Hello all, and welcome to another battle report put up by myself on behalf of sc2gg.com. Working on improving since my last few posts, I will be embedding the youtube commentaries (English only for now) at the end of my report in order to make up for the lack of images. I will start including timestaps of exiting events in brackets [ ] for those who don’t want to follow the whole match in order to see what I am talking about. The time in the bracket will correspond to the timestamp of the beginning of the event the sentence describes.
At this time I probably will not do every single one of the January matches, there’s just too many right now and I would like to focus more on the present games. I will probably only write up the winner match and the final match from S4 in order to give readers (hopefully) the best matches of that round in the tournament. Time permitting, I will go back and finish off the rest of the games for your reading pleasure. As it stands now, I will probably work on an alternating schedule, doing a few of the January matches and a few of the February matches for some variety.
That being said, on to the match!
Match Info: GOMTV MSL S4: Group B Match 1: Bisu (P) < Blue Storm > Jaedong (Z)
Here we have the highly anticipated first match of group B, pitting Bisu’s protoss against Jaedong’s zerg. We begin with Bisu spawning in the 8 position and Jaedong spawning in the 2 position. Both players go for the early expansion; Jaedong goes into the 3 position because of Bisu’s probe harassing him at his natural, and Bisu goes to his own natural expansion. Bisu has put down his Nexus before his Forge, and luckily Jaedong (who laid down his Spawning Pool before his second Hatchery) has not yet made it into Bisu’s base with his overlord, who seems content with flying lazily across the map. Jaedong elects to put up a third Hatchery instead of rushing with lings, which gives Bisu time to get his forge and gateway warping in. Bisu has enough time to get out one dragoon and one zealot before Jaedong brings in some lings to try and harass Bisu’s natural expo, but he is driven out rather quickly [5:26].
Both players have teched very quickly, with Bisu getting his Stargate and a Robotics Facility up very quickly. Jaedong has gone simultaneously for a Spire and Hydralisk Den, and also puts up two more Hatcheries at his position 3 expansion. Bisu gets out his first corsair [6:14] and sends it to harass Jaedong’s overlords. He has also put up a Robotics Support Bay and began warping in a second Stargate by the time the second corsair comes onto the field. Jaedong wastes no time getting scourges out onto the field, but Bisu, backed by Photon Cannons, has little trouble with his micro against them at this point [6:55]. Jaedong has expanded into the 5 position while Bisu fortifies both his resource sites with Photon Cannons to stall any muta harass that Jaedong might bring. Jaedong seems to have put Bisu very much on the defensive, with Bisu uncharacteristically confined to his base for a longer period of time than we’re used to seeing. Once Bisu’s first reaver comes out, Bisu moves to expand into the 6 position. Jaedong attempts to push Bisu out of the expansion, but a pair of reavers with zealot protection fend him off quite easily [8:40].
Jaedong seems to have other plans than a muta rush, pumping out hydralisks and getting the overlord speed upgrade to counter Bisu’s corsair threat. This switch doesn’t seem to bother Bisu, who takes out a handful of overlords, losing only one corsair in the process. Jaedong makes another hydralisk push at Bisu’s position 6 expansion, but Bisu makes mincemeat out of Jaedong’s hydralisks with the pair of reavers sitting in the rear of the base [9:23]. Bisu goes for a drop at Jaedongs natural and position 3 expansions, but Jaedong has brilliantly hotkeyed his drones and burrowed them at the first sign of trouble, taking advantage of Bisu’s lack of observers and only losing a couple drones to the drops [9:38]. Bisu continues dropping reavers at different expansions, doing more damage at some than others. In an unlucky moment for Bisu, his squad of corsairs gets caught by a sizable force of hydralisks and he loses 3 corsairs before he can retreat to safety [10:03]. Bisu, seeing Jaedong has committed to hydralisks instead of mutas, immediately pushes tech toward DTs and observers after he loses the corsairs.
