This is a bargin-basement, 2-for-1 garage-sale report. In plain terms, no screens, no fancy html tricks, hell maybe not even line breaks. Too hard to do. And I'm writing this on borrowed time (I'm AWOL from computers homework)
Oops, lied already. Damn BR tags. This is a report of a game that I played a few dasy ago, that I orginally didn't intend to report, but it was sooo damn fine, I think I'm gonna have to. Pardon the sketchy-ness...
I had just finished a ~very~ rewarding Zerg v. Zerg ladder game, wherein i educated a Korean gentleman (he was nice, actually) about the value of spider mines against Dark Templar Seiged tanks against goons, lockdown against carriers and the use of drops as a expansion-removal tool. Was a great game. I enter NoHunters to see a face I havn't seen in ages.
Fractal_Wave: Necro!
Fractal_Wave: my pal!
Fractal_Wave: my partener!
Necrosausage!!: hi frac
(For those who don't know latin, Necrosausage translates literally as "dead meat")
I once played a 5-game series with Necro...losing 5-0. In the 6th game I belive my zerg took down his protoss. Suffice to say, he's a great guy to play with.
But enough character references. We see a message saying "2v2 in channle selee" and we decided to go rip up whoever's there. We find a gentleman named ----->Kas and another named [|)aemon, or some such collection of ASCII. They are our opponents in a 2v2 to end all 2v2s
The Map: You have 3 guesses, and two of them don't count. Yes, that's right

Necrosausage!!: Randoms to Blue Protoss @ 9:00
Fractal_Wave: Selects Teal Zerg at 6:00
Team [|)as--->Kaemon
---->Kas: Randoms to Purple Terran @ 3:00
[|)aemon: Selects White Zerg @ 12:00
Analysis:
Speaking in terms of "imbalance", the game should be ours. The two zerg should cancel out, leaving the protoss to defeat the terran. And then the sun will fall out of the sky. Daemon the Zerg can supply detection to Kas (terran, and the phear of fast Dark Templar from Necro is gone, leaving the terran open to acadamy rush me, the poor zerg with help from his ally. Any 'imbalance' talk is basically nullified
At least we got the two spots with single chokes ( 9 & 6). I (@ 6:00) however, am In fear of a well-executed turbo-newbie on my natural, or the tanking of my main from low ground between 9 and 6. But then necro would nail them. That's not really a threat.
Should be a good game.
It begins
Me and Necro spawn close to each other, which is good for protection from doubles. As one of our opponents has randomed, I do not scout with an ovie, instead sending it to Necro for detection. We discuss opening moves, and decide to "reach out and rush someone". My zergling-focused build looks something like this:
-8-overlord
-9-pool
-6 Zerglings, quickly sent with a drone to hit the Zerg @ 12:00
-Zergling, Zergling, Drone to 13
-2nd hatch
-More Zerglings
Necro's probe scout reavealed a walled-in terran, and a two hatcheries for the zerg. Technically speaking, this is known as "rush bait"
Round 1, Fight!
Necro brings a lone zealot, with more on the way. He's aiming for a 3-gate zeal rush.
I send in 6 lings and a drone for an offensive sunken, just to be extra gay.
VERSUS
Daemon is defeding with 2 lings, and a morphing sunken, with more frantic defenses on the way, along with marines from Kas.
This move touched off a scramble. At least 4 or 5 waves hit Daemon, decimating his probe line, stopping an attempt to take his natural, and generally abusing him. Kas sent marines, we sent more Z&Z (zeal and zergling:) Blood littered his creep, zealots went up in blue-white smoke, drone battle zerglings, and at oine point, it was 3 drones vs. two zerglings, with more on the way. A metaphorical trumpet sounded as a herd of marines cuts through my lings like a hot knife through butter. Me and Necro try to take advantage of the line-dancing syndrome (where moving troops will spread out in to a straight, extended line) by hitting Daemon with zeals while my lings wait for the terrans to move out, and hit them in transit. regretably, Kas has firebats and medics, and my zerglings are now as effective as a cast- iron life presever on the Titanic. We decide to cancel the attack, considering we have hurt Daemon seriously.
During the fray I have taken my natural, and am beginning to tech for lair. My choke is defended by hydras, and the speed and range upgrades are being worked on. A token sunken guards my natural's choke along with my hydras. I research burrow and mission zerglings out to pepper the map and resource nodes.
~time passes~
Everything is hunky-dory in the zerg base. I have a few lurkers, 3 queens with ensnare in the works, (yes Queens. I'll explain later), and a large batch of hydras. My expansion is on-line, and a 3rd hatch has been completed in my main. My hydras are 1/0, with 1/1 being worked on. Necro has expanded to his natural, has has a nice horde of protoss ground.
