OPPONENT: Toss
ME: Terran (using an insane strategy)
Well, I read a little battle report below about mass mass goliaths on dire straits. I figure, what the hell, I'll try that. So I dust off the BW CD (havent played SC in about a month or two), stick it in the drive, and go to find a game.
4 hours 23 minutes later, I emerge from the game victorious (yes, thats right, this damned game took 4 hours 23 minutes.
Anyway, heres what happened.
I started out over in the bottom left as a terran, pumping up economy, getting 3 factories, mass producing goliaths. He ends up toss in the top right, and starts a reaver/goon build (something I wouldn't know till a bit later). Anyway, down pops a few goons on my base, my small few goliaths go to fend em off, and aided by my scv's defeat the vile crab walkers. More goons drop, more goliaths are produced, more fighting ensues, we both lose some crap, no real damage done, life goes on.
I start to float a CC for an expand, but as if by magic, out pops a reaver and goon to deal with that, which promptly go from spot to spot keeping me off isles.
At this point I'm pumping goliaths out the ass, doing my damnest to stay in this game, and finally I take an exp.
He in the meantime takes the center right exp (a mainline exp). Things continue on, a petty skirmish here, a petty skirmish there, but all in all I have enough 1/1 goliaths on my isle and main to keep him at bay. Quickly I start taking other expands, he does the same. However every time I get started, he seems to manage to wipe out my expands, I am at a severe disadvantage, and in real trouble. I start making some sci vessels, and begin to pray.
Finally, at around 1 hour into the game, he manages to get a mass drop off in my main, my main falls, and I'm down to 3 expansion isles. Oops, another big drop on my top middle expand, make that 2 expansion isles.
I'm clutching to life, pumping goliaths out of the 2 factories I managed to salvage from my main (they flew to my center left mainline exp), while he's taken both extra main bases, is still holding the center right mainline exp, and mid right. I decide I have to take top center exp to stand a chance, so I send alot of force there. Then, I see it, the finger of doom fleet. Sure, it had to come sooner or later, but now was not the time. I had alot of goliaths, alot of dropships, and about 3/2 upgrades on them and had to think fast.
Comsat showed he was headed from the top left (a main town he had expanded in) right toward my top middle newly built exp. 15 goliaths jumped in dropships from my center exp goliath production area, with about 6 sci vessels following, and landed on the far southeast edge of the top left main base. Running north they caught the carriers JUST as they were starting to shoot at the isle turret and goliath defences, catching them in a crossfire, and killing most of them before he could react. Quickly I began throwing up 4 starports in my mid south exp, filling every nook and cranny of that isle I could with starports (it was mined out, so there was a bit of room). Goliaths continued to hit the scene, while wraiths pumped out as fast as I could. A few more skirmishes ensued, where he lost close to 15 carriers, with me losing around 24 wraiths all in all.
Meanwhile I had taken mid left. I was doing ok there, but he had managed to slap together some more carriers and alot of goons in shuttles, and wiped it off the map. He quickly turned his carriers and flew for my mid south exp, taking out my wraith production facilities. Then he ran back around my center exp isle, and wiped out my top middle exp. I noticed he began warping in alot of cannons there, to keep me from taking it again. Knowing I was about as dead as can be, I decided to take a bit of a risk. I threw 75% of my total standing forces at his bottom right main base expansion. Goliaths were raining down chaingun fire and kicking some ass, and sure as the sun rises in the east, the carriers were coming to save it. Immediately the rest of my force flew north, to capture the nearly untouched mineral patch (I had mined down a slight bit before he had taken it). Overall on the map, the only other area with anywhere near as much cash was mid left, but it was over 3/4'ths mined out. Taking out several carriers in my southeast fight, he backed off to regroup, and I took the opprotunity to run like hell (seeing the arbiter he was bringing in as backup seemed to make those dropships fly one hell of alot faster).
I took the last of my cash, and built 4 bc's (out of 2 starports), along with researching yamato, then completely emptied my center left mainline exp of goliaths. Sure enough he soon killed it, but I was out of cash anyway, and figured my men would do better defending the smaller top center isle.
Now, he had cash coming out his ass, I was out, and down to 1 now dead mineral patch. However, see if you can picture this isle (I have screenshots, but it's 3:00 AM and I dont feel like posting em right now). I have 140 control, completely made up of goliaths, 6 sci vessels, 3 scv's, and 4 bc's. In other words, this island is PACKED with goliaths. I also took every flying building I owned and stuck it over my men. I hoped this would protect them from d-web. On top of all these goliaths, were my 4 bc's, which would occasionally fly out a bit d-matrix'ed to yamato and run a templar, dragoon, or carrier.
Then his attacks started. Interceptors anywhere, and I noticed, hey, these damned goliaths aren't doing anything. It seems goliath AI has a real hard time tracking and targeting interceptors, they were just kindof all dancing around, spinning and crap, trying to get a decent shot off. I found if I grabbed a group and constantly hit "attack" and then clicked on a spot of, ocean for instance, that they would immediately let loose their firepower on the interceptors. After this discovery, interceptors fell right and left, and the carriers quickly followed. A few similar attacks ensued.
At this point, it was basically a stalemate, I couldnt really attack him (he had managed to kill all my dropships in the fights, I was stuck on my isle other then 3 bc's, as he had killed 1 of them).
Finally at the 4 hour 29 minute mark, he decided to quit, and surrender to me. He couldnt break my isle, and had wasted all his cash replacing interceptors.
In any case, I laughed my ass of :), but I WONT be trying goliath thunder again.
Anyway, sorry if this report is a bit haphazard, I'm tired as hell, just had to post it, it was one halarious game.
