The Starcraft Chronicles: The Hybrid Wars Episode VII
The medics were able to regenerate Kerrigan's wounded body, but she had lost a lot of blood. She lay unconscious with Raynor at her side, standing watch over her. He kept vigil through the night and begged her to open her eyes. He had gone to kill the Queen of Blades and now he had placed Sarah on the brink of death. He did not know what to feel if she had died. She was the cause of so much misery and death, but that was another person. Now she was Sarah and if she died, he could not imagine what he would have done. As Raynor looked after his fallen friend, Zeratul and Artanis kept a close eye on their ally.
"I do not understand Zeratul. Why does Raynor watch over Kerrigan? She was his greatest enemy and now he cares for her as if she were his own flesh and blood."
"Sadly young Artanis, it is a gift and a curse the terrans must endure. They fight among themselves with such hatred, but they can learn to forgive and carry on. It is a quality that we as Protoss, could afford to learn. The Dark Templar and the Protoss must learn to forgive, for the sake of our own existence."
"You are right Zeratul, but can our people learn such a lesson?"
"For our sake, I hope that we can indeed."
The two fleets continued towards Aiur, and left Duran's facility to burn to the ground. They had failed to capture Duran, who had fled to a small outpost far from the facility. He had limited supplies and his plans to invade Aiur would be set in motion before he had intended. His armies were ready, but if he waited any longer, his supplies and resources would grow thin. The time to strike was now, and he would strike hard and fast. The small fleet of ships under his command loaded soldiers and heavy terran artillery. Each ship was packed with hundreds of hybrids and a small band of terran mercenaries. The fleet left the ice world and set a course for Aiur. Duran smiled with anticipation of his conquests, the time was at hand. Soon, his masters would have their revenge against the spoiled children they had sought to nurture and care for.
Duran made his way towards Aiur and had sent a signal to the Zerg Broods at Tarsonis. After Kerrigan's defeat, the Broods now followed Duran and his psi emitters. With the whole Swarm at his disposel, Duran had organized a perfect two-prong attack. His hybrids and terran forces on one end, and the Zerg swarm on the other. The Swarm arose from Tarsonis and made their way into the void of space. This could not have played more perfectly to Mengsk, as the entire planet of Tarsonis was now Zerg free. General Pasley and his fleet, moved into low orbit over the surface. Pasley was not sure as to the nature of the mission, but was not one to question the emperor's motives. He sent a transmission to Mengsk and awaited further instruction.
"Emperor Mengsk, my fleet awaits your command."
"Excellent, I want you to deploy a ground force to retrieve a certain weapon in the Dorma Valley. It is housed in an underground facility and is extremely dangerous. Be advised to handle these weapons with care."
"That is understood my emperor, but what exactly is the nature of the weapons?"
"General, you are about to confiscate the most powerful weapon know to our people. Ten, one thousand missile salvos, of Apocalypse Class Nuclear Missiles. Ten times more powerful than any nuke we have today. They were banned years ago, but the Confederacy kept them just in case. Now, I will use them to eliminate the threat of these creatures. Retrieve the missiles and have them brought back to Korhal."
"I understand emperor, I am deploying my forces now."
The transmission ended and Pasley deployed the ground troops. He was not pleased at the fact that he was going to retrieve such a dangerous implement of war, but he had little choice. The small army headed through the valley and heard only a faint rustle from the wind. The wildlife was non-existent and the valley was bare of any trees or plant life. Just a carved hole of dirt and rocks formed a path to the installation. They approached the facility and kept a wandering eye for Zerg. One marine past through a sensor and a loud siren blazed in the ears of the expedition team. From the lifeless dirt, sprang a well-knit series of automated defenses. Machine Gun Turrets, missile turrets and anti-air turrets began to appear all over the valley. The men dodged behind the heavy armor of their siege tanks, as the tanks locked into siege mode. The small force was pinned down and the fleet was busy with the anti-air turrets that began to lay waste to a few wandering wraiths. The siege tanks had taken heavy damage and several of the big guns had been silenced by guasse and missile turret fire. The heavy armor, creaked and moans as round after round began to dent the armor plates. The marines fired back with little effect and they knew they had to move or die. Reinforcements were air dropped, with the dropships taking heavy fire. Occasionally, one ship would be sent, burning to the ground, taking its cargo with it. Goliath's and more tanks arrived and thetide began to turn. Heavy siege fire torn holes in the defense lines and Goliath's supported by marines began to mop up the remaining few turrets left. Smoking craters and clusters of burning vehicles and dead bodies littered the ground. The force proceeded with caution, and was able to enter the facility with no signs of danger. They removed the heavy silo doors and revealed row upon row of silent sentinels. Missile after missile as far as the eye could see. The cargo was loaded and they departed Tarsonis, each ship with enough explosives to destroy Aiur ten times over.
The massive ships returned to Korhal, and it was then that Raynor, Zeratul and Artanis had reached Aiur. Kerrigan had still not gained consciousness, and Raynor refused to leave until Kerigan had regained consciousness. Zeratul and Artanis left Raynor on his ship and the two went before the council. They were amazed to see Zeratul, alive and well, and they listened as Zeratul explained that Duran intended to invade Aiur. The council listened, but Tosha still did not believe that they would need the help of the Dark Templar.
"Tosha, you must forget the ideals of old. Our people must be united in ordered to defeat Duran. If we fight as two, Duran will eliminate us both. We must be united and strong, Protoss, Dark Templar and terran."
"Terran? We do not need the help of a lesser species. They can not help us and they are two weak to do anything except get in our way. Artanis, I believe the council had agreed not to seek help from the Dark Templar. Now we must seek the help of the terrans as well?"
"You are wrong Tosha, we must unite to defeat Duran. When will you learn that we can not merely rely on our own strength to fight? The conclave believed that they did not need to worry about the invading Zerg and we were almost destroyed. Do you wish to follow in that tradition?"
"The council shall vote on the matter, then we shall see what Aiur has to say about these alliances you have forged."
"There is no time for your voting and your policies. We must act before it is too late. Your foolishness shall be the end of us all!"
"I would advise that you show some respect to the council Artanis. You may be praetor, but you are not our master."
"If you will not stand by me, then I shall fight without your help. Perhaps when Aiur is in ruins, then you can see the error in your decisions."
Artanis and Zeratul left and made preparations for the defense of Aiur. Photon Cannons and the Dark Templar forces were deployed and corsairs roamed the skies, in search of Duran's ships. Raynor and his forces were also deployed, but Raynor still remained at Kerrigan side. About a day later, Kerrigan awoke, tired and confused. She opened her eyes and saw Raynor standing over her. She was too weak and could barley move. She spoke slowly and quietly to Raynor as he leaned close.
"Why didn't you kill me?"
"Couldn't do it darlin, not to a friend."
"But after everything I've done."
"It wasn't you, that was another person. Someone who doesn't exist anymore, now it's only Sarah and Raynor, just like the good old days."
Kerrigan fell back asleep still holding Raynors hand. Raynor kissed her on her cheek and left to help Zeratul and Artanis with the preparations to defend Aiur. As of now, these preparations were all that stood between Aiur and Duran. They had no idea of what Duran's numbers were and they knew less of when he would attack. One and one thing only was crystal clear, Duran was coming and Hell was coming with him.
