Map: Lost Civilization
Players: Myself (random to zerg; top right)
and a picked Terran (don't remember the name; bottom right) vs. bump2 and julie9, both picked Protoss.
I was cruising through vanilla SC looking for a non-hunters game when I happened across "2 girls vs. you." Cute, I thought, and entered. The first time we tried it my would-be partner was immediately dropped. The second time, though, the game worked.
Well, sort of.
I always play random under this handle, but Zerg's my worst race. I also didn't know the map, with proved to be a big problem later.
I started off with a 9-pool, going for hard economy. The second 9 drone went into a creep colony, the next into a second hatch, and then finally an OL.
By the time my pool finished, I had three larvae and enough money, so I popped out six lings and sent them off to the upper left to see what I could do.
Almost all the way to the enemy base, my troops met two zealots, defeating them at the cost of all but one of their number. That one quickly perished farther inside the base.
My economy was rolling now, and I started to produce more lings. I also started gas somewhere around here. Then I had a look at my partner. This is most of the reason for writing this report - the guy had meticulously arranged a V of marines in his choke with a tank on either side. What the hell? I have better things to do with my time.
Knowing I was facing zels, I laid down a couple more sunkens. I then took a dozen lings to go visit orange again in the upper left. When I was almost there, I saw a line of orange troops on my mini-map, almost on top of my base. Turns out there were two routes between our bases. Oops.
Somewhere in here I upgraded to lair. What can I say, I had the cash to spare.
My dozen lings did an about-face, and I called up more from my waiting larvae, until I ran into control problems. Oops again. However, my three sunkens were able to hold the zels (I think there were about eight of them) long enough for my army to return, for the new recruits to hatch, and for two more sunkens to mutate.
When the battle was over, I was down to one creep colony and short several drones, but I still had 17 lings. I sent them on a counterattack. It turned out that I had a lot of gas at this point, since I hadn't been spending it, and since the limiting factor on my regrowth was the larvae rate, I decided to tech a little, laying down a queen's nest.
They were busily killing a lone pylon in her choke (I don't know what that was about) when my partner, who had daringly sent two marines outside his base finally, saw a line of yellow troops coming from the lover left, headed for me. Damn. I pulled back again and ran to defend my home.
It was a double attack this time, and I desperately threw down sunkens and built lings. There were maybe 16 zels in the attack. I told my partner to go do something. He had troops, but I guess he just liked looking at them.
My base got hit very hard, and I managed to save some drones only by micromanaging them. The attack was beaten off, but I saw essentially dead.
Yellow had apparently brought a probe along with that attack, and started a cannon post south of my base. She never tried the cannon push, though, only used it as a rally point. I was rebuilding as fast as I could, but it wasn't fast enough. The next force of zels overwhelmed me, and my base fell. I have no idea where the expansions are on that map, so that was it for me. Then my two opponents surprised me by leaving a sunken colony in the corner.
I used my newfound spare time to scout with my two remaining overlords. I was rooting for the girls by this point, since I figured they were cool (meaning good sports), and my ally had been less than helpful.
In the upper left, I found that I really shouldn't have pulled back those 17 lings early on. She only had one cannon in defense, and all her troops must have been gone then. Oh well.
In the lower left, I found a whole lot of cannons.
My partner, meanwhile, had tried expanding to the center area with lots of force. For some reason one of the Protoss then tried to offensive cannon him. Weird. Tanks took care of that.
Then, again showing superior knowledge of the map, they proceeded to run a whole mess of zels and drags around the hard point and into my partner's main base. he didn't have any clue what to do about it, and quickly fell.
The three of us exchanged gg's and compliments, and my last sunken popped.
Lessons learned:
Dammit, I hate incompetent partners. Oh wait, that's a gripe, not a lesson...
Know thy map. This may have lost me the game.
Sometimes it's better to just attack, even if your base is being attacked also. I could have run over her, bringing it down to a 1v1 (in effect).
Don't try to tech too early. I should have gone hydras with my gas, but instead I went for queens. Queens are cool, but wrong counter. Orange, at least, didn't have gas till after I was effectively dead.

"I hate one-dimensional terrans" - me
Sorry, no screen shots this time. I wish I could show you all the formation my ally had put his troops in. It was sooooo sad. |
