This is a text only report. While this may make the 0.00000000001 % of internet users still running modems happy, it may or may not annoy the people used to me putting serious bandwith killing images in my reports. Also, this is not an excellent report. If you want to read my reports from the progaming scene - alàs OnGameNet SKY Proleague, check out www.teamliquid.net. I post news there under the alias ToKoreaWithLove.
It's an ordinary saturday, and my gf is reading Harry Potter on the couch behind me. I just helped my mother move to a new house, and thus missed the live SKY league. Nothing funny to do on the net either, my friends are all hungover and i dont have sc here. So I write this text only.
I'm sure you all heard of StarGate. No? Well, it's a ladder with its own server, kinda like GameI. Some swedish guys are hosting it, and it has some good players, a good antihack system and no hassle of msg'ing the silly wgt bot. So I signed up, hoping for some good games. The first game was a horrible smackdown vs some newbie terran who had watched too many replays and had no micro. The two followin, tho...
Game 1 : AngelOfArt(r@5) (Blaze) vs monty(z@2) on SGT Nostalgia 1.2
When the game started, I found myself with a command center and the usual batch of scv's. I sendt them to work as usual, and knowing he had picked zerg went for a pretty straightforward 2 rax fast acad build. I'm no good terran player, but it is fun t play random once in a while.
My scouting scv reported that he went 2 hat in base, with gas and a quick lair. I got the lingy feeling, and as usual my instinct was right; he teched quick to lurkers while defending with many speedlings, preventing me from moving out before I had a solid force with bats. Confident in my micro abilities, I moved out with only 12 marines, 2 medics and a lone firebat. As I left the narrow passage of my ramp, he attacked with about 30 speedlings from two sides, but I had been expecting this, and microed my firebat to great effect, taking down all of the offending lings with one 6 marine casualities. Meanwhile I went factory and a 3rd barrack in my main.
I walked the small reminants of my battle group to his natural thru the backdoor - that narrow entrance from the gas nat. But since my sped is horrible and I was macroing in my base, I lost the better part of it to some lurkers. Still no expand on his part tho, and I expected a quick lurk/ling attack soon. By now I'm pretty much in the driver's seat, getting +1 attack and has siege tanks with another cc building. My instincts was right again, as he attacked my ramp with about 20 lings and ~7-8 lurkers. I held easily with m&m and sieged tanks, but he burrowed in my nat and managed to delay me greatly because I had no science vessel yet.
Still feeling good, I cleared the lurkers from my nat and worked on vessel tech while expanding and adding to my forces. He did a great job at delaying my breakout with more lurkers on my bridges, but when the vessel finnaly came I busted out and established control over the territory outside my bases. I also sent out a dropship for some expansion control, fearing he had delayed me enough to get multiple bases by now. I was right, he had a base running at 12, but no defense present yet. I decided to test his multitasking abilities, and fought two groups of hydras in the middle while at the same time killign his expansion. It worked like a charm, he never noticed and the expansion is dead with every single drone gone.
Feeling comfortable, I added more barracks and went dual ebay grades. He was running off 1 gas, but had somehow afforded 2-2 hydra grades. Not a big deal for me now; I bunkered up my gas natural and pumped 10 rax m&m, touring the map with a large infantry battle group. He got the best of the first group with a beautiful flank, but I had another one ready at home, and despite his best defensive attempts I rolled over his only working expand. I did some matrix marine tricks to draw fire while my marines ran up the ramp he was holding. He tried to make a comeback with a surprise 10 lurker group, but by now I was 3-3 and my 3 groups of marines just plowed thru the lurkers like hot knife in butter. Wih no hope left, he surrendered and asked for a re.
1-0 Blaze -_-;;
Game 2 : Blaze (t@10) vs monty (z@2) on Legacy Of Lee
Legacy of Lee is just like that old Coca-Cola map, Legacy Of Char, except it is Jungle tileset and the maker tried to balance it. Always known as a horrible Z map, but mr. Emperor hiself; Lim-Yo Hwan (aka Boxer) pioneered the cc-rax-rax build here and used it to great effect.
So that was my idea. Did a quick 12 cc build and then two hatches, while scouting his base. He never even tried to harass, and I got everything safely underway, going for 3 rax m&m with tech. The first scan revealed a spire build. Now this is the bad thing, for what should a poor t do? I had marines and medics, but he got his exp for free and has enough gas to power the entire washington region. If I move out, my base is dead despite bunkers and turrets who all suck vs mass muts. If I don't move out, he'll just expand on my ass and I'll be toast later. To make matters worse, my next scan showed a queens nest. Probably guardians, I thought to myself as I started two starports with valks in mind.
It seemed like a good choice, and he never ever tried to harass me. When I had 3 valks, I left them home with the turret forrest, and marched out with my now 4 groups of m&m, hoping to do some expansion control. I was right, in the bottom right corner I found both natural and main taken - but defended by an enormous line of sunkens! Man, must have been 10-12 sunks there, and muta suppost hanging overhead. But I had no real choice, and in a do-or-die manouver I attacked head on with everthing. Wonder of wonder, it worked! His mutas die, and so does the sunkens, and I still have a full group standing brave. But that was all the good news for now - for a scan in his main reveals ultra cavern, and a scouting scv finds another expand at the bottom left main, well defended and in full swing.
I'm in deep shit now, and things can only get worse. In a weird moment of fog, I go 3 fac tanks to counter the ultras, while also pumping vessels from my two startports. I have no problem holding my bases with 3 fac tanks, but I can't move out either. I try to take the island, but he is on to it with mutas, devourers and dropped ultra/ling! He even has everything, including the air, with 2-2 grades. In a desperate move I take a control group of tanks, my vessels and a bunch of scv's and walk down to bottom left. I siege up on high ground while planting turrets like it was spring in the forrest, while also eliminating the expansion there. Takes both bases for myself and prays for a little more time to get running again. But no gods available this time, monty drops a zillion lings in my main while attacking with mutas, ultras and devourers.
He tries to take my new main with the same force, but I have enough tanks and hold with 4 standing. Desperately rebuilding around the ruins of my once-nice defense, but in a display of power overwhelming he just run me in with mass 3-3 cracklings. I have no choice but to surrender.
Afterwards, I thought a bit about the game. You know sometimes you play terran and is pushed into an akward position where you can't go anywhere, but still have to. It feels a lot like being blind in the forrest at night:o If I was back in the last game, I would have gone mad upgrades 10 rax m&m / vessel, who should have handled everything pretty well. Instead I tried to be fancy and ended up with not enough of anything.
GG monty
Stats ended at 1-1, but it was late and we both had to sleep. Hope you liked the short report. |
