Background: This particular map is a cut-out of a globe. It includes all of Europe, the north tip of Africa, the western part of Russia, and the Middle-East down to northern Iran. The object in this game is to own more beacons (territories) so when tax time comes (every 5 minutes), the player will get more money. You own territories by making a building around a beacon. The unit strenths have been changed. The most versatile unit (moreso than normal) is the marine, with an attack of around 13. They are cheaper and faster to make, basically the best and most efficient unit on the map. Once players realize this, numerous barracks pump out hundreds of marines. Bunkers are also strenthed (also more expensive and longer to make). This map is basically a marine war. Each side picks their country (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey versus France, Britain, and Russia).
Begining: I picked Austria and my ally was Germany ({dl}Omnipresent). Russia and France would pound him from both sides while I quietely invade more land and watch my army grow.. that was the plan, at least. At the start, I gathered my men from bunkers that were unnecesary and ivnaded Serbia, to my south. Germany invaded Denmark to get a little extra cash. We both upgraded our marines early in hope to gain crucial advantage over our adversaries. My attention turned south, to Albania, then east, to Greece and Turkey (since there were no players, neatrual computer units are placed at every unused beacon ,a bunker full of marines, a tank, not too much). Germany did not need much assistance to fend off Rusia's or France's advances. France had turned north, to unoccupied England to asses more resources. Germany made dropships and headed north to Norway and Finland to start a campaign there. Russia just made stiff bunker lines.
Middle of Game: Russia's ridged bunker line was directly east of Germany's hardened army. Any invasion attempt there would result in meaningless slaughter of German troops, with little casualties on Russia's part. Yet somehow, Germany managed to push his massive army east and force Russia to fall back. Germany captured Poland and started setting up defences there. France started to fortify his land and control the U.K. Meanwhile, I had begun to set up a new outpost in Turkey. I planned to fortify the choke between the only land entrance from Russia, and mass a large army there. This would take time, and I needed more funds to create a counter attack in case this failed. From my original base, I gathered an attack force and headed west, to Italy. Germany took Switzerland and had almost completed his campaign in the north. All the while, scouts showed Russia's lines to becoming stronger every second...
In the End: I had fortified Turkey and moved my army directly south of Russia, in attack position. Germany found some important news that I had suspected. It seems Russia had made a critical error in his attempt to create a stable western front. He had solidified only half of the land entrance to Russia's motherland. An army could simply walk north of the defense line, then march east to victory. Germany and I had coordinated plans: He would distract Russia by attacking his northern providences while I mobilized my troops north. Russia could not micro and fix his bunkers this way. Victory, or at least severe cripplment, was in sight. At the cue, Germany's massive army of about 100 marines headed north, then east as planned. I mobilized and took all of Russia's southern territories with little difficulty. I told my ally to advance and march to his capital, as would I. There, we would link up and kill Russia from the inside-out. It was all going according to plan, his main base was under severe distress. However, he managed to scrounge up an attack force, not strong enough to beat us, but to slow us down. He then gathered reinforcements to push us back. Seeing our immenent defeat, I moved my army east to knock out as many as unprotected buildings as I could. Germany's army withered, while mine kept destroying his depots and other essential buildings. Our campaign had ended when I withdrew my army to fortify the bunkers I had just made in Russia's once owned providences. Germany also saw another oppurtunity. It seems Russia had emptied out his western front bunkers to strenthen his army to counter our invasion. The bunkers were empty, and with a small attack force, Germany destroyed Russia's lines. Russia was naked, simply waiting for our next attack to finish him. Russia left the game after his lines were broken. This was a great victory for us. Now, we could simply hurl our massive armies far west, and destroy France. As suspected, the French gave little resistance, his homeland was destroyed. All that was left his old expanion: England. A few dropships of marines later, and victory was soon ours.
Afterword: A lot of people hate his map, often because of their inadequacy to see the value in the basic marine unit. After a player experiences this map a few games, he becomes really attached to it and enjoys playing. Such is the case with a few of my friends. They too, at first, hated the map. I find it to be one of the most enjoyable UMS maps ever. The key is to invade new land, gather money, and raise and army to invade part of enemy countries. Take over their resources to starve them, and keep pounding while fortifying youre new land. It's simple, just hope you picked a good country to start off with. |
