After an extremely long hiatus from ever writing a BR I have finally returned to Brood War. I recently played a 40ish minute zvz that I'm about to describe. It was a really intense game so I didn't really get good screen shots. But hopefully this will be an enjoyable text report. Without further ado...
Map: Lost Temple
Players: Me = Angel{MIT}, RFT''HARD.COR = RFT
I spawn at the 3o'clock while RFT gets the 12o'clock spot. He chose zerg and I had intended to choose protoss, but ended up getting zerg. Well, since I hear that some people get up to about 1200 just doing 4 pools I'd figure I'd try to snag an easy win. Of course, you, oh gosu reader have noted that we are at 12 and 3; thus, obviously he scouted me with that first overlord and did what appeared to be about a 9 pool with a sunken and a couple of lings still in their eggs. Since the sunken wasn't quite done I snagged an easy pair of drone kills and ran when the sunken came online. Unfortunately, one of my little buggers got himself stuck on the way out, so I was left with a total of 7 lings. Hmm, oh well it was worth a try. I retreat my lings to the top of his ramp, see his superior numbers and run, run away to the top of my ramp. I grab a couple more kills as I furiously try to hatch some drones. I note with my overlord that he makes an extractor and that he has continued to hatch lings. By this time, I've managed to get a sunken up in my main, but guess what, my pool is exposed =[. So he does hit and runs on my pool until it dies and I get 2 or 3 lings during the process without losing any. I have cash flowing now and so I make a new pool and then a hat. I have 11 total lings now and my opponent lays off on the pressure as I see that he has been working on hydras. After my 2 ovies in his base make a narrow escape I figure I might as well muta since I'm really not that far behind in terms of economy. I start an extractor and then a hatch near my ramp while making a few more drones and mostly lings from my 2 hats. Once I get about 20 lings I take a look at his ramp and see that it is exposed. Well since the pressure has been on me for the past 5 minutes or so I decide to grab the top of his ramp.
RFT has maybe 8 lings along with 10-12 hydra. I have 24 lings (with speed) and more coming quickly. I take the top of the ramp and we play tag for about 8 minutes (no kidding). Net result is me killing a few hydra by anticipating his retreat and return tactic. He finally makes more lings and we kind of mutually annihilate one another with him coming on top with 5 or 6 hydra. I have more lings in my natural and 2 sunkens at the top of my ramp. He tries to pressure with 12-14 more hydra but retreats due to the sunkens. By this time I finally get 6 muta out and try to raid his peons but he has 2 spores up and so I end up doing a fly-by and picking off a stray hydra. By the way I did get a couple of ovie kills in here too. So I send my lings out (about 48) with 8 muties. I see hydra and lurkers coming out. Damn. Alright, I lose a decent chunk of lings before I can retreat. I bust out my own hydra den and try to sneak an expand at the 6 o'clock natural. Since he broke my ling contain he checks out the map and finds it about 1 minute after it completed. I got a buttload of gas and so I figure I can make my own lurkers. I also add another sunken on my cliff to force him to move his lurkers back a bit.
Earlier I had placed an ovie at his natural and see him lay a hat. Well we can't be having that, so I have maybe 10 hydra and 4 lurkers along with 30 or so lings left over. By this time my main is about mined out so I long distance mine my natural with about 15 drones which actually isn't too bad since I have a hatch at the top of my ramp. I send my muta up there and he sends most of his hydra back to the expansion, I quickly move an ovie out over my choke and bring my muta back to remove the lurkers. I get 1 and repeat the process killing a creep colony and a drone and then take out another lurker. He sends his stuff at me with about 7 lurkers 14-16 hydra and a few lings. I have a bunch of lings, a couple of lurks and some assorted hydra (and still 5 muta left =P). I end up winning the battle with about 6 hydra and a handful of lings. I know I have to take out his expand and so I morph 4 lurkers (for a total of 6) and send them to his natural. This attack is suprisingly successful getting a few drones, an unmorphed colony and a couple of hydra. Eventually he powers over my attack and goes back to mining, but it has been costly. I continue to pressure with lurker and keep him from mining much at all. I morph a small pack of lings and along with 2 lurkers am finally able to take out his drones and the hat. With that, he gives me a good game.
As it turns out, if you take a look at the final scores below, I was able to outresource him even though I failed in my 4 pool attempt. Turns out the positions on the map made all the difference as I was able to long distance mine effectively. There were some critical points at which the game could have gone either way with both myself and RTF giving "ggs" but then playing on and turning it around.
