We stood back to back, our sweat dripping from our imprisoned bodies. The suits were suprisingly light for the protection they provided, but it was still a prison nonetheless;a prison with one bar:this desolate wasteland. Back to back we were, the position that most likely insured survival, in a percentage that is, and our best hopes were that we could get a few extra shots off on the demonic hopping beasts
that would inevitably overwhelm our relatively pathetic ranks. They bore no name in our knowledge, only hellspawn. Hellspawn that were ressurected as soon dead;
sometimes it seemed to me that as one of them exploded in a mockery of blood and guts, another would form;pop up, from behind the front lines. And they were relentless, After awhile they seemed no longer a mass of alien creatures, but a ravenous wave of stinging fury, or non seeing eyes and souless screeching. Out of all the other creatures I have set eyes upon in combat, or under survelance in some cage tended by fearful scientists, (whose curiosty was drained as their nerve also did)these were the best representation of the blind evil and choatic rage of the race we have been told are the "zerg"
But that's all they would let us know after all we are mere infantry, doomed to death or insanity by grim commanders who spout off about nobility with a passion in their cultivated eyes. What the fuck do they know about nobility? Getting disemboweled by a swarm of nightmares, knowing that you just serve as glorified cannon fodder;what's noble about that? But they bite, most are just resocialized sheep, being led to slaughter with a command in their hearts and a confused fervour in their expressions. I however, am one of those 5% who gave his spirit for his race. And became a sheep that was once a intelligent man in society. Iam nothing now, hardly distinguishable from the rest. I remember my wife though, that much I do. But my dreams of her sink into nightmares, she is replaced with those blank eyes, hundreds of them.
Still back to back, I hear rumblings in the distance, the ground tremors, theirs no other warning sound y'know, they only start screaming when they're right on top of you;their screams only come to join yours in a symphony of horror. I finger the switch to my juice, known as "stimulant". Of course that's all they tell us though, a generic name for a drug of such a disgusting effect. It steals the life from you to provide the adrenaline you need to endure the pain, and fire those nexts few blasts. It's said that a few doses of it will cause permanent insanity, only I know the outcome is much much worse. I was in combat once, and one of the other sheep became a bit too overzealous and fed himself a bit too much juice;He rushed towards the swarm, actually almost right through the swarm of hellspawn laughing perpetually, firing his gun in random directions, they tore into him viciously, but he did not scream, he kept on laughing;a laugh that would make the boldest soilder groan;it was a laugh like nothing ever heard, a laugh that rivaled the screeching of the demons, a laugh that still echoes in my mind, it was indescribable. All the while
being rended apart in a sea of claws. And this was meant to enhance our abilities in combat they said.
Over the horizon they're coming now, the tides of battle were near, and so the sheep were herded. There was no battle cry for earth, or the colony, or even the human race, Just silence until the first burst erupted. As I saw the numbers flow over the front lines I knew then that there was no choice in the matter; I ordered an activation of the packs as I pumped the poison adrenaline into my system. Instantly A heat filled my body, a haze covered my mind. I endured much ripping and scratching(even though my suit was not totally broken through I could've still felt the pain)and I had no fear or 2nd thoughts. Our shouts were drowned in a roar of gunfire and squealing;But I seemed to hear nothing, A serene calmness came over me as I my physical being was taken over by instinct. Then something strange happened, I had illusions of a strange world, only it seemed real. I walked through this like one walks through a dream(floating) and I came upon a temple.
A figure stood hovering over the entrance to the temple with his head bowed as if
in mourning. As I came nearer, he turned:he had a grey skin, and a scaly complexion, two big globes of eyes gazed at me, seemingly forlorn. There was a certain compassion in them I could not understand when-suddenly I was looking in the beady fear filled eyes of a fellow sheep. "We got em.." he said to me almost looking for assurance; "it's over now" If only he knew how wrong he was.
I sat for a long time that day, in contemptplation over the drug induced dream I had during the battle. While Licking my wounds and waiting for the next farmers bell to the fight. I would come on call, for I was a sheep.
