Can you fell it? well, can ya? It's the start of something beautiful... Howdy ho brothers! This is the beginning of a new series of mine. Here, you will se PvZ games of both me, and professionals (me). I will try to get to the bottom of the PvZ matchup. The most balanced and fun, in my opinion. I will include somewhat gosu tactics, and thoughts on the matchup. I'm not sure about the length of this series, but it will be atleast 3. Each game will feature some important feature relating to the PvZ matchup. If you dont give a shit about my tactical lectures, feel free to e-mail this: mail And by the way, I have taken the liberty to steal WilliamWC3's gosu background idea. Hope I dont screw it up =P.
Warning: more cheesy paint shop pro pics incoming! Evasion maneuvers begun! (back button)

Welcome to game one, the very first installment of the series takes place on Lost Temple. ZerG~LinG sits aimlessly around in his home channel, randomly bitching and claiming to be dnk-1's best modem user (and only). Suddenly his mind is torn away from these crazy thoughts...The infamous "1v1 Anyone" is spammed in the channel. A guy named Weibel (A.K.A D-Fens) is apperantly looking for a game. O K, the small word was typed by ZerG~LinG's way to big fingers. the game is made and were underway!

This matchup (ZvP) is so pathetically easy -FennecTheFox (gosu z user)

The lost temple, an interesting, innovative new map.-Someguy June 1956 Lost Temple's the name, Protoss on Zerg, is the game. ZerG~LinG started at the bottom 6 position with his randomly chosen orange protoss. Weibel spawned a slimey, red hatch at 12. He chose his race, giving ZerG~LinG a slight advantage. ZerG~LinG goes for the 8 pylon, the gate at 12 and 13, going for a somewhat rushy build. This is probably one of the only sensible builds versus a zerg. If you dont want lings running wild in your base. Which you dont.

The opening moves, crucial for the rest of the game. ( He should have gone 4pool) Weibel scouts early with a drone, eliminating the random factor. As he finds the toss base, he choses a 11 pool as his opening move. This build opens up for alot of possibilities. A muta rush, or a realative fast ling rush. Weibel dont build gas and saves his larva at 14 control. As the pool finishes he has 450 minerals, and starts a hatch and 6 lings. ZerG~LinG had scouted this build with a probe, and decided not to rush. Had Weibel made a fast expand, the zealot/probe combo would probably own it. Weibels first 8 lings head out incase ZerG~LinG had made a tech. But as the lings arrive, 4 zealots greet them. Weibel wisely retreats, but leaves a ling for attack warning.

As the early game draws to an end, each players much now chose his future builds. Toss has a few good choices here. ZerG~LinG could do the sair rush, with Weibel having no gas. A sair rush can really win the game IMO. Combined with a zeal containment / attack, it makes a dangerous threat. ZerG~LinG's other option would be a reaver attack. If you have good micro a one reaver/two zeal combo can kill numerous units. And of course there's the templar tech, possibly combined with sairs. (DT/SAIR) ZerG~LinG goes for the templar choice.
As for zerg, there's not that many choices. A mass lings will probably NOT cut it. Archons and sair own that. (even scouts does) The hydra tech is probably the most popular and safe choice. The lurker rush is dangerous if toss can spot it, but if it goes unseen...GG. Muta tech is the last option, but at the moment, Weibel have just begun his gas harvesting. He therefore first expands to his natural (i have never seen a zerg win a game without expos) and then spawns a hydra den.

Oh my god lings rule! *crackbatteries not included* ZerG~LinG has to take initiative, to prevent Weibel to expand all over the place. He takes his ~10 Zealots and move them towards the zerg base, in the meantime the zeal speed is researching and a templar archives is being warped in. Weibels sees this attack with a scouting ling, and is about as ready as you can get for 10 zeals. He recently build 3 sunkens around his expansion hatch, and has about 30 lings. ZerG~LinG charges in, lining the zealots up and preventing surronding. The lings engage, and ZerG~LinG moves his units up the ramp. He holds ground there, forcing 1on1 ling-zealot encounters, with the obvious result: The lings, coming from both the zerg natural and main, gets owned. After a pretty bloody battle, the zealots still stands on the ramp. But as he moves further into the main of Weibel, lings had been waiting and they quickly surround the warriors from aiur.

Question: How does a korean say hello? Answer: "Entaro Adun!