The Charge of the Light Brigade
The zergling in front of the terran base sees a line of purple infantry pass over it. Thus forwarned of the attack, more hydras are mutated, my lurkers are moved in to position in front of the sunken. Then, my zergling is detected, and blown to shreds. Curses, oaths and other such bad words. A science vessel. My lurkers scurry back to the protection of the sunken, and prepare for the onslaught...
And what an onslaught it is. Forget Marvel comics and the X-Men. Kas redefined the meaning of the word. About 20-odd marines with medic support and a few token firebats charge my base. My queens watch impotently, with ensnare seconds away from being done.
Fractal_Wave: help
That sums things up fairly well. Necro brings down a counter-horde of toss troops that attack the wounded terran squad. As I watch in utter awe, Kas shows that he has more tesosterone than me and Necro combined, by pimping the protoss rescue force with minimal losses. I order my sexless droves to run back to my main, where more hydras and another sunken (total: 3) are being prepared.
Slaughter House 6:00
(come on people...prove to me that your educated & tell me where that pun is from)
Chopin's Funeral March is sounding in my head. I message Necro that i'm sorry for letting him down...and he replies with a truly GLORIOUS message.
Necrosausage!!: dt coming
I yet live, if only I can stay alive until the dark templar get here. The hydras line up, and a few zerglings burrow at my choke. Kas's infantry are busy with the hatchery at my natural. But they're not gonna be busy for long.
Kas moves up the ramp, stims up, and kicks ass. My queens ensnare, my zerglings unburrow and hit him from behind, and my hydras blast spikes at the invading terrans. All the while, I'm watching those 3 little blue dots get closer and closer.
The last hydra pops, the last zergling screams in agony as it is ripped apart by gauss fire, the sunkens are...are... I can't think of anything witty to say. What a bitch. The sunkens DIE.
Then, the blue dots hit the terran squad. 1/0 Dark Templar rip through infatry suits like air, piecering internal organs faster than the medics can heal them. Screams of "stat!" echo through the air, as the terran force panics. Then the tell-tale shimmer of comsat reveals the three warriors, but not before newly-hatched hydras seal the fate of Kas's attack.
Man. These guy aren't half bad. Kas has basically leveled the playing feild with one attack. Setting me back to a level with Daemon, who is probably rebuilding quietly up at 12, and removing most of Necro's attack force, although losing his own in the process. Both Necro and Kas have their natural, and I am retaking mine, this time with more lurkers and more hydras. Necro has just shuttled a few probes up to the TL island, as his main is dry. He also begins build carriers, lameting at how gay he is being all the while. After two are made, he sends them over to Kas's natural, along with two lurkers in a overlord to go play Pop-the-SCV (like hopscotch, but not quite)
We can't lose right? WRONG.
Kas-tastrophe
Not willing to rest on his laurels, Kas moves out a second team against Necro, hitting just as necro's carriers hit his natural. In case you didn't know, carriers are slooooow. Necro had no way of getting his two or three blimps back to his main in time. He'll have to defend with what he has there. And apperently it isn't much. I'm sloowly getting my natural back up, and preparing for a cracking / hydra / lurker drop, when Necro echos my earlier sentiments.
NecroSausage!!: help
I air-lift a few token hydras and lings into Necro's main, scurry 4 lurkers in behind his force, broodling a few tanks, ensnare a few marines, and generally be a nuisance. But I just don't have the troop count to make a difference, and 4 lurkers cannot attack their way through over 25 infanty (defend yes. attack, no.)
I finally build up enough force to matter, but by then Necro's main is burning. I elect to aid him in his quest to take Kas with him, as those 3 carriers are doing a number on Kas's natural, and almost in to his main with help from my troops. Then an avalance of white hydras pours into the base, killing my men, and driving Necro back over the cliff.
By the time we were through with him, he was down to 5 marines an a fire bat...deep with in Necro's main, after taking down the Nexus, and most everything else. We ignored them. Better things to do.
Necro had escaped to the TL island, and slowly began to rebuild, while wasting lots of cash on interceptors for his carriers. Only two are left now, and are making a nuisance of themselves at Kas's natural. The game has lost Necro, and almost lost Kas, but Kas is much more alive than Necro. Necro sends a message that chills my heart.
Necrosausage!!: It's up to you for a while
I am petrified. For all the posturing, & posing & deep tactical analysis, I'm really not very good at StarCraft. I don't mind losing 1v1's based on my own lack of skill, but losing a 2v2 and letting a partener down just sucks. To make matters worse, to say my zerg has been suffering to Terran lately would be one hell of an understatement. Everyone and their DOG has been taking me down as terran. And now I have to hold off a thriving zerg and a rebuilding terran until my partener rebuilds.

Kickin' it live
Alright. If I have to win, I have to win, make no bones about it. I reach behind my head and press the "overdrive" button.
