Just trying something new, by no means will I not finish the SC ff.
Padius was just a peasant, he had no care in the world. It has been years since he last took up arms in the fight for humanity. Today he is but a simple miner at the nearby gold mine. He had no family as they were all lost in the last Great War, and had not yet found the right women. Mining was a grueling task that kept him busy, and his mind off of the haunting images of war. He was still haunted by the smell of rotting carcasses, which could burn your nostrils and images of battered comrades strewn across the battlefield. Parts of them never to be reunited with the body.
Padius gave up that life, and worked as a simple man. He had no need to see those things anymore. At the age of 30, he was ready to settle down and live his life in this small budding town. Years ago when he was young he was eager and willing to give his life for the greater good, but now, that seems like an eternity ago. He knew he would never be called upon for service again, after all, the great paladin Morlune the Mighty and some of the best footman the Human race had ever seen protected this town.
He heard the dinner bell ring from the Town Hall and was happy that it was time for dinner and some R&R. He walked out of the mine with the 2 dozen or so other men that had been mining the precious stone with him. The thing he missed most during battle was being able to look up and see the sunrise and sunset without the skies being streaked with the smokes of burning villages. The sun had turned a bright red orange, and was just dim enough not to hurt his eyes. He watched the sun the how it had illuminated the sky into a heavenly fall color scheme. The clouds white was colored as the whole sky danced with orange and red.
Padius sighed, watching the sunset and rise everyday brought him a calm that not even the end of war had been able to treat him. Along with his mining companions, he walked the road towards the town hall. It was such a beautiful day he thought as he walked. About halfway there he could smell the roast pig that was surely slowly roasting over the fire pit. He could smell the fresh baked rolls that were filling the air with such sweet aroma. He could almost taste the wondrous gravy that undertone the rest of the feast.
The entered the Hall and were greeted by a blast of aroma. Roasted pigs, gravy, biscuits, wine, you name it, and it was there. They started eating oblivious to everything except their hunger from a hard day’s work. Padius was different; he usually looked around first before settling himself into a position. It was something that had carried over from the days of war. Something was different today, he just couldn’t find out what it was. Ahhh, there it was, Morlune wasn’t at the head table today. That wasn’t such a big thing, he was probably just fighting some rebel raiders. He settled in and started to eat, the women really outdid themselves today. The food was excellent.
BONG! BONG! BONG! The call to arms sound rang out. What??! He thought. A call to arms call usually occurs when the main force is nearly annihilated and peasants had to go fight to buy some time for reinforcement. Nothing like a veteran, he lumbers out of the bench and slowly head for the armory to grab some armor and his trusty axe. He had no idea what was going on but in a few minutes he was going to find out. After donning his armor and picking up his axe, he sat waiting for the rest of his comrades to get ready. After all these years I’m going to do battle. Oh boy. He thought and then sighed.
The resident footman that was on watch gathered the men and marched them outside. In the distant, Padius could hear the quickly approaching sound of battle. He thought that it had been a routine battle to take care of some rebel raiders, but the sound of Orc battle drums made him recall years ago his own battles with the Orcs. He could still remember the stench, and the battle crazed eyes of the Orcs. They were relentless and attacked with huge axes dripping with blood.
“Lets go men, on the double!” The footman ordered.
Off they ran, toward the eminent sound of battle. Now the miners were in pretty good shape even after a hard day’s work. The reached the battle in little to no time and what they saw shocked them. Almost 2/3 of the army had been killed. Morlune was being pushed back along with the rest of his men. A group of 20 grunts and 10 headhunters had ambushed the Human force of 20 footman and were driving them back. With the addition of the 2 dozen militiamen, he knew that the Orcs would be defeated. He and the rest of the men ran into the fray of the blood-strewn battlefield.
With the addition of the militiamen, Morlune finally had time to take a rest and recollect himself. He sighed and rested for but a second. He started chanting and was surrounded by an aura, this aura started surrounding everyone around him. Everyone felt revived and fought with a renewed fervor. The people in the aura noticed that the attacks were not as fierce as they were before. Their armor could take a more direct hit. Morlune was just getting started, he had more tricks up his sleeve. He started chanting again, and a bright light shown upon the ground. Fallen footmen got up dazed but completely healed. It took but a second for them to realize they had been resurrected and the rejoined the battle.
Padius was on the front line just like he used to be in the last war. He shielded an axe chop from a towering grunt just as another was swinging at him from behind. A good friend from the mine stepped in to shield the swing. Padius returned his attention to the grunt in front of him. He swung his axe in an arc at the grunt, which was blocked, then followed up with a shield charge. He knocked the grunt down to the ground and as his axe tore through the skull of the grunt destroying the soft tissue of brains protected by it, he heard a scream from behind. He turned to see his friend speared through the chest as the headhunter grunted his approval. He started toward his friend as he watched the headhunter slowly drew the spear from his friend’s chest. Dripping with blood he turned towards Padius in search for another easy kill.
Screaming an old war cry, Padius picked up a fallen militia’s axe and threw it at the headhunter. He followed up with his own axe with a steel look of hatred burning in his eyes. The headhunter saw the first and blocked it easy, but the first axe had hidden the view of the second, and he realized this too late. The axe found its target and buried itself into the chest of the headhunter.
Padius picked up his axe and ran towards his fallen friend. He looked into his friend’s eyes in hopes that he was still alive. He looked into the glazed eyes and into the abyss, he knew that his friend was no more. Noooooo!!! He though mentally. He had never lost his temper when he was young. During the war he found an inner peace that distanced him from the killing he committed. This kept him sane and from growing attachments to anyone of his comrades. He lost his temper now, he yelled and screamed curses as he got up. He turned towards the failing Orc line and ran straight at it.
“Padius!!!!” Someone screamed from behind.
He turned just in time to see a flying spear landing straight through his chest. He had run past the line of scrimmage and into the Orc line. He felt the cold steel pierce through his chest and the gritty feel of the shaft leaving internal splinters. He cursed as he felled to the ground gasping his last breath. I couldn’t have died in the war a hero, I had to die on some unknown land to a rebel Orc raiding party! He screamed mentally as his last breath left his lungs.
