Introduction
I sat quietly, my chin
resting on my hands as I watched the monitors in front of me. On the display was
a map of The Lost Temple, now found by our expeditionary unit. The monitor to my
left showed our new expansion efforts, commanded by TheWangGrip.
To my right was the Nexus of a shady faction of Protoss, led by an executor only
known as the DarkProphet.
TheWangGrip was a new commander under my command. I
didn't know much about him,
or what his name meant. I prefered to ignore the images that came to my mind.
Wang was reputed for his control of vehicle units, and his disregard for
anything else. His Command Center had landed on the eastern plateau overlooking
the Temple, and a Protoss nexus warped in at the northern plateau. His scouting
SCV was attacked by a hostile probe at the northern plateau, where Wang caught a
glimpse of a pylon and the warp field of a gateway. Quickly, Wang began the
construction of a Barracks, and then a Refinery.
As for information about the Protoss executor, I knew little. Recent reports had
led me to believe that she was also new on the battlefield, and that her battle
strategy was erratic and unpredictable.
My thoughts were interrupted by Don Cherrings, Head of Tactical Intelligence.
"Should we send Wang our battleground information? It doesn't look like the
Protoss are very hospitable."
"No, Don. I want Wang to prove his worth. If he can't win against a fresh
executor, then I don't want him on my team."
Early Game
Wang continued his scouting procedures without paying attention to the trailing
probe, scouting the southern and then the western expansion and finding nothing.
At the ramp leading to his base, he had constructed a simple wall, consisting of
a barracks and two supply depots. A scouting probe tried to gain access to
Wang's base, but a marine scared it away.
"Is that marine holding a beer?"
I frowned softly.
"Subtract five points from his score for giving his troops access to alchoholic
beverages."
I glanced at the Protoss base. A cybernetics core and a forge. Already, the
executor was enforcing her unorthodox reputation. A zealot and a dragoon made
their way down the ramp and made their way to Wang's base. Wang had three
marines, and had just started a factory.
The
casualties meter clicked as it rose by one, and another screen turned on,
revealing the death. My advisors leaned towards the screen.
"Looks like Wang's SCV micromanagement is lacking."
"Patch me in on their communications frequencies. I
want to hear what
they're saying."
*crrk* Oh my god! They're attacking the beer depot!
Raising an eyebrow, I glanced at Wang's ramp, now under attack by the zealot and
dragoon. Wang's machine shop was only half done.
*crrk* I want FIVE SCVs down at the beer depot! Move it, or I'll
have it all confiscated!
*crrk* Yes sir! Right away sir!
Five SCVs ran down to the supply depot and began repairing it, while the three
marines engaged the protoss attackers. One of the marines aimed arwy, and a few
windows on the depot shattered. I think I saw his comrade slap him.
Spikes rained on the shields of the protoss units, and the zealot went down
before it could do any damage. The dragoon climbed halfway up the ramp and began
attacking the marines, sending two of the soldiers to hell before it retreated.
I have no doubt that besides being poorly trained, Wang's marines were also
intoxicated. Beer bottles and cans hit the dragoon's legs at it ran, with the
SCV's hollers filling the air.
*crrk* Okay, I want tanks with seige mode, and two more marines.
Wallace, I want the beer in the depot brought to my quarters. We can't afford
losing it to a bunch of ramshackle protoss.
DarkProphet had constructed a second gateway during the attack, and was now
producing ranged dragoons. Her ramp was secured by a pylon and a cannon.
"Is she going for reavers?"
"I think so. If Wang doesn't catch the robotics bay, then he's going to be in
trouble."
"If he doesn't catch the protoss' western expansion, he's going to be in
trouble."
I glanced at the 9:00 main. The probe that had killed the SCV had started a
nexus.
A white dot was floating slowly over the Protoss base. Wang
had floated an engineering bay to scout out the Protoss' base. Four dragoons
attacked the building, but Wang caught a glimpse of the robotics bay just before
the building exploded.
"I hope that EBay wasn't manned, Wang."
*crrk* Manned? ... Oh, shit.
I took another five points off his score.
