This is an all text report. So, if you have the reading comprehension of a Lemur, an attention span of a 5 year old, suffer from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), or have to take Ritalin on an hourly basis. Then this report will not be for you, so hit the back button now and go to the search engine and look up a “Bob The Newt” report if you suffer from the above. ;-)
Note: I'm teasing, I love Bob The Newt's reports and wish he did more. :)
Hello all, while you all know me as the man that gives feedback reports on other peoples battle reports. I did see a pretty good game between 2 old Air Force buddies of mine the other day, so I decided I will bring it to you all in a battle report, woo hoo.
Unfortunately I did not get any screenshots, due to my print screen button being stuck. It was about one month ago that my keyboard decided to start a fight with a can of soda sitting nearby, and well, the keyboard won, but did get the cans life juice all over itself. I got most of it cleaned up, but due to the fact I rarely use the print screen button, the first time I did use it, it jammed and all the screen shots were wasted in no time at all. :-(
So sit right back, pop open a cold one, and prepare to...
Give the Devil his due
The Players
Navyzeal-A very capable Starcrafter and my partner in many 2vs.2's. He is an exceptional Zerg player, with debatable Protoss skills and an average Terran game. His favorite offensive move is Mass Hydra/ling drops with Muta back up.
LoopaLoop-Another competent Starcraft player who prefers to do 1vs1's or FFA's. He is a loner, that depends on his own skill to win, and doesn't need or want others help. Pretty good Toss player, but is known to take big risks with them. Above average Zerg skills, and a dastardly bad Terran game. He hates Terrans with a passion. His favorite offensive move is Reaver Drops. Oh, BTW, he is the Devil, at least I think so. I heard once while playing an old AC/DC record backwards, “oop ta de da LoopaLoop is the Devil.”
The Map—Hot Zone
With some squabbling between Dire Straits (LoopaLoop’s favorite map) and Lost Temple (Navy’s choice) they both decided to have it settled by letting me pick the map, heh heh heh. When they got into the game they were pissed at my selection, of Hot Zone (My favorite).
For those that don’t know Hot Zone. It’s a 4 player map that is 128x128 desert tile set, with each starting location in each corner. 2 expansions close to each base, one with gas, the other without. And 5 other expansions outside the 4 mains including a large one in the center of the map. This map has cliffs with and without ramps making multi-level play possible.
Now before the countdown, Navyzeal wanted to go random, and expected LoopaLoop to do so as well. LoopaLoop bitched moaned and groaned for 10 minutes, but eventually agreed begrudgingly. I hit the start button, and at the last second, LoopaLoop switched his race to Protoss, the dirty little Devil that he is.
Beginnings
Navy Being a little upset with Loop’s devilish deception on the countdown, lands his command center in the NorthWest corner and orders his SCV's to mine minerals. He then begins a build order as such.
8-Depot
10- Barracks
11- Depot
13- Barracks
13- Gas
15- Academy
Navy, after finishing his first barracks, sends that SCV scouting out towards the bottom corners of the map, seeking out Loop.
Loop, meanwhile, had warped in his Nexus in the NorthEast corner and promptly sent all 4 of his probes to their minerals and began to warp in buildings from Aiur like so.
7- Pylon
9- Gateway
11- Gateway
12- Pylon
14- Gas
15- Cybercore
After warping in the second Gateway, Loop sends a probe directly at Navy’s base, while Navy’s SCV had just arrived at the SouthEast start locale after exploring the right side first.
Loop's probe surges across the ground and runs smack into marine fire in front of Navy's two barracks and meets its demise. But the probes lose is gained by the Intel Loop gathers, for with the double barracks and early academy, he thinks Navy is now possibly going for an early M&M or F&M&M assault.
Navy, meanwhile, sends that scouting SCV over to the SouthWest starting location. Possibly thinking of a first expansion there, but we will see. But even though Navy knows where his foe is, he does not have any early Intel on what strategy he may be deploying.
