ~lots~ of little black bugs crawling on it, and we both thought were were hallucinating them, until Pat metioned it out loud.
-- All the visuals and distortion of reality was on the edge of my vision, except for overt tracers. Things would blur, shift, and then you'd look at them and they'd snap back to normal.
-- We tried playing hacky-sack in the dark, to total, abysmal failure.
-- I discovered another quasi-hidden path, under a plant archway, and on to a smaller path...the sense of discovery and newness of it all was very distinct. Where are we going? What's at the end of this strange wander?
-- On the other side of the entrance, some way in, was a building with a light...we wandered up to it for a bit, before everyone else decided that the light was tooo bright. I was busy trying to see it as both a particle and a wave.
-- We found a bench and sat for a bit, and that crazy body high came back. The path was wet from the rain, and as I sat my feet were flying around on the wet concrete like ice. When we finally managed to get up, I was afraid that Antonio would sit where he was forever, as he looked fairly rooted.
By this time, we decided to go back to the main campus. I mentioned that I wanted to explore the other side of the Gardens a little more, which was one of the smartest things I've ever said, for two reasons.
Reason one was that we had to go back through the culvert-tunnel thing...only the lights had been turned off. Holy wow, i have ~never~ felt anything like that. Totall sensory deprivation, except for the echos of other people's footfalls, and the slightly less-dark end of the tunnel. It was like walking through God's personal wind tunnel. I lost all sense of movement - instead, the end of the tunnel was rushing to meet ME, and I had to decellerate fairly fast to avoid running into it, even through there was a good 10 feet of space between the tunnel exit and the wall on the other side of the path.
We walked up by almost the same path, going overland for a bit, to come out on a hill, with the wind blowing into our faces, and the clouds just streaming across the sky. Astonishing. The whole concept of ~wind~ just blew my mind. We ended up walking across this hill for some ways, before stopping near the end of the Gardens to rest for a bit. Around this point, Rob called Pat's cell, and Pat managed to answer with 'Tank, I need an exit!', much to his pride.
I, however, wasn't listening.
I had, again, gone off into my own little world. I did that a lot this trip, I suppose because I didn't really know 3 of the people who were with us, so I didn't really talk too much. Who knows why? At any rate, by this time I was just lightyears out of it.
Stopping atop the hill had given me another quasi-body rush. Combined with the wind blowing straight at me,and the view of the orange/yellow/red lights on campus, I had somehow thought myself into a god complex. The feeling of having pure ~power~ fed to me from the ground and from the wind was just totally intoxicating. Moving my hands and fingers felt like I was controlling empires - I could crush any of those puny campus structures like a house of cards. Simply breathing made me feel like flying. I cannot adaquately describe the pure feeling of POWER I was dealing with...and hitting a mellow person like myself with an abosolute power trip will always be rather interesting. It was like I could swallow the entire world, and the only question was whether I should or not.
We left the hill, walking back towards the campus.
Rob was supposed to meet us on the way, and I mistook and innocent jogger for him, but no harm was done.
Rob showed up on his skateboard, and gave us all a nice mind fuck by skating into view and then standing perfectly skill on his board and not reacting to any of us. This sort of mind-melting behavior of his would become standard as the trip continued. The funny part was that I knew he was doing it to trip us out, but it still got to me somewhat.
The god complex was still on while we were walking back to Totem so rob could put his skateboard away. I could stop clouds, devour buses and cards whole. Luckily for all involved, this feeling faded fairly quickly.
We continued along our merry way, in a much less deep trip, at least for me. I asked pat How He Felt, and he couldn't answer...and the he asked me What Was on My Mind, and I couldn't answer. I also debated sematics with Rob about whether we were high, stoned, twisted, or what? We eventually settled on 'tripped', and then we turned up into the campus proper to avoid having to deal with normal people.
While going up towards the centre of the campus, I had to tie my shoe about 54656 times, but I also said that "A good dj gives the crowd's desires back to them.", which is not a new concept, but certainly a nice summation.
