I chose this game because it demonstrates the value of fast development.
This game was played more than a hundred years ago (!) by 3 players :
Team 1 : Paul Morphy (If they had a chess world champ in 1858, it would have been him)
versus
Team 2 : Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard (both amateurs with high skills)
2 on 1 isn't so unfair at chess (compared to 2 on 1 at starcraft), but the 2 guys team has a noticeable advantage, because one guy often sees the moves the other doesn't.
The map: Paris Opera House , where Duke of Brunswick had invited Morphy. Morphy was fond of opera, and spent most of the evening watching the opera ,while Brunswick and Isouard paid much more attention to the chessboard =) ...
The species: Morphy: white
Brunswick & Isouard: black
The opening was a Philidor defence.
For those of you who don't know how is a chess game reported,
here are some tips :
-files are a,b,c .... h (left to right, from white's POV)
-ranks are 1,2,3 .... 8 (bottom to top, from white's POV)
-K = King , B = Bishop , N = kNight , Q = Queen , R = Rook , none = pawn
-! = good move , !! = excellent move , ? = bad move , ?? = blunder ,
!? = interesting move , ?! = suspicious move
-+ = check , ++ = checkmate
Got it ?
Ok let's start :
1.e2-e4 e7-e5
Most of chess games begin like this: both players push their e-pawn in order to control the center.
2.Ng1-f3 d7-d6
Morphy attacks the black e-pawn, which is now defended by the d-pawn.
3.d2-d4 Bc8-g4
The fight for the center has begun ! White's d-pawn and knight now threaten e5.Brunswick & Isouard decide to block Morphy's knight with their bishop: moving the knight now loses the queen...
4.d4*e5 Bg4*f3
Morphy doesn't care and opens the position by taking the e5 pawn. Black's reaction is quick: the white knight is taken.
5.Qd1*f3 d6*e5
Of course, Morphy takes the bishop in f3.
Black can now take the e5 pawn.
6.Bf1-c4 Ng8-f6
Choosing a fast development, White moves his king's bishop to the center, while Brunswick & Isouard's Knight jumps over the black pawns. It looks like both teams are preparing for battle.
7.Qf3-b3 Qd8-e7
The white queen and bishop are a direct threat to the f7 pawn.Black have no other choice but moving their queen to defend the weak pawn.
8.Nb1-c3 c7-c6
Morphy, feeling safe and confident, continues his development ... Brunswick & Isouard must be preparing something, for their pawn move seems useless at the moment
9.Bc1-g5 b7-b5
Showtime! White's minor pieces are all in action now, while the black ones are half-developed. Notice how Morphy's g5-bishop blocks the f6-knight. However, Brunswick & Isouard are planning to contain white with the help of their pawns : the white bishop must retreat, or it's dead ...
10.Nc3*b5 !!
Beautiful move!
Morphy gives a knight in exchange of a pawn and a strong initiative!
10. ... c6*b5
11. Bc4-b5 +
Black accept the sacrifice : Morphy's knight has fallen, taken by the c-pawn.
Of course the white bishop avenges the knight, "checking" the black king ...
11. ... Nb8-d7
12. O-O-O (castle queen-side)
Brunswick & Isouard decide to move their knight between the evil bishop and the black king. Will this be enough? White adds pressure on the immobilized d7-knight by castling on the queen side : the white d1-rook is a real threat on the open file.
12. ... Ra8-d8
13. Rd1*d7 !
The black rook is quickly moved to help defending the weak d7-knight. Is this enough ? Morphy doesn't think it is : he takes the knight with his rook, seeing a decisive combination.
13. ... Rd8*d7
14. Rh1-d1
Black take the offending rook, bringing his material advantage to one full rook ! BUT Morphy's pieces are ALL active now, for he has moved his last rook on the d file, while Brunswick & Isouard have 2 useless pieces : the f8 bishop and the h8 rook. If black manage to hold off Morphy's attack and activate all their pieces, they win; but is it still possible ?
14. ... Qe7-e6
15. Bb5*d7 +
Seeing d7 attacked again, black move their queen, freeing the f6 knight (see why? If the queen stays in e7, the f6 knight is immobilized by the g5 bishop). White moves in his last forces, taking the black rook in d7 with his bishop.
15. ... Nf6*d7
16. Qb3-b8 + !!
There is no choice for black : they take the white bishop with the recently freed knight.
Here it comes ! Morphy now sacrifices his queen !!!
16. ... Nd7*b8
Again, no choice for Brunswick & Isouard : the black king can't move, the black knight must take the white queen.
17. Rd1-d8 ++
The end : Morphy checkmates the enemy king with his last 2 pieces ...
See? You can give your enemy a material advantage if his pieces are less active than yours ...
