Jade Bronsmoore a lad of sixteen, struggled to his feet as the cold, dry, winter wind bit into his chapped sun-bit face. His mind flashed through, reaching into his inner thoughts, backtracking through the gruesome, torture-filled drama he had undergone the past two days. Ever since his capture, his gnome-bandit captures had pushed him to the very limit of his endurance. Through the vast, overgrown tangle of bush, briars, and bramble; he had been marched. A constant, ruthless struggle to put one foot in front of the other. On and on the cruel gnomes had pushed him. His bare feet were ripped apart like a knife torn through cloth. Multiple calluses, sores, and cuts decorated the surface of his feet. However, there would be no mercy. Twice he had attempted an escape only to be chased down and thrown back in line like an animal. Hurt, hate, and fear clouded the poor lad’s mind. How was he going to get out of this predicament, he asked himself?
It was the morning of the third day of his treacherous march. He had just been rudely jerked awake after a lonely night of tossing and turning trying to get some sleep to help ease his situation. He had managed to dose off a couple of times but not even close to the rest he needed. He had just got up after finishing his poor rations of partly roasted meat. “Let’s go” he could hear Stakes rough, commanding voice say. With that said the gnome band numbering ten strong pushed him ahead to begin the third day’s march. About noon to Jade’s delight, they came up on a small stream that meandered and twisted it’s way through the forest dipping down into a small crevice. The stream offered Jade the drink he needed to soothe his chapped mouth. After each of the gnomes drunk of the water to their heart’s content and filled the leather pouches they carried. They started across the stream.
Nearing the other side a figure came into view. A tall stranger stood a few feet behind the opposite side of the stream. He seemed to be waiting for them. Wrapped around his tall, thin form was a black tunic waving in the wind, covering all but his face. Long black hair with streaks of gray hung out of the robe covering parts of his face. His face dark and stern all the way up to his black lead eyes that seemed to pierce and bore into your very being as he stared. Two thin sword handles were exposed above the back of the tunic just below his head. As they hung out of their hilts, which were strapped, on his back crossing one another diagonally beneath the tunic. A black belt sat around his waste tightly above his black pants. Multiple knives and daggers hung from the belt.
The stranger stood facing the approaching party unmoved a look of calm resolve painted across his face. He ran his gloved hand gently through his hair as if in thought. Where are your headed? He inquired sternly. Stake whom Jade had perceived to be the head of this gnome party from the beginning stepped up to challenge the stranger. What business is it of yours? He demanded coldly. None I suppose, I just find it depressing to see an innocent lad drug and trod around as if he were an animal. Really, well what do you propose to do about it, asked Stake with a short smirk as he waved his hands about his men as if to emphasize the ten to one odds. I will simply ask you nicely to release him and kill all that resist if you refuse, came his answer.
Stake then approached the stranger till he stood directly in front of him. Drawing his sword he thrust it outwards to pierce the stranger’s tunic chest. The stranger was much quicker, however, dancing aside nimbly, he avoided death removing his short sword from its resting-place on his back. The thrust barely traceable by Jade’s naked eye _ the shadowy whiz lodged deeply into Stakes skull killing him instantly.
At once the remaining nine were on the stranger, wickedly curved swords glistening in the sunlight. The stranger deftly evaded every blow with snake like reflexes striking back with deadly precision. Six of the nine fell, blood oozing out of their yellow skin. The remaining three backed up in fear to formulate a new attack strategy.
Seizing this opportunity, Jade turned and ran for a more dense position in the bush where he could hide and watch the battle from a safer distance. Noticing this movement two of the three tore after him to cut off his escape. Jade tripped over a overgrown vine and landed hard as the two scavenging wolves closed in cornering their prey. Then, the stranger was there for him, uncoiling from feet back he released two knives that instantly met their targets. One gnome fell, his face landing in the mud blade hanging from his back. The other fell backwards his spine behind the neck fatally pierced. The remaining gnome fled into the trees in sheer terror.
Jade Bronsmoore had just met the legendary, dark, blade-master, Gerald Rex.