They melt in your mouth, but not in your hands
Navy pumps out Marines, and when his academy finishes gets Medics from his 2 barracks and starts a ComSat station.
Meanwhile, Loop prepares his base for the inevitable attack of M and M’s and plops down a forge. While the forge begins to warp in, he adds 3 dragoons to go along with his 2 zealots and stations them in front of his base. He makes 2 cannons just behind the three dragoons just as Navy moves out of his base towards him with 8 marines and 3 medics.
During Navy’s trek over to Loop, he begins a factory at home. The M&M’s make their way over and station just in front of Loop’s base. Loop, though, sees the marines as they come in front of his base single file. He sends his 2 zealots out and immediately take fire from the marines. And with turning around, he brings the M+M attack into his goons and cannons. Navy must have been checking on his com sat or his factory cause he didn’t notice his marines leaving on their own without orders, and leaving 2 of the 3 medics where he stationed them.
The battle is swift and fierce as bullets fly, healing begins from the 1 medic that did follow, warp blades slash, and plasma balls fire. Blood soon litters the ground as the marines are dispatched in quick order, with only the 1 zealot losing its life to the brief assault.
Navy lets out a verbal shit to both myself and his competitor and recalls the 2 medics back to his base where 4 new marines are now stationed. After his Factory finishes, he begins a Machine Shop add-on, and starts a second Factory. What could he be going for folks, Tanks or Vultures with mines? More on that in a moment.
Loop decided to play his hand of what exact strategy he would be going for as he warped in first a Robotics Facility and a Citadel of Adun, adds another 2 pylons, and starts the wheels of his first Forge spinning. Suddenly blue sparkles shine over Loop’s base, and his plans of what he may be doing, may be now known.
Now back at Navy’s base, he produces a tank from his first Factory while adding a Machine Shop to the second. The tank rolls over towards his CC, and after the research finishes, sieges there. More tanks are produced from the dual Factories and he soon has 6 tanks with about 10 marines and 4 medics. He places another tank by his mineral line, thinking possibly, that a Reaver Drop would soon be coming. With the 3 tanks, 8 marines and 3 medics, he makes his way from his base and towards Loop. Navy , while his troops march out, orders his SCV in the SouthWest main to begin a Command Center there.
Loop has not been sitting idly by though, and with Navy making his way to him, he had already warped in a Templar Archives, and decided to expand to his cliff natural with gas. He starts a Nexus and with a Pylon warped in prior starts 2 cannons on the cliff edge for protection, just as Navy arrives with his Tanks and M&M’s.
The battle is quick as no defense, other than the cannons, are visible. And with cannons not yet warped in, they quickly fall to the Tanks dual blast cannons. After the cannons fall or cancelled, he sieges up the tanks and begins to rain fire, and indiscriminate justice, down upon his foes base with a vengeance. Loop, cancels his Nexus and sends his 5 Dragoons and 1 zealot to rid himself of these Metal Gods, but before they can get to them, they take machine gun fire from the 8 Marines stationed just at the top of the ramp. And with taking 2 Goon and the Zealot loss, he pulls the remaining 3 goons back and out of range. The tanks continue to pound away, but Navy must not have been giving them verbal orders for they concentrated first on some pylons before attacking anything of importance. After the Pylons fall, the Tanks focus fire on 1 of the 3 gateways. But suddenly a sound must have rang out in Navy’s ears of “Your Under Attack.” Cause the tank by his CC suddenly went up in a burst of fire and metal fragments.
Now you see me……...Now………You Don’t!
The tank by Navy’s CC explodes, and a sound of swiping blades can be heard on his ComSat station. Navy quickly heads the call, and responds with a ComSat that shows Loop’s fiendish invisible demons, and with a thundering “Boom, Boom, Boom” from the tank by his minerals and the few that were at his front line and in range, whipe their existence from his base. But the victory was tarnished, as the tanks, destroyed the ComSat station as well. Navy hurriedly commanded a SCV to construct a Engineering Bay and restarted a new ComSat, when more blades were suddenly heard tearing apart mining SCV’s at will. 2 more of Loop’s devilish fiends had not come into the combat zone on the first attack, and were now wiping out his mineral workers. With a grunt of anger, Navy runs the remaining SCV’s from the killing zone, and hurried to finish the EBay. Then, a sound of shrieking occurred from Loop’s base.