The four dragoons that had killed the ebay now waltzed their way to attack Wang,
but he had set up two tanks and a tower on his ledge, and the protoss units
retreated back to their base, losing one of their number. The Prophet also
started a defensive cannon at the ramp of the 9:00 plateau.
"As expected, Wang goes for Heavy Metal."
I nodded. Wang already had two factories producing tanks , and was
floating a new Command Center over to the minerals below his plateau. I glanced
at the protoss base. A shuttle had already been constructed, and no doubt a
reaver was already on the way. Two dragoons were transported to the ledge
overlooking her natural expansion to defend against the popular turbo newbie
strategy.
A second ebay is constructed at the Terran main, and in a curious
move, 4/5 of the SCVs in his main base are maynarded to his new expansion.
"What is he doing?"
'Something stupid."
His seemingly stupid maynard of most of his SCV population,
however, had saved
him a lot of losses. DarkProphet had picked up her newly constructed reaver, and
a dragoon from her natural's ledge, and begun an assault on the Terran's mineral
line. Her shuttle made it just in time, reaching the landing point just seconds
before Wang's two towers came online and felled the shuttle.
The reaver managed to take out most of the mineral line and the two towers while
the dragoon tried its best to do something. Two tanks seiged up within range of
the reaver, and the dragoon rushed forward to act as bait. Though the
diversionary tactic worked, the Reaver did not manage to get past the SCVs
gathering gas, and exploded under the fire from the two arclite seige cannons.
"Casualties.. nine SCVs and two towers.."
"Against a shuttle, a reaver and a dragoon"
"Don't forget to account for lost mining time."
I sighed,
"All of you shut up. I need to focus."
My advisors promptly went quiet.
Wang had not let this attack deter him, promptly building another factory and
spending a few credits on new SCVs. Too few credits, though. The mineral patches
outnumbered his SCVs. Two turrets were constructed over the remains of the razed
ones. His expansion was fully online; both bases had three SCVs delivering gas
from the refinery.
The protoss forge animated as it began researching (no doubt) new weapons for
the protoss army. Five dragoons were brought to the bottom of the ramp just as
Wang seiges the two tanks that killed the reaver on the ledge overlooking the
protoss' base.
"Two comsat stations.. good choice." Don said softly, approving Wang's
next move. Don
believed that every comsat center was worth five times its cost. Don also
believed that the moon was made of cheese.
"You, rookie. What do you see?" I looked at the young man beside me. He must
have just finished studying in the academy, and his hair was a mess.
"Uh.. I see that Wang's constantly producing tanks, while the Protoss executor
is having trouble macroing.. But Wang's economy is much weaker than the
Protoss'. She has two nexii and one warping in on the southern platea.. oh, she
just cancelled it."
Wang had comsatted the new expansion, and Prophet had waited for a few seconds
to let the scan die off before cancelling the warp and hiding her probe inside
the mineral patches.
"Anything else, rookie?"
"Uhm.. well.. surprisingly, the Protoss and Terran unit counts are almost
exactly alike. Wang is at 59/60, and Prophet is at 60/60.. And since Prophet has
a lot more probes than Wang has SCVs, then Wang must have the stronger army."
I glanced at the protoss base. Dragoons were queued up inside the gateways, and
a reaver had just beeped online. An observatory had also began to warp in.
Despite Wang's stronger military, If
he tried attacking now, Prophet could use her shuttle to drop on top of the
tanks - Not a good situation for a tank-only commander.
"Hmm.. DarkProphet isn't too shabby. She's put a dragoon to keep an eye on the
northwestern island.. and, oh! are those observers?"
I could practically see Don drooling. I sighed. Well, at least Don knew what he
was talking about. Nothing's worse than a recon specialist who doesn't
specialize in recon.
I watched as eight tanks and three vultures began driving south towards the
empty expansion. His intelligence reports had not been updated, and he still
believes the expansion is warping in. Prophet's intelligence force is much
stronger, with new observers and a dragoon on both islands to warn her of
expansion attempts. A third command center begins construction
on the western side of his plateau just before an observer manuevers around the
two turrets beside his tanks overlooking the 12:00 ramp. I frown. Prophet now
has information on his production capability and his army status.
