A bit of a note before i begin. This is my first contribution to this site reportwise (i have sent in a few replays) it has no embelishment. Sorry folks i hope to read all the guides and get much better at this soon. Anyhow i hope you enjoy this piece of writing.

High ridgeline loomed closer on the left and right side. The ground on my left appeared strangely disturbed, like giant anthills around two metres wide and half as high. This immediately struck me as strange. There wasn’t any life on this god-forsaken rock, apart from the mining colonies and several thousand kinds of bathroom scum. Terrans had come here just nine months ago when this planet was found to have enough resources to be worthwhile. That was why we were out in this desolate and ravaged wasteland. Looking for more resources.

I called a halt. I wanted to take a look at the anthill like mounds, and the men looked like they needed a rest. Everywhere the team sprawled out and sat down or propped themselves up against something. Most opened their visors to breathe some unfiltered air, although it was barely breathable. Smoke came billowing out of the firebat power suit to my right. I don’t know how he could stand smoking in a sealed power suit. The smoke became a halo around his head. The thick atmosphere and heavy air kept it from rising or dissipating.

Dismissing thoughts of my team I turned back to the strange mounds. I began to stroll over when I was called by my Second in Command. He was a tall thin man with seemingly dark features. He had one of the new ghost power suits equipped with the lockdown canisters, high tech stuff. I knew why he had called me, he wanted to complain about stopping for such a useless purpose again.

The science boys back at the base would be ecstatic if I could find them something to ponder over, investigating possibilities of life was a secondary order. I turned to face his rapidly growing figure, I knew he was aware of why we had stopped. He was a ghost. They were all telepaths. He liked to bother me for his own amusement. We had been friends for about 6 months now. He didn’t even get to speak his first word when the ground trembled.

This struck me as extremely odd because this planet so far hadn’t had any sort of earthquake activity. My friend felt it also.
“What do you think that was?” I asked.
“Don’t know sir”. He answered.
The tremor came again. This time more prominent. Now the whole unit was on its feet and looking around with nervous glances.

Then the ground really began to shake, rumbling with a throaty roar the anthills grew larger. My friend next to me had his gaze fixed firmly on the steadily rising piles of dirt. The mounds suddenly flew open with a huge spray of dirt and rock, revealing four of the strangest looking creatures I had ever seen.

They stood around three and a half metres tall with an almost snakelike body. They didn’t look friendly ether. Their hanging jaws dripped a vile grey liquid; their heads had an armour plate covering the back of their necks, like a triceratops from ancient times. My eyes were drawn to their arms covered in a scaly carapace like that, which covered most of their body. Their hands were well, not hands they were sharp scythe like blades that ran up to what might be an elbow joint. No fingers. Their torso had more of the rubbery like carapace. The side of their hands and neck had what appeared to be sacks attached to them. I began to wonder what they were for when I met eyes with one of them. That moment has haunted me for the rest of my life. Those eyes. Orange with red streaks and black pupils.

Nobody moved, both sides sat in a deathly silence. Then as if from an unknown cue the strange creatures gave out an ear splitting screech and reared back like a snake going to strike. I then learned what the sacks were for. As one the creatures seemingly tensed the sacks blowing then up. It was terrifying. Row upon row thousand upon thousand of tiny jagged spines all glinted in the afternoon sun. With a soul-shattering cry they unleashed their terrifying spines, seemingly spitting them.

My mind finally reacted. My stimpack activated. Moving became surprisingly fluent despite everything around me going into slow motion. That’s what a stimpack does to you, it amplifies your adrenaline flow by about 400%. Sure that much adrenaline so quickly cant be good for you, and there have been cases where Marines have been knocked out or killed by an overly large dose. But it does increase all of your senses and reaction/movement for about 20 seconds. Acceptable by Confederate standards. My legs sprang into action and the deadly spines missed me by bare inches. The marine who had come up on my left wasn’t so lucky. The spines fired at me, hit him, walking death across his chest. He fell twitching. I choked back anger in my throat and like lightning raised my gauss rifle. The vile creature once again noticed me. I fired. So did it. Hundreds of rounds left my rifle in the time it took for the spines to reach me. The pain was incredible, the vicious spines hit my left leg tearing through the armour. It was like someone had run hot barbed wire through my leg hundreds of times. I fell to one knee.

The creature was in no better shape, it was missing most of its right arm and the sacks on the same side. I raised my rifle once again. I could amazingly see the spines regrowing in its remaining sacks. I pulled the trigger. The rounds impacted squarely on the creature’s chest, tearing it open. Practically splitting the creature in two.

The effort took its toll on me. I fell to the ground. All around me I could hear the screams and tortured roars of men and creatures alike. I felt the stim effect wearing off. I looked to the left and saw horrors like I never imagined. Men and creatures lay strewn everywhere. Many more than we originally encountered.

Then out of nowhere a huge reverberating blast sounded. I turned my head to see a tank surrounded by Marines. Its powerful Arcetile Cannon glowing with red warmth. The gunfire stoped abruptly. My friend’s personal cloaking field shimmered and faded and he appeared in front of me.
"The creatures have pulled back for now i think". He said.
A woman in a white combat suit came up behind him.
"He's in pretty bad shape lets get him to the field post"
Relief flooded through me and fatigue hit me like a hammer, my conscience wavered and I passed into darkness.
