Part 1
For a long time now, UED¡¯s (United Earth Directorate) Prime minister, Sir Brockwell Wenster, has feared the new presence of Protoss and Zerg in the Hodentile Sector, though they had yet to fire a single shot at Earth in combat. But, he¡¯s known about them for six uneasy years, ever since Earthtime July, 2236, when each of their fleets were seen landing at the massive resource node in Gregori planetary system by a roaming wraith scout before he was shot down. All along, he knew that their purpose was completely different from the Protoss and Zerg ever admitted, and his suspicion was correct.
Urging the UED¡¯s Royal Assault Force (UEDRAF) to strike them repeatedly, destroy aliens¡¯ presence before their bases ever become operational, Wenster, in Earthtime August 2240(while he was still First Lord of the Admirality, civilian head of the Interstellar Ground Force), wrote to the Assault Ministry:
¡°Even a few month¡¯s delay in assault will affect the whole balance of interstellar power to a serious degree.¡±
Two months after this message, he addressed the Combined Chiefs of Staff:
¡°The greatest prize open to Assault Command is the disabling of the Zerg and Protoss.¡±
Their bases were soon to become operational to the aliens¡¯ army. Wenster had been First Lord of the Admiralty during the Great war II, so was an old adversity of both Aliens and knew quite a lot about interstellar warfare. His current code name is ¡°Former Stellar Person¡±.
Thus far, April 2241, despite his urgings and attempted attacks by UEDRAF, neither bases has been disabled, and UED¡¯s interstellar experts in Grasteris estimated that the Protoss¡¯ base will soon be operable. Worse, the Zerg will be operable in a matter of months.
The idea is terrifying: Two major forces Roaming the universe to take over all other important resource nodes and coming closer and closer, destroying entire helpless colonies after destroying their initial defenses.
Only recently, UED had a painful sample of such destruction. Zergs Mutalisks and Protoss Scouts had destroyed colonies as far as the Korpulu Sector. Commanded by Daggoth and D¡¯ath, they¡¯d easily destroyed 40 battlecruisers with Thousands of tons of minerals and Millions of barrels of Vespene Gas, ready to be used.
It is of little surprise then, that this was exactly what Grand templars and cerebrates now had in mind-an operation coded Rheinbung, or ¡°Rhine Exercise,¡± the new encampments of Protoss to work with the equally powerful force, Zerg. They were trying to be like the great
At any rate, Wenster¡¯s fears were not at all goundless. During The Great War II, The aliens almost strangled UED by waging wars against the planetary nation¡¯s supply lines. What was happening now was a repeat. Protoss carriers destroyed any airborne UED Ships, while Zerg Ultralisks destroyed any ground Resistances. Zerg infested Ships-Completely Zerg-Infested UED ships disguised as friendly ships- were taking a toll, too. If the aliens do succeed in this latest attack, Wenster is of the chilling opinion that UED may not survive.
However, the aliens do not even have to deploy their soldiers to hamper UED¡¯s war efforts. Their mere existence in the Hodentile sector ties up a major portion of the UED Home Fleet. The Royal assault force must keep it¡¯s own battleships and ground troops in readiness in Feiaerost, North of Grasteris, in case the aliens do ¡°break out¡± and head for the Homeworld.
Wenster has dealt with that, too. "In no way could the aliens have used their powerful forces more effectively than by keeping them in readiness in their conquered sectors and allow various scouts get information of an impending sortie to leak out from time to time. We should have been compelled to keep concentrated at Hodentile sector or thereabouts practically ever new ship that we had. As ships had to go to periodic refits, it would have been almost beyond our power to maintain a reasonable margin of superiority. My thought had rested night and day upon this awe-striking problem.............."
When the war began, Earthtime September 2239, just after the aliens invaded the Hodentile sector, the UED had approximately 12,000 wraiths, 3,000 battlecruisers, and 40,000 ground and air troops of different assortments. The protoss had approximately 2,000 scouts, 200 carriers, and 3,000 ground and air units of various kinds. The zerg had approximately 5,000 mutalisks, 200 guardians, 200 devourers, and 10,000 ground and air assaulters of different kinds.
On paper, the UED was vastly superior to the combined alien fleet. But, most of the UED capital ships were over a half-century-old, of the great war II vintage. With their fast new fleet, the aliens might be able to tip interstellar the balance their way, even with fewer vessels.