"Look! that shuttle just walked right into his base!"
"Walked? You mean flew."
"Shut up."
"Well, Wang's lucky he didn't build any extra SCVs, 'cause they'd be all dead
now."
"Lucky? He's an imbecile!"
I ignored their pointless blabbering and watched as the reaver exploded,
its scarabs already decimated what small work force the terran commander
controlled in his main. The
dragoon in the shuttle had been dropped off in the corner of Wang's base and
went unnoticed, managing to destroy a supply depot before three tanks drown the
grass in its blood.
Wang's army, now supplemented with four more vultures, rumbles towards the nine
o'clock expansion, where Prophet's base was flourishing. Don began praising the
Protoss executor after seeing Prophet's extensive observer coverage. She had watched
the tanks from the moment they reached the southern choke to when they seiged up
outside the western plateau. The only thing she missed was the extensive spider
mine network set up on the southern plateau. Wang seiged up his tanks, and one
scan later the cannon guarding the ramp was destroyed.
My military advisor whistled appreciatively as Protoss' dragoons reached the
tanks the moment they began unseiging - thus, sparing them from being raped by
the arclite cannons of the tanks. Both commanders focus-fired, but the protoss
units were victorious, their numbers and weapons upgrade winning them the
battle.
"I bet if Wang danced his tanks he would have won."
"If Wang danced his tanks, his tanks would have spent more time running around
each other than fighting. What he should have done is brought his
vultures to assist, and seige a few of the back tanks."
"Look, Prophet is on the offensive again with her reavers."
The screen zoomed up on the 3:00 mineral line, where a reaver had been dropped
in the midst of the SCVs. The whole mining force at the 3:00 natural was
murdered by the violent bomb-wielding slug before it flew away.
Mid Game
Turrets are erected to protect against another such reaver drop, and both active
command centers begin producing SCVs. The protoss executor begins mass-producing
dragoons out of three gateways, and also starts a fleet of shuttles. My advisors
come to the conclusion that Prophet is going for a mass-drop approach.
Wang's newly completed Command Center is floated to the mineral-only expansion,
and a squadron of tanks seige between the temple walls and the side of his
plateau to defend it. As soon as her observer sees the new expansion, Prophet
sends her contro group of dragoons to kill it. Five dragoons die before she
pulls her forces away. Just seconds after, Prophet launches another assault on
Wang's natural, and once again all of his workers die, forcing him to train
more.
"Why doesn't he take an island expansion?"
"Well, it's harder to defend, and he doesn't have a starport yet to transport
units to."
"Rookie, what do you think?"
"I think... that he wants this expansion because it limits protoss movement out
of their main base." He said, examining the screen, "If Wang can grab this
expansion, then he has a bit more map control. That, and he can start a very
strong tank push from that expansion."
I nod, "Personally, I think he was just being stupid. But those are very good
points you three brought up."
I grin, satisfied at their blank stares, my eyes watching as a shuttle drops a
dragoon by four of the tanks. It lands safely; none of the tanks can fire back
because of its proximity. The reaver in the shuttle, however, draws fire, and
the dragoon and reaver are sent into the red almost instantly. The giant slug
fires a scarab at the tanks, but it fails to deal fatal damage to more than one
of the tanks. A second shuttle flies in quickly, and drops another reaver beside
the tanks. A scarab is fired, and destroys three tanks simultaneously before it
is lifted off and flown to safety.
"Wang's in trouble. If Prophet can get enough shuttles, then she can foil his
pushes."
"Not if he's got goliath support. Look, he's got one chasing the shuttles
already."
Vultures zoom past the command center and begin laying mines in a rough
semicircle around the terran encampment, but Prophet is watching with her
observer. To combat the tanks, she begins producing zealots to supplement her
goon force.
With the eight dragoons in her base, Prophet begins another assault on the new
terran encampment, clearing the newly laid mines with the help of an observer.
The vultures and goliath are destroyed without any casualties, and without
further ado the dragoons begin an assault on the command center, out of range of
the seige tanks.