The scream went out for a ComSat, as marines died one at a time to unforeseen forces above Loop’s main base. But the call fell on deaf ears, as the new ComSat was not yet completed, and was now under attack by those 2 DT’s in Navy’s base. The Marines and Medics fell, the 3 tanks destroyed the Gateway they had been pounding on, and had the Templar Archives smoking, before their fate was dealt to them by the cloaked assassins. And the new ComSat was cancelled at the last minute, saving valuable money for Navy.
A Missile Turret was erected, quickly, by his front line Tanks and M&M’s, but his rear Tank, and several Depots continued to be attacked without no detection around. Navy started a new ComSat at his SouthWest expansion, but as it finished, there were no depots left to save at the rear of his main.
The Battle has just begun…
With both players attacks being successful. Both players leaned towards re-building their economies instead of trying a knock out blow. To this point, Loop probably believed with taking out Navy’s several depots and forcing his mains CC to take flight, that he had the upper-hand in resources. But, Loop, was hurt as well supply wise by losing several pylons, and his first attempt to expand. And with the Missile Turret in place by Navy’s front line defense of 5 Tanks and 2 Bunkers, that still had his main structures intact. He knew an attack with his 8 DT’s and now 5 Goons may not succeed, and with thinking that Navy had no source of income at the time. Loop opted to get a larger army, and needed to get an expansion going to do so.
But Loop was wrong about his opponent, as Navy did have an expansion going down south from his main base, and with his mains CC floating towards his cliff natural expansion. He began to get his money flow going again, by sending the remaining SCV’s to his bottom right expansion and begins to make some defense there of a Turret, and 2 Bunkers with 2 Marines in each. Upon landing the CC on the cliff natural expansion by his original main, Navy had 3 marines and a medic meet it up there with an SCV that built a Missile turret next to the landing CC. Before long, that expansion was up and running with some SCV’s maynard from the SouthWest expansion.
His opponent on the other hand had expanded twice, to his mineral/gas cliff expansion, and his mineral only expansion. Loop added more pylons, another forge for upgrades, and 3 more gateways bringing his total to 5. He upgraded his range on his goons, and had his land troops at 2-0-0, with both forges spinning meaning more upgrades coming. He sent a lone DT to scout down in the SouthEast starting location, and seeing it free, sends a probe that way to start another expansion. All the while continuing to get more Dragoons and Dark Templar.
Navy though could see the expansions that Loop had claimed through several ComSat sweeps. After making the first of three Starports in his SouthWest Expansion, 2 Dropships were made and sent to his original main in the North picking up 2 Tanks, 5 Marines, 2 Medics, and an SCV. Navy sent those units over to the cliff mineral only expansion that separates the two. This expansion has no ramp and with landing them just out of range of Loop’s mineral only expansion below. Builds a Turret, and a Bunker by the cliffs edge, he brings up the Tanks, and performs a classic Turbo Newbie. The tanks immediately fire, destroying 3 probes on the first strike. Loop attempts to pull his remaining probes away, but to no avail, as they are too blown away from Arclite Seige Fire.
Loop not appreciating this defiance against his evil, immediately loads 4 dragoons and 4 DT’s into 3 shuttles and approach to quell this threat. The shuttles arrive and quickly unload their cargo, one shuttle is blown apart from anti-air missiles and fire from the 5 marines. But the cargo was dropped and the Newbie removed with relatively minimal losses of 2 Dragoons, 1 DT and the probes below. Loop soon brings over a probe and promptly begins another expansion bringing his total to 4 expansions and his main, with Navy starting another expansion at the SouthWest mineral/gas natural bringing his total to 2 expansions with a new main.