The player purchase new...ehhh...stuff!ZerG~LinG has the initiative now, Weibel lost a whole lot of lings, crippling his offensive capabilities. ZerG~LinG feels save enough to expand at his natural, with 2 cannons for detection. This equals the income. The first rule for zerg players in mid-game is to always have a superior economy, this applies to the ZvT matchup too. This has something to do with cost-effectiveness. For example, units like templars and tanks can take out several units, without taking any damage at all. A couple of storms can tear a hydra army apart, which is where you need the extra income to build it up fast.
As you can see in the pic, Weibel has his hydra tech finished, with speed and range soon to be reseached. Also noticable is Weibels three evo chambers. Upgrades are crucial for both sides, a zealot with 1+ kills a ling in only two slices.

WTF IS THAT BIG GREEN TANK!?!? oh, just my cursor, move along, nuthin to see here... ZerG~LinG had one massive army at this time, 12 zealots, a few templars, an all mighty archon and the odd DT. Can you see the big red dot in Weibel's mineral only? its not a exp, but a small force of hydra/lings. He plans to use one of the best zerg strats ever. The encirclement. As the toss forces move forward, zerglings and hydra engage them. Zealots go in front, chopping up the charging lings, while the templar suddenly release a storm above the hydra. Weibel dances like a whore on drugs, but loses his last standing hydra to another storm. The toss froce moves on, now taking on the expansion. Suddenly Weibel uses his hidden surprise, he moves in from the back and kills two templars, one manages to let go of a deciding storm before dying, killing several units. While the zealots slice away on the "defenceless" sunkens, 5 newly spawned hydralisk moves down from the zerg main, a storm is released right on top of them, Weibel tries to dance them away, but his hydras get cluthed up on the ramp and dies a miserable death. Only a few feet away, the sunkens have taken their toll, leaving only a few heavily damaged soldiers, along with a morphing archon. ZerG~LinG targets the expansion hatchery, ignoring the attacking drones. As the hatch is down to 200hp, a few lings and hydra come down from the main, they kill the morphing archon, then quickly dispose off the reamining zealots, saving the hatchery.
Hello modem users, right now you are probably staring at a blank picture, with small alt-text ruining your eyes. Aren't 56k great?

The end is nigh...What, no more icecream? no. damn.

It looks like Weibel is in trouble. It's very important to tech as a zerg when the toss uses templars. Any resonable players can press on the "psi storm" button and kill a ton of crap. There is two ways to go when you see storm, the first is lurkers. Lurkers became a lot more popular with the release of 1.08. I bet that a whole lot of toss users cursed as storm damage was decreased. It may not have the big difference versus all other units, but lurkers can no longer be killed by one storm. This makes a toss without observers very fragile. You dont want to lose two storms on one lurker. The second tech possibility could be ultralisk, or even crazier, queens. Weibel is hard pressed on cash, and simply cant afford the ultra tech. Queens are probably the gayest tech route available. Ensnare may work, but templars still own. Broodling is way too mana expensive, i think it should cost 75 or 100.

While Weibel is nursing his wounds, ZerG~LinG expands to his mineral only. He has 10 gateways running, and 1-0-0 upgrades *cough*. Weibel is now teching to lurkers and drop, using some of his extra gas from the happy ling/hydra days. *Ahh the memories*. Noticable is his 2-2-2 upgrades.

lurkers is good manner diggers, they dig far down, building huge underground cities. or maybe not.. ZerG~LinG makes the next move, moving his newly built army of 12 zealots, 4 templars, and two archons, to the middle. Weibel is not your average sucker though, and have overlords placed above the temple walls, making them cleverly "invisible" to mere ground troops. The zerg forces are put in position, quite a few hydra and lings at the mineral only, and the new surprise: around 5 lurkers and 12 hydra in the entrace to the zerg base. The toss charge, but without any observers, they retreat back a few steps to the middle, hydra follows and duke it out with the zealots until the lurkers catches up with them. They burrow a little in front of the hydras, once again forcing the toss forces to retreat. The small force at the mineral only charge, and for a minute the lurkers are able to catch up and kill several units. The toss force is on a hot fighting retreat, but are retreating into the mineral only, with no way out. Once again Weibel charge with the hydras, forcing ZerG~LinG to engage, allowing the lurkers to move forward and push ZerG~LinG further back. At this point, ZerG~LinG's forces are standing next to the minerals of the mineral only, and is running out of places to go. Is that sweat i see on that zealot? Acid and psines attack again, the toss forces has no way to run... Suddenly, a small robotic observer comes to the rescue. The protoss, now fighting with renewed hope attacks the lurkers, killing 4 of them. But at that point all that remains of the once glorious army. is two templars and a zealots. The templars is without any mana, but with several zerg scalps in their pockets. (does templars have pockets?) ZerG~LinG retreats these brave warriors, but is intecepted by a few equallybrave lings, and lose them.