*crrk* asdf! Kill the dragoons!
*crrk* They're out of range, sah! We can't hit them!
*crrk* Well, TRY at least!
Boom! One of the tanks fired at a dragoon, and suddenly the whole army of
protoss warriors stepped forwards, drawn by the attacking tanks.
"Yes! Wang's got her now!"
"Not so fast. She's using this as an opportunity to get her warriors close to
our tanks"
"This is going to be a close one.."
The dragoons and tanks duke it out for half a minute, both sides suffering heavy
losses, but when the last tank is destroyed, three dragoons still remain.
*crrk* Lift off! Hurry up! Tanks, get down their and cream them
"Three hundred... Two seventy-five.. Two fifty.." Rookie was counting down the
hitpoints on the command center as the remaining dragoons pumelled it with their
phase disrupters.
"Two hundred."
At 200 hp, the Command Center disappears over the cliff, and three seige tanks
dig into the earth, readying their giant cannons to attack. The Protoss units
retreat, rather than face more casualties.
Both commanders immediately start aircraft facilities after the small skirmish,
two stargates warping in from Aiur and a single Starport beginning construction.
An SCV is sent to repair the command center.
"I'm trying, but I can't figure out who's going to win. DarkProphet has the
superior economy, but she's producing units out of only four gateways.. So Wang
equals her production with his five factories. If Wang can grab this expansion,
he can probably win the game, unless Prophet builds more production buildings."
"But Prophet's still pumping out observers! She knows exactly what Wang's doing
exactly when he's doing it. Wang's recon is so awful that.."
I let Don's voice fade into the background, instead checking the upgrades
researched by the two sides. Protoss Armor and Attack are at level 2, while
Shield is at 1. Terran vehicle armor and weapons are at level 2. A quick check
on his dual armories confirms that 3-3 is in the makings.
"Um.. what is Wang doing?"
All of the mining SCVs at his natural expansion are sent over to the new
mineral-only base as the fully-healed Command Center lands.
"If Wang wins this one, I'm sending him straight to training. Such a poor
economy is not acceptable."
"And if he doesn't win...?"
I stayed quiet and let my advisors' brains work it out.
The casualties meter begins rising again as Prophet sends another attack force
against Wang. Eight dragoons and a zealot race towards the much fought-over
expansion, half of them crumpling to the ground before the other four dragoons
destroy the remaining tanks. But the victory is false, as vultures and tanks
roll out and squish the spiders.
"What are those zealots doing?"
Two zealots rushed into the 3:00 mineral line.
"I was watching them. They were praying to God to make their deaths short and
painless."
"Not very honorable of them, is it?"
"I thought it was rather smart."
"Wait.. do they even have a God?"
"Casualties.. 8 dragoons, 3 zealots for... five tanks."
"Five? I counted four"
"One of the zealots got through, and the tank it was attacking was killed by
friendly fire."
"Shit. stubbed my toe."
I sighed. Sometimes advisors are such loud mouths.
A fifth gateway is warped by the others at the protoss main, and she tries
another offensive on the Terran tanks, dropping a lone reaver in the midst of
the tanks as they unseige. Fortunately for Wang, only one tank goes down to the
scarabs before the reaver is disabled.
Seeking to expand, Prophet's situation only grows worse, and a spider mine
catches a glimpse of her assimilator warping in, prompting Wang to attack it
with his 7 vultures. The nexus is promptly destroyed, and Prophet is forced to
cope with the loss of her army and her new expansion.
Once again, an attack is prepared, consisting of a good amount of dragoons, zealots,
and 4 corsairs with dweb. Their target: Wang's new base. His new expansion is
now
practically a fortress of tanks and turrets.
Four corsairs light up the battlefield
with dweb, targetting the tanks in front while her troops followed. Prophet had caught Wang with his pants down;
his tanks had begun unseigeing the moment dweb covered the sky. Wang was forced to reseige his tanks before he could defend against the
protoss force, but the 7 vultures
at the southern plateau race northwards and buy the tanks valuable time as they
stall the dragoons, sacrificing their lives for the greater good. Slowly, it
becomes apparent that Wang is the victor of this battle, and in a final
desperate attempt, Prophet orders all her units to focus fire on the Command
Center, bringing it to 88 hp before the last Dragoon falters and dies.
