This is a description of two quick cheezy games, no pictures and such.

WHINE AND CHEESE, PART I

The Map: The Lost Temple

The Players:

The HydraDropper, your favorite funky Zerg
A Namless Enemy who went Random.

My opponent is a teenager according to his profile, from my home state of Maryland. We agree to a one on one after a brief friendly chat.

I spawn in the 12:00 position and begin making drones. The enemy, who knows I am chosen Zerg, says "no 6ling ok?" during initial worker production. I assure him "I never do." As I always send my scouting overlord to the closest starting point first, I discover the enemy is a Zerg too, my most hated of matchups. And furthermore, he already is morphing a spawning pool inside of a 9 drone count!

Shit, I say, he's going to "6ling" me himself, and immediately begin morphing my own pool. Quick two hatch is now out of the question and I won't be able to keep his lings off my ramp, so I morph a quick creep colony next to my hatchery to cover minerals too. Our overlords are watching inside the heart of each other's bases. I see eggs morphing after his pool is made, and I begin morphing some zerglings to counter the threat, as well as convert my colony to a sunken.

I collect 8 or so zerglings, but he is still making... drones? He goes for a quick extractor and begins forming a lair at the earliest opportunity, and morphs a structure next to his hatchery. But he is making a second hatchery next to his first! The other structure is an evo chamber, not a sunken. He is obviously going for a muta rush, the evo is so he can have a spore colony to ward off MY mutas.

Our overlords continue to sit in each other's base and watch. He has made no combat units, nor any defensive structures but is just ramping his economy and tech, and is about to have a lair. I'm assuming at some point he was going to chase me out of his base with a spore colony or something. I begin morphing a second hatchery at my choke (I have been making some drones and increasing my economy too during this time), and I run all my zerglings into his base and begin slaughtering workers. He sees my zerglings slaughtering his workers and morphs some lings at the last minute, but they lose to my superior numbers. New zerglings finish my few surviving zerglings as they slaughter drones. However, now he only has a few workers. Meanwhile my economy is uninterrupted and more and more zerglings stream into his base from my now two hatcheries which are rallied to his plateau, and they destroy his spawning pool.

"You are 6ling?" he says. I don't reply. My zerglings destroy his lair. He says "Oh you are so skillful." and leaves the game, surrendering.

COMMENTS:

I didn't desire an early rush, but I don't know what "6ling" is anyway, we both had gas and lairs forming and even second hatcheries forming by the time I attacked him. He could see my whole build, I never made a spore or hydra, and I could see his, and he could clearly see that I was making zerglings (which I only did because of HIS early pool), but made no defense either in units or structures in response. What am I SUPPOSED to do, just watch as he busts out mutalisks first and destroys my base? Then say "No 6muta?"

I don't know how to play a game where we just watch each other's builds and don't do anything about it. What defines when "weapons are free?" When the mutas finally pop out and the overlords are killed or run away? When the first spore colony comes out? Any kind of restrictions are ridiculous. I assumed he meant no 4 drone or 6 drone pool, which I didn't do, the game was actually fairly well along before I attacked. I'm only sorry that I didn't think to bring a drone or two and sunken rush the sorry bum too.

I guess I could have not attacked him and just matched his build but went for an early extra expansion or two and put up some defense and then overwhelm him with numbers, but I don't see any point to a game where you refrain from attacking your enemy when you have a clear opportunity(unless it's because you don't think your attack is strong enough to succeed yet). Any comments or anyone disagree with me?

WHINE AND CHEESE PART II:

The Map: The Lost Temple

The Players:

HydraDropper, do you need to ask the race?
Some Chosen Protoss Guy whose name I forget (ProtossGuy, we'll call him)

I made a game and Protossguy joins. His record is something like 112-107, so I figure I'm going to lose big time, even though my won/loss ration is better, he has a lot more experience playing and must be okay to get all those wins. We exchange good lucks and begin.

I spawn 6:00. During my initial worker build, my overlord spots him at 9:00. I see a quick forge before gateway forming and I figure here is a guy who is either paranoid about a zergling rush (which he should be), or is going to cannon up and be one of these carrier lamers. Whatever. My overlord leaves to avoid dying to stray cannon fire. I'm going to do my second hatchery plugs the choke quick lair hydra drop build, which tends to be very good against Protoss, especially weak players. During the phase where my drone is headed to make the second hatchery, it passes his probe on his way into my base, presumably to scout me. But I don't see the probe come in to look at my structures.

GENERAL QUARTERS, GENERAL QUARTERS, WE HAVE A CANNON RUSHER IN THE BASE.

Sure enough the couple of drones I send to find his probe sees it warping not one but TWO pylons. I set two drones on the task of killing the probe, and they do, but the instructions to warp the cannon are already set. Two drones continuously damage the cannon and it is destroyed just before it would ever appear or fire. Then Protossguy immediately leaves the game, but it is just after the two minute mark, giving me the win. He had already committed and lost 400 minerals worth of resources to this failed cheese tactic and has nothing to show for it, while I have more workers AND a second hatchery a an expansion already.

I wonder how many of his 100 plus wins were with a cannon rush. Oh well, if it's fun for him, I guess...

COMMENTS:

Records, especially non ladder, are no indication of ability since they can be all comp stomp games etc. Do not let them deter you from playing someone, especially if you are just playing for fun and not trying to win the ladder or something. Just play and see how you do. You might be surprised.
While ladder ratings can certainly be deceptive because of win trading and ladder abuse, hacks, and other cheats, at least the number tends to give you an idea of what kind of players the player can beat.
Some people LIVE to do stuff like cannon or SCV rush you.
