Final Reckoning - Part I
My legs were suddenly taken out from under me and I hit the ground hard. I looked up and saw my adversary preparing to end it all then and there with a downward strike of his blades. I parried his blow and rolled out of the way, just to see another strike coming at my head. I ducked and rammed my elbow into his torso, but his massive frame took it with barely a flinch. He came down on my backside but I managed to trip him up and put some distance between us so I quickly gathered some energy and in one massive blast managed to knock poor Messarin clear out of the arena and right into the north wall.
"Good game", I said as Messarin slowly came to his feet.
"Bleh, I knew I was no match for you psionically, Pranix, so I tried to give you no time to cut loose. I can't believe you managed to gather up that much energy so quickly."
"You almost had me several times", I said "and besides, I'm absolutely no match for you physically, I'll be recovering from those blows for many cycles".
"As if that close encounter with the wall at high velocity feels good".
"Stop weeping like a Terran".
Our argument was interrupted by the news crystal flaring to life. Rikaran was now in Kerrigan's hands as our last stronghold was mercilessly wiped out. It didn't take psionics to determine that Messarin and I were thinking the same thing, we both wanted to do something about this, and badly! But even as desperate as our forces were (I mean, we even allied with the few remaining terran forces left), our young age and lack of training would stop any Protoss Executor from allowing us to contribute to the cause. We stared at each other for a few minutes when Messarin finally broke the silence.
"If we wait any longer we'll be completely overrun by the Zerg before we're able to fight, I'm going to get trained as a zealot at first light!"
I wanted to go too, I really did, but I spoke differently: "We tried a mere fifteen cycles ago, we were rejected based on our age then and we'll be rejected now, don't waste your time".
"We're down to a mere shadow of our former glory, and have been reduced to working with the inferior Terrans. The Zerg are just getting stronger and stronger and it’s obvious now that our extermination is their only goal. They must accept us now! They must!”, Messarin made no attempt to hide his anger and frustration.
I considered for but a moment and decided that it was worth the chance.
"I'll join you" I said.
-----
"En Taro Adun Pranix!” My comm crystal said to me before the System Star's light became visible on this side of the planet.
"It's too early, Go away", I said, removing the crystal from its power source and returning to my slumber.
In what seemed like only moments I was forcibly yanked from my sleeping chamber, my body reminding me sharply about the injuries I suffered during aforecycle's match.
"Let's go, you obese, immobile Cerebrate! We have a war to fight!!!"
"It can wait for a tenthcycle or two! Besides, they're not going to take us anyway and how did you get in here?" I asked - legitimately curious.
"You didn't think I knew that you keep the access pattern five paces to the east of the entryway?"
I grimaced at my own predictability and started to prepare for the journey that Messarin wasn't going to let me delay.
We arrived at the transport site and waited for the security checks to finish before we were allowed to program our destination, of the nearest Executor's Nexus in. We warped in and started making our way to Executor Piror's Nexus to, once again, offer ourselves for zealot training. The guards, having seen us 15 cycles ago skipped the usual questions and simply informed the Executor's staff of our arrival. We were told that it would be more than half a cycle before we could see him.
"This is what you interrupted my sleep period for! We now have half a cycle to do nothing but watch the construction of probes as if we've never seen them before!" I demanded.
"It never hurts to show just how zealous we are, and if we're accepted, they by the glory of Aiur, it will be worth it!” Messarin insisted.
"Very well! But you will suffer retribution for my loss of sleep this cycle".
We sat in silence until the executor's previous appointment - a Templar - left his presence, stared at us for a few moments, and we were finally allowed in.
That stare was haunting me as I entered the Executor's work chamber. I had never seen a Templar up close, after all, on top of needing enormous psionic potential, the discipline and dedication needed to control that much energy made full fledged Templar the rarest of us. Psionic energy and power radiated from him as if his body was nothing but a shell for intelligent psionic energy and I was overawed. As we stood in front of the Executor I couldn't help but be unimpressed by comparison to what I was just witness to. He recognized us immediately and spoke. "If the rest of our youth had your resolve, the Zerg would quickly regret the day they encroached our territory, and the Terran forces would bow before our obvious superiority. As it stands we still do not take warriors younger than fifty and our situation is desperate, Please don't come back until you are of proper age."
It was clearly a dismissal - a dismissal without us getting a word in, and we were left stunned. We found ourselves outside, not quite knowing how we got there and didn't say a word to each other as we made our way to the transport site. As we were leaving I caught a glimpse of the Templar seen earlier re-entering the Executor's Nexus. We also saw the warriors stationed at the base move at a frenzied pace as a Zerg Overlord was spotted moving over the Horizon.