I noticed that Daemon's hydras are 2/1 to my 2/0. This is not a healthy thing. I lay down a second evolution chamber and begin work on armor upgrades. At the same time I tech to Hive. All the while my 4 hatcheries are pushing out hydras like their no tomorrow, with a few being morphed in to lurkers. I check my 'queen count', find that they've all be killed and spawn three more. I begin researching 'spawn broodling', then the energy upgrade. Yes, I have fully upgraded my queens. And no, that overdrive button does not give me crack. I do know what I'm doing.
I decided that I don't have enough gas, and expand to the bottom-right island. I've got lots of minerals...far to many in fact. I build another hatch, bring the total to 5 in my main, plus one at my natural.
After this, the game is a blur. I seriously played some of the best StarCraft of my life keeping Daemon and Kas occupied. At any one time I had at least two or three attacks on the way. Hydras were dropped in both bases numerous times, lurkers scurried into peon lines & wreaked havoc left, right and center, adrenalings hit bases at random...generally, it is total, absolute pandemoniacal (is that a word?) chaos. A few highlights stand out...
At the same time Necro's Carriers hit Kas's natural, 12 hydras and 2 lurkers are dropped on his cliff, cracklings hit his natural's choke, and 12 hydras are dropped on the back of Daemon's base...Kas and Daemon hold us off, with the loss of a few random buildings, and some seriously frightened drones at Daemon's main.... .
A burrowed Zergling at Daemon's natural notices a budding hatchery. A few minutes later, three slighty hostile lurkers are dropped, and have a field day until the drones are gone. Two of the lurkers pop back into an Overlord, and leave the other one to play cards until Daemon comes to retake his natural....
Hydras, Hydras and more Hydras! Oh, and did I mention Hydras?...
Slamming 2-pronged after 2-pronged attack into Kas's main, dropping hydras from one side, and charging up the ramp with another set of twelve....
Expanding to the 9:00 natural...
Gazing in awe at the latest strike team Kas has pulled out of some where...
(marine hack, marine hack!) At least 30-some marines, with medic support, rip into my mined-out natural, despite ensnares, hydras and lurkers....until lurker eggs on my ramp keep them from charging up it, and then Necro's reaver drop comes in and keeps hope alive.
Broodling-ing two tanks trying to turbo-newbie 6:00 before Kas' attack. ...
Gibbering with delight as my Defiler Mound finishes.....
Dropping hydras on Daemon's main with Carrier support from Necro...and watching as the drones run over three lurkers I had positioned to interdict any aid from Kas. I think 2 made it through alive. ... ... ...
Watching Necro handle three reaver drops at once. One of which was the one that kept me alive....
COVERING Kas's ramp with Darkswarm, running in cracklings, then hydras, then lurkers...
And the best part of it all?
---->Kas: gg
Wow. This was an amaazing game. Myself and Necro thought we were on top of things, what with the early rush and all, but Kas's terran power cut the both of us down to size. I seriously think that guy could have taken both of us, 2v1. Poor Daemon got doubled & doubled hard early, so he wasn't a factor (although his hydras were always in the wrong place at the wrong time...for us).
Necro, despite being annoyed with himself for having the gay-ness to go carriers, played really quite well. And if you feel he should'nt have lost his main, I invite you to stop 30 + marines, 4 + tanks, 3 + scivessels and assorted other terran stuff when your main attack force (3 carriers) is 3/4 of the way to it's staging point. Don't for get radiation-safe underwear for your templar. Me? I think this was the way Zerg is supposed to be played...always attacking from every single angle at once, never letting up for one second.
Doing that means that the enemy doesn't have time to scout, which let me get 2 naked expansions, and hold them for the rest of the game. Why can't they scout? Because they're trying to stay alive, and survival usually precludes scouting. However, when they can get together a force worthy of an attack, bad things happen. (Kas's last attack on my base was almost fatal. Thanks Necro!!)
Now, I just need to jack my Macro up to a level equal to my "strategical micro". New word there, basically means micro on a level 1-or-2 steps above individual units. Instead of "that hydra should move back", it's "that squad of hydras goes HERE, and these 4 lurkers go HERE, and these scourge hit thos e science vessels, THERE. And then, I win"
You probably don't understand any of that, but that's ok.
Lessons
-More Drones!
-More Hydras!
-After I hit hive, what comes 1st? Guards, Ultras, Cracklings, or Defilers?
-Queens are beautiful. Really.
-i ~really~ need to Macro better...
-Necro, you're not gay just cause you use carriers.
-Necro, I love your reavers.
-Kas = The Man.
-Zerg really must fear the Terran infantry.
-Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade! A zerg really should be out-upgrading a Terran. (in fact, I think that's a key to beating them...)
-Kas & Daemon, you guys need to scout more for nude expansions. Other than that, you were great.
And that is that.
All the best,
Fractal_wave