Bwahahahah! The end wasn't all that nigh after all! Does that mean we get icecream?no.

concentrated mining! As the blue smoke from the dead zealots cleared, the new situation became clear. Weibel expanded at the mineral only(3'clock) just a few moment after the battle, and with his "special" mining style, he begins to use it. The game is suddenly open again, with ZerG~LinG forgetting his macro during the attack, and Weibel using his few hatches to the fullest. This doesn't change the fact that the players are equal in income, never good for a zerg player. Back at the toss base, ZerG~LinG is now switching to mass goons. A resonable counter to lurkers. If a player can space out his goons, the lurkers become useless. Zealots on the other hand run mindless into the spines, several of them being damaged by just one lurker attack.

ZerG~LinG might not have good macro, but he does have 12 running gates at the moment, producing far more than Weibel's 5 hatches. The result of that is obvious; in a few minutes ZerG~LinG built up a huge goon army with one archon and several templars. ZerG~LinG sends a scouting dt first, revealing the "hidden" expansion at the mineral only(3) As he spots this, he sends his units out for a run. The goon/templar force takes up position in the middle, before storming the mineral only(3) Of course Weibel (aka gosu ovie user) spots the attack, and tries to flank the protoss forces with hydras, but once again the attack only proves the effectiveness of storm. The air crackles and blue lightning fills the sky, hydras fall but lings reach the goons, proving the zergling>goon factor, the goons are just too slow to deal with masses of lings. A carefully placed storm kills a whole lot of lings, and even manages to kill a goon. The expansion hatch is completely destroyed, with only purple "shit" left for historians. I'm so fast i can see my rectum -Casper...
A overlord nears the expansion cliff of ZerG~LinG, its purpose is clear...The overlord (being horribly overweight already) wishes to lose weight. And so it does... *plop* two lurkers pop out, burrowing nicely seperated above the peon line. Blue smoke rises from the oblivarated probes, the lurkers cheer (?) But it is too early for that. In the other end of the map, ZerG~LinG still controls a huge force, remaining from the last attack. It is now reinforced by 12 speedy z's, giving the army some much needed melee support. The attack is begun, with a death defying roar the protoss run towards the zerg. On the other side, a 6 foot tall hydralisk narrows its eye, as to aim better, *FLOOOSHH* (???) acid missiles fly through the air, hitting a zealot, dust raise from the ground, for a minute there's silence. The dust clears and the hydralisk wants to check out its kill, a strange blue face appears right in front of it, psi blade in hand. A quick slice and the hydralisk has its lower body thorn off, the zealots cries "My life for aiur!" And jumps onto the upper hydralisk body, ripping pieces of the slimy body off. The hydralisk give out a cry of pain, just before its head gets split in two by the zealots blade. The protoss warrior, job done and with green blood in face, looks up and around him, his fellow fighters stand around him, no zerg anywhere to be seen...
"Weibel has left the game" Can you feel it? well can ya? It's the end of something beatiful

Thoughts On The Game

Weibel should have been way more offensive, ZerG~LinG wasn't under pressure at all
Zerg need economical advantage to win
Weibel should have teched earlier, you can't win vs. toss with only lings and hydra
PvZ proves again to be the funniest matchup ever
Storm owns. Period.
Lurkers can be mean vs. toss

Author's Note:

Phew!, it finally done! I have to say that this report took quite some time, longer than any of my other reports. I personally think that this is my best report ever, plz rate/comment so i may love/hate you. And also give your opinion on my ending, i did it in kind of a fan fiction way as you may have noticed *cough*. Anyway, if i get good response i will do more BR's in this series.
I would like to thank Mark4 and WilliamWC3, those two guys being my greatest inspirations.

Thanks for your time -ZerG~LinG
