The Starcraft Chronicles: The Hybrid Wars Episode III
Kerrigan began to regain feeling in her arms and managed to lift herself off the ground. She still could not feel her legs and the fact her Zerg regeneration was not helping scared her. She leaned up against a wall and eyed the darkness for her cellmate. The electric collar around his neck gave away his position. He too was tied in chains and Kerrigan had the eeriest feeling that she was being watched. Not by the Templar, but by another.
"So Zeratul, does it please you to see me humbled this way?"
"More than you could imagine Kerrigan. It is good to see you in such a fragile state. I can smell the fear on you."
"That is ridiculous, I am the Queen of Blades! I fear no one!"
"Please, spare me your act Kerrigan. I can tell you are scared. You are scared because you do not know what will happen here. You are vulnerable and you are powerless, just like when Mengsk left you on that platform all those years ago."
"Silence! You know nothing about me or my past. You don't know what I have gone through to establish my authority. You don't know a damn thing about me."
"That is true, but I have a feeling our captor is one who knows a great deal more about you than I ever will."
The cell door opened and in stepped Duran. He was flanked by two hybrid soldiers and Kerrigan was sure to keep her distance from their blades. This new Duran was not the simple agent she had seen during the Brood Wars. This was a sadistic and dangerous man, who had spawned an army of crossbreed minions.
"It is good to see you up and about Kerrigan. I though for sure that collar would have left you unconscious for quite a while. Did you sleep well?"
"How dare you do this to me Duran! After all I have done for you and this is how you repay me! You would dare to treat your queen in such a manner?"
"Kerrigan you do not know what you have stepped into. I never gave a damn about you or the Brood Wars. I had my own agendas and you were just a pawn. I played you like a harp from hell and I gave you everything you needed to win the Brood Wars. I gave you the keys to the kingdom and now I am here to collect on my investment."
"I will kill you Duran. No matter what I will have your head on the end of my spines!"
Duran reached into his pocket and pulled out a small remote. He hit a small red button and a surge of electricity ran up Kerrigans spine. Again she collapsed in a heap and the guards dragged her away. Zeratul was left in the cell and could hear screams from down the hall as Kerrigan pleaded for her life.
Planet Korhal, Imperial Throne Room
Mengsk had waited to meet with Raynor who first had to sober up. It had been years since Mengsk had seen Raynor and according to the reports, Raynor was a mess. The former commander stumbled into the throne room and looked as haggard and worn as he had five years ago. He still had the same torn and dirty uniform he had worn for years. Raynor gazed over at Mengsk and he saw the same tyrant who had ordered him around since the Sons of Korhal. Raynor had little left in his life and was willing to hear Mengsk through and see what kind of deal he would give him.
"Could I offer you something to drink Jim?"
"No I think I had enough from your boys smashing my head in with a bottle."
"I must apologize for their behavior, they are just a little nervous."
"You mean the raids on the outposts?"
"How did you know?"
"Had a little chat with one of the guards. Seems your little Dominion is in for a world of hurt. So my question is, where do I fit in?"
"Always to the point, eh Raynor."
"Wouldn't have it any other way."
"Very well, we need help from a military other than our own. We need the Protoss to help us. However the Protoss do not seem to like me or the Dominion. I need you to talk with the praetor and see if a negotiation can be reached."
"And if I decline?"
"In that case you are free to go. No tricks or backstabs, just a ride home. Then when these aliens come and wipe every man, woman and child off the face of our worlds, you still have your alcohol to fall back on."
"Dammit Mengsk you know that isn't fair. True but it is the truth. Let's face it Jim you can either help me or let billions of innocent lives perish. The choice is yours."
"Raynor thought long and hard. In his mind he didn't want to help a snake like Mengsk. In his heart, he knew that he had to help for the sake of the people.
"All right, I'll see if I can pursued the Protoss into helping your sorry carcass."
"Good to have you aboard Jim. You leave for Shakuras immediately."
"Shakuras? I thought I was going to speak to Artanis."
"That is correct but our intelligence reports have Artanis headed for Shakuras."
"I wonder why he's going there?"
Why indeed, Artanis knew the council was against any alliance with the Dark Templar and he knew that if he was caught it would be, as Raynor put it, shit hitting the fan. But the Dark Templar and the rest of the Protoss needed to be united if they wanted to survive. Artanis arrived at Shakuras and met with the new matriarch, Moranda. Moranda was the second eldest Templar of her people and she was the next obvious choice to lead her people. Artanis met with Moranda at the Xel' naga temple and tried to convince her to come with him.
"I am grateful that you have agreed to meet with me. It is imperative that I warn you of a certain danger that looms over all our heads."
"I am glad to again see you Artanis and hope that tragedy has not struck our people."
"Thankfully, this new threat has attacked the Zerg and Kerrigan. I fear that our people will be next to fall to this alien race. They appear to be the same hybrids that Zeratul found six years ago. If they are then Duran is behind these attacks and they will strike at Aiur and perhaps Shakuras."
"If you are correct then we must prepare for war. What do the Protoss say, will they fight?"
"I fear that ignorance and pride of old has infected the new generation of warriors. They are opposed to the rejoining of the tribes and wish to stand alone."
"It is sad that both sides can not coexist. But we shall not allow Aiur to fall. I will send an army with you and our fleet will be at your disposal. for now, you should rest and tomorrow we shall organize our warriors to depart with you."
"I can not begin to share my gratitude and I hope that one day the tribes will unite."
"For now hope is all we are able to cling to."
Hope. A thought far from Kerrigans mind. See saw the world pass before her and was unsure if it was a dream or reality. She was being dragged back to her cell and she tried to break free and could barley move. The two guards threw her into the cold pit and locked her back in chains. Several hours passed and she was able to move again. Her body ached and she felt strange. She felt her head for any wounds and felt a small sting. She pulled her hand back and saw that her spines had broken in her hand. Then she noticed her hands were much fuller in color and no longer looked pale and gray. Kerrigan noticed a slight tingling sensation on her head and scratched at her scalp. Again she pulled her hand back and saw a fist filled with spines. Among the spines was something else. She looked over the spines and saw strands of…hair. She was still confused and she was not sure what was going on. In anger she punched the steel wall and immediately screamed out in pain. Zeratul woke from his sleep and gasped at what he saw. Kerrigan too saw her knuckle split and bleed. The pain surged through her and finally the realization dawned on her. The blood that flowed from her, was human.