"That's some good work on Wang's part."
"Or bad work on Prophet's. Her zealots spent vital
seconds unable to attack the tanks underneath the dweb, while getting pummeled
by the tanks in the back. If the executor had dwebbed the back tanks... things
might've gone differently."
"I'm just happy that we suffered so few losses. Wang may not be the best, but
his troops are well-trained."
*crrk* All the SCVs at the mineral only, I want you repairing the
command center. No, you may not have a raise! Every tank unseige. I want you to
push into the protoss main and eliminate that bas- What do you mean bathroom
break! We're fighting a war here!
Ten tanks advance from the terran main, five of them seiging up by the ramp, the
other circling around to hit the ramp at a different angle. Dragoons begin
pouring out of the base, but the tanks obliterate the warriors without any
difficulty. Sloppy dweb placement doesn't help Prophet much either. Without much delay, the terran units begin climbing the ramp. The
two stargates light up.
"Carriers." One of my assistant says.
I nod. Prophet is getting desperate.
Wang sets up a small mine field at the top of the ramp, and seiges a few tanks
there. But this containment force doesn't last long. Zealots race out of the
gateways, shouting war cries. A few make it to the tank, and attract spider
mines and arclite cannon fire, destroying the forces on top of the ramp. In the
meantime, goliaths and a tank raze the mining expansion to the east of her
plateau, and the Protoss executor is left with no income. Her 9:00 base is mined
out, and, though she has started a new expansion at the southern main, no probes
are mining. Five shuttles escape from the dying base with one reaver in their
holds, picking up the probes at the 9:00 main and transporting them to the top
left island.
"Look, they're lifting off."
Two carriers emerge from the Stargates, and begin heading west to construct
their interceptors. Goliaths scale the ramp and begin attacking the blimps, but
with 8 interceptors each, and the help of a cannon, the carriers are able to
take down quite a few goliaths, and a couple of tanks. In a bold move, Prophet
brings her carriers to the center of the main to attack the tanks - and pays the
price. One of the golden blimps explodes and falls to the ground in pieces. The
other retreats west with the three remaining corsairs. Now unopposed, the Terran
war machine levels the rest of the protoss base.
"Game over.'
"N.. no.. Can't be.." Don was no doubt wondering how someone could lose with
such a strong recon force.
"She's still fighting, though."
"Always the sign of a good commander. Never give up, never surrender."
"But the battle is done! Wang's producing dropships, and he's starting an
expansion at the southern natural."
"Wait.. screen over to his mineral natural."
The mineral natural, now devoid of tanks, suddenly loses five SCVs in a bright
blue explosion. DarkProphet is still at it, even at the brink of death. Her
shuttle and reaver escape uninjured.
The 6:00 expansion is razed by the force that destroyed Prophet's main with
ease, and a second starport is constructed at his main. DarkProphet begins a
pylon wall at the 3:00 natural, reinforcing the four cannons on top of the ledge
with 2 zealots. Four gateways occupy the Protoss' last land-based expansion, as
well as a very curious pylon on the eastern side of the plateau. With her
reaver, she manages to foil Wang's expansion attempt, forcing him to lift off
from the 6:00 natural while his army is blasting through the pylon wall. Twelve
zealots and a carrier do their best to defend against the tanks and goliaths,
but Wang's forces are too strong, and squash the Protoss warriors.
In only a few minutes, the
Protoss race is extirpated from the mainland of the temple, confined to the
northwestern island, where two gateway and a cybernetics core are powered by a
line of pylons. A shuttle carrying a probe is sent to the bottom right island,
where she begins a new nexus.
End Game
As the terran commander rallies his units in the center of the map, Prophet
begins two covert gateways, the first at the small bit of beach underneath the
western cliff of the 12:00 main, and the second at a pylon that had been missed
by the Terran commander on his assault at 9, since it was built by Prophet at
the eastern edge of the plateau. Both gateways immediately begin producing
dragoons.
