One day, during lunch, I went on Bnet to kill time, and created a game as I usually do - "1 vs 1 Play an Aussie" on my favourite map - Challenger. Within 20 seconds, my opponent joined, and brushing aside my "G'day!", ordered me to gogogogo!
This is what I like, a guy who doesn't muck around.
We both went random, and I got bottom terran, and he got top protoss. Thanks to a sticky mouse, my SCV's tripped over themselves trying to get to the minerals, and two of them ended up twiddling their thumbs waiting for their buddies to finish before they could move in. Eventually I got my sluggish economy on the road, and I went 8 Depot, 10 Barracks, 12 Depot, 14 Refinery, and then another Barracks and an Academy. I sent my 10th SCV out to explore, and miracle of miracles, did the job and came back out alive! Admittedly, he only had 4 points of health left, but he deserved to get a nice long vacation for that stunt. Unfortunately, I was in a nasty mood, so I squashed his pleas to see his family, and sent him to guard the enemy choke point in case of a zealot rush. Sure enough, six zealots came out shortly after, and bore down upon poor Eric. His last words over the com: "And tell my family I love th- AAARGHHH!!!"
Eric's sacrifice was not in vain - valuable time was gained in preparing for the zealot attack. Two bunkers were up already, and a tank was on the way. It rolled out of the assembly line just as the zealot force appeared, viciously attacking one of the bunkers. No siege mode researched yet, unfortunately. Eric's buddies repaired the flaming, badly damaged bunker again and again, as the marines inside prayed for the souls of all SCV's, especially those repairing their tin shed, as the protoss blades narrowly missed shearing their heads, piercing the bunker walls like butter. At one point, the bunker got to as low as 25 points, but the heroic SCV's won the day at last, as the last zealot incandensed into blue energy. I suspect it was brown trousers time for a couple of those marines, but never mind, at least their intestines were intact in order to fill those pants in the first place.
After that narrow escape, I researched tank siege mode, and started teching towards nukes. I also loaded four reluctant SCV's and four marines into a dropship, and started an expansion at the bottom left island. I had three VERY nervous SCV's around the map, two at the mineral only expansions, and one at the enemy choke point, waiting for the enemy to send them to join their poor mate, Eric. Somehow, even telling them their deaths would serve the Terran Empire did not console them. I could see on my screens that they fingered their loved one's photos constantly.
Time to check on what the enemy was up to. A comsat sweep later, I noticed to my surprise, at least two stargates producing carriers, with an arbiter tribunal going up next to them. As far as I could see, he hadn't expanded yet, at which I rejoiced. After ordering the eggheads at the science facility to research EMP shockwave, and building a few Science Vessels, I armed my single nuclear silo, and researced cloaking and optic implant for my ghosts. While that was going on, I still couldn't see any signs of the enemy expanding, except.... OH SH*T!! Where's that shuttle going with all of them peons? I followed its progress south towards the middle of the map, to reveal not one, but TWO flourishing island expansions, both well protected with cannons and goons! No wonder he could afford carriers without credit cards. Unbeknownst to me until then, he had plenty of money starting to come in to finance his carrier fleet. I would have to do something about that...
I sent the ghost Slick towards the nearest island expansion, eager to deal out death and destruction with his beloved nukes. He got there undetected, and did his stuff with his paintbox. A second later, the lovely female voice said the words that were music to my ears:
"Nuclear Launch Detected."
Damn, I forgot to shockwave the Nexus! I hurriedly sent a Science Vessel hurtling over to the expansion before the nuke landed. Missile away! The protoss shields go down a split second before the nuke lands. Oh, for this was I born!
My opponent: "You bastard."
Me: "Don't you just HATE that?"
Oh, I love it!
Slick was pretty happy too, but unfortunately, being a recently trained greenie, his cloaking energy ran out and he immediately headed for home. Having the luck of all my men whom I send out solo, he happened to run into a platoon of dragoons out on patrol, and died rather quickly. Oh well. He took many, many probes with him on his mission.
I sent out another ghost to try and nuke the other expansion, timing it so he would arrive there when the silo had fully rearmed. Unfortunately, my enemy had already guessed my intentions, and the air was thick with observers and the ground shook with dragoons on patrol. I lost two more ghosts before changing tack. This time, I floated an Engineering Bay to cover my ghost so the enemy couldn't target him. That worked a treat, and once again, the magical words appeared on the screen:
"Nuclear launch detected."
Once again, the nexus was shockwaved, and the nuke took the base out in one shot. I now know there is a God.
My opponent: "Damn your nukes."
Me: "I nuke, therefore I am."
As much as my opponent was enjoying all this, he was determined to end it for good. While I was in the midst of self-congratulation, I suddenly noticed a huge carrier fleet attacking my expansion on the bottom left island. Luckily, I had built a few ghosts at the local barracks, and after managing to lockdown five or six carriers, I shockwaved the fleet, and once more, launched that wonderful missile that Terrans love so much.
"Nuclear Launch Detected."
The carriers able to move away, moved faster than a tom cat on heat heading for a female. The lockdowned carriers were slower than molasses, in fact they stood stock still. That was unfortunate, as they happened to come into close contact with a curious object that dropped out of the sky, and made a rather big bang, wiping them all out.
It wasn't long before the surviving six carriers returned, this time with an arbiter. My expansion was in trouble. My local ghosts were all out of energy, and my turrets were being destroyed, and I had neglected to put major defences on the island. However, I wasn't too worried because the mining job was basically done - the island was almost mined out. I evacuated the SCV's in dropships, and started a new expansion at one of the two islands that I had nuked earlier. The enemy now had no operating expansions at this time, and I was determined to keep it that way. Hopefully, financing his carriers would become prohibitive.
Having floated my buildings to safety, his carrier fleet soon appeared on the west side of my main base, bent on destruction. While my buildings were being destroyed, I sent Jake the Ghost to the enemy main, to distract him with weird objects coming out of the sky, while my ghosts at my main proceeded to lock down carriers. Then appeared those magical words:
"Nuclear Launch Detected."
To my surprise, the carrier fleet immediately turned and fled! The only reason for this that I can think of is that the enemy thought I had targeted his fleet, since that was what I did before. Anyway, it gave me valuable time to launch yet another nuke on his main, courtesy of Jake.
At that point, my opponent said GG, and left the game. I love nukes so much! I used no other offensive weapon in this game, just as an experiment, and it worked wonders.