Loop decides that the time to end this game is now, and sends 2 control groups of Dragoons, with 8 Dark Templar in chase towards Navy’s original main base.
And a Goonie-goo-goo to you
The battle that ensued was messy to say the least. For as the first goons got in range of the base, several Tanks shelled them. Blue robotic fluid filled the empty spaces on the desert ground, but more and more goons soon arrived firing off their mobile plasma cannons upon the tanks. The marines fired from their bunkers hoping to bring down these now 2-1-1 four legged nightmares. The Terrans fought valiantly, but with having no upgrades on their weapons or armor, soon found their graves in the sand, as the DT came in shredding their bunkers and destroying the last Tank. Soon the buildings that could take off, did so, moving so slowly away from the field of battle. All in all though, only the Engineering Bay was able to momentarily escape the remaining 8 Dragoons from their plasma weapons. The buildings fell quickly as 6 more Goons showed up and helped to rid the few remnants of Navyzeal's original main base.
Loop offers up a “GG” to his opponent, and waited a few seconds for a reply, for which none came. He repeated his “GG”, but still not receiving any confirmation from Navy. Loop gets a little angry and replies with a “Fine be an ass.”
Loop was unsatisfied with Navy’s lack of respect and deployed his remaining forces up the ramp to Navy's expansion there, and with quick order destroyed it with ease. But what Loop didn’t expect was not seeing that he eliminated his foe. And replied as such, “Ah, you can run, but you can’t hide.” And with that, Loop his 14 Dragoons, and 6 Dark Templar, now at 2-2-2, move toward the center expansion. Finding nothing there, the group moves towards the SouthWest main area, when the come under fire from a Tank up top of the SouthWest cliff natural expansion. Loop must have hit “A” and clicked inside the expansion area, for his DT’s clamored up the ramp and began to mill around like the computer does when you have it blocked by something. With 3 depots in front of the ramp, and 3 Tanks behind it with a Turret spinning, the DT’s don’t know what hit them, and before Loop realizes what happened, he only has one DT remaining, and he joins his Templar brethren in a grisly death in only mere seconds.
Loop pulls back his 14 Dragoons, but loses 3 of them while doing so. He orders his Goons to proceed down to the SouthWest starting location, and after not making any troops after the attack on Navy’s NorthEast original main and expansion, hurriedly lays down another Gateway, while pumping more Goons and DT’s from the other 6.
Meanwhile, Loop’s Goons run into the 2 bunkers protecting Navy’s SouthWest Main expansion. The Goons fire repeatedly and destroy both bunkers while losing 3 more Goons in the process. Loop’s forces move into the base, but from behind, laser blasts begin to strike the Goons. The Goons turn and fire at the first of 6 1-1-1 Battlecruisers. Needlessly to say, the Battlecruisers extinguish the remaining Goons, which gets a reply out of Loop.
LoopaLoop"holy shit, howd you get those?”
Navyzeal “Magic ;-)”
Magic, indeed, went through my mind. Navyzeal had successfully hide his real intentions, while making Loop think he was still going for ground. But Loop was far from out of the game, and with 4 Expansions still running (2 were almost out of minerals, with the other 2 still having a good amount.), had to have a nice chunk of minerals in the bank. Navy meanwhile has only 1 expansion at his cliff natural bringing in minerals, but had just floated a CC up on the non-ramp Mineral only.
Warm up the Scarab, cause he’s about to sing!
Note: To those that never heard of Scarab, he is a self-proclaimed fat man.
Navy having used ComSats effectively on his opponent, knows that his time to attack has got to be now. And with sending out his 6 Battlecruisers with a newly made Science Vessel, he heads out towards Loop’s SouthEast expansion. I also noticed something in Navy’s base. His Science Facility light was a blinking madly, oh those Terran Scientists never sleep.