"Wang had better get his act up. It's taking way too long for him to kill the
island expansion."
"His recon sucks, so I'm not surprised."
"Shut up, Don."
*crrk* Alright, all SCVs report to the new expansion at the
southern main. I want twelve goliaths into the dropships. Comsat, scan the top
le- yes.. Hm.. I see two dragoons.. Alright, get ready for the attack. You six
tanks, I want you guarding our new base
I watch Don nod, his hand cupping his chin. Just seconds before, nine dragoons
had popped into the shuttles, hiding the protoss army from sight.
At almost the same time, the protoss and terran commanders attack the last
mining bases with their doomdrops, irradicating the armies at both bases and
razing the HQ's. Both factions have a new expansion just coming online as well -
Terran's at the southern natural, and Protoss' at the southeastern island. The
remaining tanks (bar two, which are seiged by the mined-out 3:00 mineral only).
drive south to protect Wang's new base, and seige up, a goliath stationed above
the ledge to sight for the tanks.
"Idiot, she's not going to just waltz her units into his army. Hell, she even
has an observer spying on the tanks."
The shuttles blast eastwards, passing over the goliath and dropping their cargo
on top of the tanks, which immediately begin to unseige. Four dragoons go down
to goliath and tank fire, but in the end, the reaver and a dragoon remain, and
take out the Command Center.
"Wait.. was that the last of Wang's army?"
"No, he's still got eleven goliaths at the northwestern island.. and two tanks
at the 3:00 mineral natural.. But nothing else."
"So basically he's got shit."
"And 1200 in the bank. If he can set up a new base.."
I watched quietly as Wang mounted an attack against the Protoss' last base,
killing all the probes, but losing all his goliaths. The goliaths on the
northwestern island met an untimely death as their dropships passed over an army
of 12 goons. In a final desperate move, he
started two expansions and turbo newb'd Prophet's new nexus at the western
natural, killing the nexus but losing two tanks and four goliaths. Despite his
efforts, Prophet had an
economy and 12+ goons; Wang had nothing. The battle was over.
I turned off the radio,
"Prepare to leave orbit. Wang is finished."

Lessons Learned
1. Macro is GOOD.
Wang's factories, from early to late game, never faltered
their tank production, and his army dominated the mid-late game, until he let it
disperse into smaller units. That's when Prophet could take them out.
2. Watch your economy.
Prophet had such a powerful comeback because her economy was strong throughout
the whole battle. Yes, she should have macro'd more, but she was always stronger
because she could rebuild her armies with ease as soon as they were killed.
3. RECON is POWERFUL.
Prophet knew exactly what Wang was doing at any time, except for a few things.
This was an extremely powerful asset, especially when she was confined to the
island bases.
4. REAVERS
are GODLY.
Yes, yes they are. Coupled with shuttles they can be EXTREMELY cost effective.
5. NEVER GIVE UP.
Many players probably would have given up when they were
confined to that island base. Prophet pushed on and won the game. Likewise, Wang
kept on fighting until the bitter end, starting TWO expansions and going on the
offensive when he saw the opportunity. If Wang had been able to secure one of
the expansions, the game would have gone on for a lot longer.
6. MICRO.
Yes, Micro. Both players did an amazing job (except for the dwebs). Units were always focus-firing, and the vultures rarely died
without laying all their mines. The reason that many of Prophet's reaver drops
were so powerful was because she focus-fired where her scarabs would deal the
most damage. Prophet saw opportunity when Wang had taken her ramp with mines and
tanks, using her zealots as VERY effective 'infested terrans.
7. ALWAYS be on the OFFENSIVE.
As they say, a good offense is a great defense. Prophet never stopped attacking;
from reaver drops to dragoon assaults, she was always dealing damage to Wang's
mineral lines and his armies. Likewise, once Wang's war machine began rumbling,
it never stopped until the whole mainland was cleared of the Protoss presence.
Prophet never got the chance to build a decent-sized army at her 9:00 main
because Wang simply never gave her the time to. In the end game, both players
were thinking of ways to attack. Drops and sneak-attacks are very effective,
especially when the other player isn't expecting it.
