I used to play chess before and I can't remember ever reading a game report as nicely done as you have. If you had thrown in some fake Battle.net talk it could have been cool too but...
For those of you who don't know chess as well you should know that its the first game where BRs have been written for. The fact that both SC and Chess have both generated the desire in players to read such reports makes me feel that SC has a certain "Classic" quality that could make it go the distance.
Maybe the only problem with SC is that when you play on fastest you need to have fast mouse clicking which will detract older players. William R. Trotter who writes the wargaming section for computer gaming world magazine has stated often that RTSs hold no interest for him as outclicking a 13 year old on B.net is frustrating to him rather than strategic.
People have said that AOK has less of a need for fast clicking but SC still resembles chess more in terms of beginning middle and end games. In SC you have an infinite number of strategies that can happen within 1-2 hours max whereas an AOK game gets interesting only at that time.

I also think that speed is an important factor in SC, but between 2 skilled (fast) players, the winner is the one who has the proper strategy (I mean the one who risks an attack at the good moment, or with unexpected units, or manages to out-expand his opponent discreetly...)
IMHO chess can't be compared to SC because of the speed factor, and because both opponents know where enemy units are at anytime.
There are some interesting similarities though, such as the openings, which influence very much the mid-game and the end-game : the zergling rush reminds me of some bloody gambit, such as the scandinavian one...

Wow, this was an awesome chess game. I feel like a new side of chess has opened up to me after seeing this one game. Whenever I've played chess, I always go for the material advantage. Just trying to imagine how many moves and counter moves Morphy was thinking ahead boggles my mind.
That was a masterful game that he played...
On the subject of young and old in RTS gaming, I will say this. You see a lot more younger players doing RTS gaming just because of the fast clicking like somebody else has mentioned. That's why you see a lot of older gamers playing TBS (turn based strategy). Civilization II, an epic TBS, had a similar following for a long time and a lot of the hardcore players were older. Anyway, those are my thoughts.
Again, to PHEben... awesome job portraying this game, I wouldn't mind seeing more of these... :-)

The last game of Chess I played was a while ago with my dad, and I was soundly trounced. Maybe this will help me get back into 'shape'!
Seriously though, this is a very nice BR. It's original, (Trillions upon trillions of SC reports clog the lifeblood out of this site... THERE'S TOO MANY!!!), well-detailed, and I loved the fact that you a) chose a historical game of Chess and b) gave the information about dangers to the Black King, Move Co-ordinates and stuff like that.

I thought I would speak out for the older players, as I am their "leader" on this site as far as I know. I do ocassionally get irratated at being trounced by some 13 year old, but the reason I like SC better than many turn based games is because I can play a good game of starcraft in 10 or 15 minutes. I can play 3 or 4 good games in an hour while in some turn based game we are just getting to the good part.
Time gets very precious when you get to my age, so I like the fast action of SC.
Also very nice chess report PHEben. I used to play chess when I had more time, back when I was...younger, back in the BK millenia (before kids). |

To T.T.Boy : Have you ever played "blitz" (lightning) chess?
You'll need a chess clock to try it: set time to 5 min. per player ; the loser is the one who gets checkmated, or uses his whole time.Think FAST !

Anyway, I really enjoyed this. The pictures of each series of moves were great, especially if you're like me and can't play the game text style :(
I'd actually heard of this game as an example of sacrificing your attacking pieces (especially your queen) to set up an undefendable position for your opponent. The key factor is preventing your opponent from activating his superior numbers of attacking pieces. In SC the same style of play results in a containment game, which has become very popular... But an even more useful SC analogy is a "lurker lure" as in, sacrifice 24 or so lings on someone's defenses (hopefully dealing SOME damage) and then having lukers on hold position burrowed in his counter-attack path.
Highly enjoyable and a really great idea!