Loop stayed level headed though, and continued to pour Dragoons from 4 of his Gateways, while making 2 Templar from another, and had DT’s coming from the last. He immediately, and smartly, merged his DT’s making the dreaded Dark Archon, and with Feedback not needing to be researched it looked as if he would rock those Battlecruisers world. And in a last move before the biggest battle of the game, Loop started to make his first of two Starports.
The Battlecrusiers moved slowly over the landscape as the probes at the SouthEast expansion mined happily along, not realizing that their fate was soon going from happy to grim. Lasers soon filled the expansion smashing probe after probe, and the lone defending DT, who must have wished his executor had an Arbitar to recall him. The expansion fell, and without no reply from the Protoss Executor, the Crusiers left, the same way the arrived.
Meanwhile up in the Protoss base, 12 newly made Dragoons, 3 Dark Archons, and 2 Templar, lay in wait for the Terran Behemoth’s to arrive…
But as time passed, and no enemy units on the horizon, Loop sends a lone probe, unwittingly may I add, down to investigate where those Battlecrusiers were. The probe ran as fast as it’s hover thingy could carry it. And with arriving at the SouthEast expansion, found nothing.
Then, over the horizon of his mineral only, non-ramp expansion, the now 8 2-1-1 Battlecruisers, with 2 Science Vessels arrived to rain “holy terror” on top the defenseless expansion. But the Protoss Executor Loop was no fool, and immediately loaded a Dark Archon into a shuttle and dropped it off just out of range of the Crusiers attacking his expansion. And with a “Varump, Varump” began making the Battlecruisers feed off their own energy damaging them. But with a shock line from a Science Vessel, takes away the DA’s Kali energy. And with 1 blast from the 8 Battlecrusiers, no more Dark Archon.
It was at this time that Navy pulled off a move that both shocked, and surprised me of its genius. Navy EMP’s his own Battlecrusiers!
After self-EMPing, Navy sends in the “Doom Fleet” into the outskirts of Loop’s main. While ignoring his mined out mineral only, he sends the fleet into the 18+ Dragoons, 2 Dark Archons with an assortment of DT’s that would not be able to help, and 2 Templar. And hell did follow with him my friends, hell did certainly follow him in.
The goons charged with Dark Archons in close chase. An EMP flies out from one of the Science Vessels striking the hulls of 12 Dragoons, effectively robbing them of their much-needed shields. The battle was way out as Dark Archons attempted to feedback Battlecrusiers that had minimal energy, making their effect negligible. Dragoons died one by one, as the now separated Battlecrusiers continued their assault upon them. The Templar attempted to even the odds by letting loose several Psionic Storms, but only 2 of the Battlecrusiers were permanently erased. The day was Navyzeal’s as he finished off the last Templar and 2 Corsairs that arrived too late. The last official action for LoopaLoop was to give…
LoopaLoop- “GG dude. Sorry about calling you an ass earlier, when it’s clear, that I was the ass.”
Navy responded in good sport fashion…
Navyzeal- “It’s okay, it was a GG. I just got lucky. Let’s ally.”
And with that, the 2 players allied with one another making no one a loser.
After thoughts
- Always remember to scout possible expansion sites, even ones that may seem unlikely to be expanded too. This amazed me because Loop usually makes several Observers and has them patrol potential expansion sites, and he did not even make one Observer all game.
-Never, ever, assume the game is totally over until your opponent gives you the “GG” first. Loop wasted too much time trying to get his opponent to admit defeat, and wasted valuable smashing time.
-Never stop making units, even if you think you are about to win. You never know, they may have something up their sleeve. And like Navy, he did have something up his sleeve.
Well that’s it, I hope you enjoyed my first Battle Report in over 8 months. It was fun to write, I sometimes forget how fun this can be. Maybe I will join clan~nohunters sometime, and if you like my style, do a battle report on a game for you. And to finish this report off, I would like to quote Walter Chronkite…
"As it is. As it was. And as it shall be…"
Until next time. This is Sid6.9, signing off……………..
