"The medic giggles as you show her your Full House. Yes, this game of strip poker is going quite well. 'This time you'll have to take off more than your first aid kit,' you say with a sly wink." - Drefsab

I know I play the map too much, but I'm starting to master it. I'm with my friend Omnipresent_one and I asked him if he wants a pubbie or what. He says he doesnt care, so I annouce the game in nohunters the game title and make it public, to increase the change of people actually coming in. Well, low and behold. A fellow named x'dsBatman and someone else I forgot came in.. and the game commenced.
My position was Zerg in the top left, Omni was terran in top right. The other two were blue protoss bottom left (batman), and red terran bottom right. I did not know the initial races of my adversaries, seeing how they both went random. I had decided to go with a modest and defensive build that would allow my economy to be stronger than normal by saturating my mineral line with drones. I went for a double hatch then extractor and pool. I sent my first Overlord to take a gander at what the other guys are up to, and maybe find out some vital information about their tactics. I sent my second Overlord to my ally, in case he needed air detection.
I had begun making spores and a sunken at the back of my peon line, fearing a reaver or muta harrassment. I went straight for Hydras and an Evolution Chamber to upgrade as soon as possible. I didn't want an early drop, so one Lair was fine enough for me. By this time, my Overlord had reached the bottom-left guy. I saw he had an undefended peon line with more than ample probes mining. I saw he had just started to warp in an assimilator, but I aslo saw a Cyber Core. Fearing a Dragoon attack, I retreated my overlord to safety. I had begun a spire to make mutas to do my scouting for me, and possibly Devourers later to escort by Hydra-drops. I had 1/0 upgrades before I could even drop.
Omni went with his usualy tactics and dropped 4 vultures at the back of the Protoss's base. Unfortunately, by this time it was guarded by 2 canons and he had some goons to help counter any drop. The vultures were quickly dispatched, and Omni commented on how he might have gotten 1 probe. I had my muta up and started patrolling the expansions nearest our opponents. I saw several blue structures warping in on the bottom-middle island expansion. I quickly loaded up my Hydras and dropped 12-16 Hydras on that base. Omni sent along 2 tanks and valks to help against air, we razed the expansion pretty quickly. After that, I decided to grab the expansion to my right. I also knew the terran might expand at this time to the north of his base, so I sent another muta and found him to have several marines, a bunker half-done, and a command center floating down. I sent my remaining Hydras along with some of Omnis units, and together we razed the expansion.
My Hydras were upgraded to 2/0 and I made a queens nest and later a Hive. My expansion was spotted by an observer. Being the paranoid player that I am, I made 3 sunkens to cover all my expansion to help with a drop. I had started air defense upgrades, in case of corsair and valk raids, and had made a third hatchery. Omni expanded on the island on the middle-right. My Hydra force was growing larger and larger. I had several scouts patrolling all expansions to warn my of any expansion attempt. I had decided against taking a risk and dropping someone's main base. I wanted to starve them out to the point of... starvation. I made a Nydus canal connecting my main base to my expansion.
Red had tried to expand again, we left him with a window of time stupidly. We dropped it again, to the same effects as our previous engagement. Blue had also tried to expand again, and my Hydras attacked him and stopped his advances. Omni decided he wanted to invade the terran and get one player out of the way. He had been succesful on attacking and it seems it was only a matter of time untill his siege was complete. My Hydras were at 3/1 now. Most of my army had withered since I used them to stop the enemy from growing. I knew in the back of my head that the Protoss was going to drop me. He couldnt attack me with a large force of Carriers, or have enough money to create any kind of immensley powerful and destructive force, but I knew he would have enough to make me worry. I teched and started researching Queens to get ensnare when, to my prediction, the Protoss landed a large force of units below the creep at my main base. I was precautios and saw an extremely well-rounded force of 6-8 Dragoons, 8-10 Zealots, 4 templar and 2 Reavers. Surely, this would be a bitch to stop. I sent in most of my force to try to kill his most dangerous units first (the templar and reavers). He couldnt outright proceed in my base and destroy everything. I had defensive structures to buy me enough time to bring reinforcements in to help. I sent in the bulk of my Hydras, not all of them. I managed to kill a reaver and a templar and various land troops before that force got killed to storm and the groun units. He proceeded the siege my main base. I knew it wasnt smart to take this force on alone, and I called upon my ally's forces for aid. I had managed to kill the other reaver off while he wasnt looking. He obviously had targeted a sunken and wasnt hitting my Hydras.
Omni dropped a few tanks and had valks to kill the shuttles. Together, we pincered the attack force. I managed to have my force of 50 Hydras reduced to about 20. I saw blue had expanded to the island between us during all this, so I dropped it and razed it along with troops from Omni. The terran knew he couldnt win and left. Omni wanted to nuke and Batman knew his situation was dire (get it? Its a pun, the name of the map is dire, hes in a dire situation...anyway.) Apparently, we had played against him in a previous game, although I couldnt remember. After the nuke fell, we started talks on whether to ally or not. We would get wins since someone left, so I finally conceded and we all allied. We exchanged "ggs" and Batman told us we were bitches about not letting them expand. He meant it as a compliment, and I was flattered. Yet another game was played on the map that takes great musing and thought impetus. Long live Dire Straits.
Lessons Learned:
1. Resource Denial is a wonderful thing. We could have let them expand, we could have attacked their main. But why attempt to end a game prematurely when you could be pushed back and leave yourself open for a counter attack? I planned to build up a large army and drop them all in a wonderful orgy of carnage and pixel blood animation. Allowing your opponent 8 x 1500 mineral patches plus 5000 gas makes the game longer and harder than it should be. I went for the defensive style and it worked pretty good.
2. Cooperation is a must. Coordianated attacks and drops helped us be the victors in many decisive battles. Thanks to my upgraded and numerous Hydras and Omni's tanks and Valks, we put constant pressure on the enemy and made them paranoid on their expansion attempts.
These lessons are universal and have been spoken by other players already, I guess its just a reminder. I hope you find my report accurate and fair. Sorry for no pictures, I didnt plan on making a report. |