[Second video starts here]
Jaedong has gotten his Defiler Mound up and makes a hydralisk and lurker push down the middle of the map, but is countered by a large force of dragoons backed by high templars, whose psy storms shred Jaedong’s hydralisks. Bisu has also gotten his observers onto the field, with a literal wall of observers going out in front of his counter-attack [0:04]. Unfortunately, we soon see that this attack was just a diversion, and Jaedong takes full use of the short advantage he has gained, sending 7-8 overlords into Bisu’s main for a drop [0:24]. Jaedong takes out two Gateways before Bisu’s forces even begin to counter, and takes out the pylon supplying power to a few more Gateways before he is finally pushed out of the base. Jaedong also takes the opportunity and moves to expand into the 12 position, and seems to have brought himself back into the game. Bisu hurriedly moves to bring his forces to defend his position 9 expansion, but Jaedong doesn’t bite and pulls his forces back to the middle to prepare lurkers for another strike. Bisu’s forces move into the position 12 expansion and take out the drone before the hatchery can go up, then pushes back toward the middle of the map.
Bisu moves into the position 10 expansion while pushing towards Jaedong’s natural expansion. Jaedong brilliantly holds the choke with a single hydralisk mutating it into a lurker and using the egg to block out Bisu’s forces [2:30]. Bisu pushes the middle and makes short work of Jaedong’s forces, but Jaedong manages to get off a plague before his defiler is killed. Jaedong is preparing for a second drop into Jaedong’s main, but he is hit by corsairs as he is flying over the cliffs, losing two overlords full of units before he can get over level ground [3:32]. Jaedong, who has blocked out Bisu’s forces with a lurker egg at the choke, manages to do quite a bit of damage to Bisu’s tech at the natural expansion, but with the base mined out it won’t bother Bisu economically. Pushed out of Bisu’s natural, Jaedong sends another force at Bisu’s position 11 expansion backed up with defilers, who make excellent use of swarm to protect his hydralisks from Bisu’s dragoons [4:36]. Jaedong makes great use of plague, allowing his hyrdalisks to take out half a dozen dragoons before Bisu can get off a psy storm to push him out. He pushes another large force at Bisu’s position 9 expansion, but without any overlord escort he retreats in the face of a couple DTs that have camped at the expansion [5:15]. Bisu’s corsairs have yet another bad day, losing 4 of their fellow pilots as they fly over Jaedong’s retreating attack force. In another unlucky event for Bisu, his dragoon forces get cut off from his main force and cut down by a couple dozen hydralisks [5:43], but he manages to escape with about half of them.
Jaedong makes another move to expand into the position 12 expansion, but a small ground force sent by Bisu makes use of an incredible little micro exercise and destroys the hatchery before it can be cancelled [6:25]. In an attempt to even the mining race, Jaedong makes a lurker drop on the ledge above Bisu’s position 9 expansion [6:38]. Jaedong makes a simultaneous push up into Bisu’s position 11 expansion, and with the destruction of his ground troops and liberal swarms put up by the defilers Bisu loses the Photon Cannons defending the base. But with great psy storm placement and some reinforcements, Bisu manages to defend his expansion with no loss of probes. While this is occurring, Bisu pushes a small group of DTs into Jaedong’s natural expansion, and even with the presence of an overlord manage to take out the hatchery and a few drones before a hydralisk force moves in.
Jaedong, whose lurker is still preventing any mining at Bisu’s position 9 expansion, pushes another massive force of hydralisks (sniping a group of probes) up into the position 11 expansion, and the expansion finally falls [8:06]. At the same time, Jaedong has expanded again into the position 12 expansion and seems to be a lot more secure than when he previously attempted. With the destruction of Bisu’s position 11 expansion, he is left with only one mining position (position 9), while Jaedong has expanded across the map. Bisu attempts to ferry a control group of probes into the position 9 base, but they run headlong into Jaedong’s hydralisks and are taken out in seconds.
With the complete loss of his economy and a massive force of hydralisks sitting in the middle of the map, Bisu ggs and the match is over.
