The Adventures of the Hunter II
Chapter II
Daniel Owens was sipping his drink and talking with his new Medic “friend”. Julie was getting a little tipsy from all of the drinks she was having. She repeatedly bumped into Danny, trying to get him to see what she wanted, and it was obvious to Danny what she wanted…
Just then, the alarm sounded again. Danny walked outside again, expecting to see only a small attack force. Only he was wrong, it was an attack force all right, but it was a BIG one. Several Overlords were emptying their cargo throughout the entire Terran base. Zerglings, Hydralisks, and a few Lurkers were running, shooting, burrowing all over the camp. Spines began shooting in every direction. Danny put his personal cloak on and ran back into the supply depot. He ran to Julie, who was waiting for his return.
“Julie, I have my cloak on. You have got to get into your Medic suit and go out to help. There is a large attack going on. We need you to heal injured soldiers, even if it does lead to cancer. Hurry, I don’t know how long this base is going to hold out…” said Danny. He said this in a quick but calm voice.
“Alright, let me get it,” said Julie.
Danny ran back outside into the conflict. It was a mess. Only a few Overlords were left. Danny decided to target them first. Julie had just come out of the Depot, when a wing of Mutalisks came flying overhead. They started to attack the nearest Bunker that still had troops in it. The Zerg troop count was dropping, but not as fast as the Terran’s. Then Danny had an idea. He looked around for the densest pack of troops he could find. He saw it.
“Command Center, this is Ghost 1. Can you evacuate without getting killed?” asked Danny.
“This is Command Center. Yes we can with enough wraith support. But most of them are out trying to kill those Overlords so their cloak can go into effect,” replied the Lieutenant on the Com-Link.
“Tell them to screw the cloak. I am going to Nuke your area when you guys are clear,” said Danny.
“Are you crazy? What if we don’t clear the area?” replied the Lieutenant.
“Do it or we ALL die!” yelled Danny.
“Fine,” said the Lieutenant. “All Wraith Squadrons. Cover for the Command Centers evac. Have the Valkeries take care of the Overlords.”
A large Squad of Wraiths responded. Circling the Center, they protected the Dropships as they came in to dock. Most of the Marines in the base were dead or in hastily built Bunkers. The few who weren’t in Bunkers were bravely taking on burrowed Lurkers. The few Tanks that were targeting the few ground units that were far enough away to not do damage to their fellow Terrans. Most of the Turrets were either heavily damaged or littering the base with rubble. There were still many Zerg left, most of them attacking buildings near the Command Center or the Center itself. Most of the Lurkers were dead, as they were targeted first. The Hydras were trying to shoot down the Wraiths, who were now cloaked. Just then, the Dropships lifted from their escape ports. The only thing still working was the Nuking system in the Silo. The Silo itself was incredibly damaged, but still online.
Nuclear Missile Ready
This message buzzed through Danny’s Com-System. Danny sized up his target. The best possible barrage would be right on top of the Silo itself.
The red dot appeared on the Silo. The countdown began:
10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1… “Nuclear attack canceled.”
This message buzzed in Danny’s ear for about five seconds. He realized that the Silo had been destroyed.
“ONE DAMN SECOND!” thought Danny violently. He began shooting at the Hydras surrounding the Command Center. One, two, three, four Hydralisks were killed before Danny realized the fruitlessness of his attacks. He called out for Julie, who, miraculously, was still alive and healing Marines.
“Julie, tell the Marines to disengage and retreat. The base is done for,” said Danny.
“No! There’s still hope. We can beat them,” said Julie a little defiantly.
“We’ve got to, or everyone dies,” replied Danny.
“But…”
“No buts! Let’s go, NOW!”
The Marines began to back away, still firing. They took another dose of Stim, and ran for their lives. They had fought bravely, but they knew of their defeat, and the fact that they needed to retreat. They charged to the rear, as it were.
Just then, Danny’s cloak ran out of energy. “Shit.” He began to run in the direction the Marines were headed. Siege Tanks unsieged, troops ran away, Wraiths flew overhead, everything was in chaos. Then Julie let out a piercing scream. A Hydralisk had sent a parting shot her way. A large spine was sticking through both ends of her upper-left leg. Danny ran to her as well as another Medic. Danny ripped out the offending spine as the Medic healed her friend. When the “repairs” were done, Julie had fainted. Danny hoisted her up onto his back and began to run. He headed towards where the Marines had fled, but Danny fell behind. Julie weighed about 160 lbs. Even though Danny could have easily held her, it was hard to run and carry her at the same time. He soon became tired and had to rest. He found a suitable hiding place in a small thicket. He set Julie down, and lied next to her. He almost immediately fell asleep.
That night, he had a dream. He watched the battle take place in his mind. Everything was moving so much slower. Nothing seemed to realize he was there either. He walked around the battle area, watching everything happen. He headed over to the Command Center. He approached the Silo. He saw himself a small distance away, preparing the Nuke. He saw the dot appear on the Silo, and began to walk away when he noticed something. Something had just entered the Silo. He ran the entrance hatch, only to see what looked like a boot turn a corner. He chased after it, only getting small glimpses of the thing. The thing (“Who or what is this?” thought Danny) turned into the Nuke launching area. As Danny rounded the corner, time speeded up to normal again. Danny could hear noises coming from the room. “Someone’s tampering with the Nuke!” thought Danny. Danny turned the corner and the thing turned around. “It’s—“
“DANNY! WAKE UP!” shouted Julie.