Then, Rob ran into his friend Jess, who talked with us for a bit. Pat, Antonio and Clayton didn't want to deal with a normal person, or just wanted to play with the hacky sack more, now that we had good light. I confess, my conversation was not amazing, but I think I held my own. Rob, bless his heart, did most of the talking, and eventually Jess wandered off.
We continued around campus - past the upside-down tree, which was quite entertaining, and had some very, very red flowers by it, and then past the library to a bench. All sorts of interesting things would happen by this bench. Everyone else was smoking of the reefer, but I was feeling frisky.
First, I ordered Rob, in his capacity as an entertainer to turn backflips. He tried to distract me, by flicking his lighter on and off, and changing the emphasis on the word and he almost succeded. Finally, he confessed that he couldn't turn back handsprings, and I said I would settle for a kartwheel or round-off. Rob said he didn't know what a round-off was, so I proceeded to ~try~ to demonstrate, and hit the worse roundoff of my entire life. Rob still couldn't do one. Some entertainment.
Then, ahh, then, the truly horrific shit went down.
This bunch of normal people who were hanging around the echo circle, decided to wander over and talk to us...obviously, because we're that fucking cool. Alas, we're also that ripped on mushrooms. Oh, the irony. So these people, who it turned out were in Grade 12 at the local high school, come over and start talking to us. Rob is doing his best to field and entire conversation at once, I'm trying as hard as I can, but staying focused is not something that mushroom people do well. Brianna just looks stunned, and Pat/Antonio/Clayton are still sitting and dealing with their joint.
And, to make matters worse, one of them looks like a fucking new-age pirate. Bandana, leather jacket, smoking a cigar, short pants, the works. I was tempted to ask him where Smee and Cap'n Hook were. And I swear, I am not making this up.
Finally, we drive them off, with me making comments about pot-smoking communist agents, and 'beware the red menace!' Obviously, I've been reading too much literature from the 70s and 80s, back when there ~was~ a red menace. At any rate, they left. Poor, innocent children.
We moved on.
Various bits of modern art proved very interesting. A sculpted head at the end of a long corridor of pillars was very fun, and I used pat's fisheye lens to prove to myself that while high, perception ~IS~ reality. A large metal piece of 'modern art' was also tres neat.
After that, we went back to Totem to watch movies - Rob was going to feed us pizza pops and show Rodney Mullen skate videos. However, while they were playing random videos, 'Do the Evolution', by Pearl Jam, came on, and I just couldn't take it, so I went into Pat's Room and put on an old Sasha set. Ooooops.
If steve had not come to tell me that the pizza pops were ready, I never would have moved from Pat's bed. Again, this is another gigantic drug cliche, but the music made me high again, in a trippy, dubby, progressive house kinda way. Sasha knows what he is doing.
They got me away from the Sasha for the pizza pops, but then I went back. The pizza pops, however, were much more cunning than I had anticipated. It took all of my mental efforts to devour them without getting covered in delicious 3-cheese sauce, and tasty bits of pepperoni and ham. However, I managed somehow. Then, I went to wash my hands, and discovered that Rob had moved to Rodney Mullen skateboard videos.
Holy shit, but that man can skate. If you, like me, thought that Tony Hawk was the King and God of skateboarding, you've got a bit of a shock coming, because Rodney Mullen is just on another plane of existence. No words I have can adaquatley describe how good he is, because I am not a skater. Just go and find some videos of the man, get some popcorn, and prepare to be amazed.
Now, by the time this was all over, I was fairly straight. Eating food had brought me down a fair bit, and it was at least 0115 or so. Naturally, they all went out to smoke a joint. I kept listening to Sasha. Then, when they got back, we decided to watch Labyrinth.
Labyrinth did two things for me. It made me realize that David Bowie is deeply talented, ambisexual, and a complete fucking nutcase. And it reminded me of how hot Jennifer Conally is. Hooray for green eyes.
Steve had ordered pizza, so I devoured two slices of beef and (ugh) mushroom pizza, pat and co went out to smoke the roach, and then we went to bed, to some weird-ass dreams that I don't recall.
In closing, I'd like to thank the acadamy.
All the best,
Fractal_Wave
