Its time for another “What’s that Tileset?” Battle Report. Today’s epic will take you to Molten Playground. While the name gives it away, the tileset is Ash for the drunk, high, both, or just plain stupid people out there.
~Fenix~(SR), who I happen to be, teams up today with his bud Nitro(SR) in an attempt to overwhelm (and more importantly, outcheese) the duo of Stu and Sirgeno.
Molten Playground is four players, 96x96, with eight expansions. Four naturals, and four mineral-only expansions on islands in each of the four corners. Starting points are roughly at 2, 5, 7, and 11 o’clock. Natural is before your choke (i.e., your Scout Probe sees your natural before it sees your choke point).
Pleasantly surprised that someone had joined our Non-Hunters, Non-Temple, Non-Money up the ass until your colon bursts game, Nitro and I, as Team Cheese, set out to demolish the Team Overlord of Stu and Sirgeno.
TEAMS:
Team Cheese: ~Fenix~(SR), Blue Protoss at 2; Nitro(SR), Brown Protoss at 11.
Team Overlord: Stu, Yellow Zerg at 7; Sirgeno, Teal Zerg at 5.
OPENING BUILDS:
Fenix: 7 Pylon, 9 Gate, 10 Pylon, 11 Gas, 13 Cyber Core, 14 Zealot, 15 Zealot, 17 Gate, 19 Forge, going Dragoons / Zealots.
Nitro: 7 Pylon, 8 Gate, 9 Pylon, 11 Gas, 12 Cyber Core, 14 Zealot, going… Dragoons / Zealots.
Stu: 9 Hatch, 9 Overlord, 11 Hatch at natural, 12 Pool, 14 Gas, 15 OL, 16 Sunken at natural, 17 Sunken at natural, massing Zerglings.
Sirgeno: 8 Pool, 9 Overlord, 11 Hatch, 14 Sunken, 15 Sunken, 16 Sunken, 17 Gas, 18 Lair, 18 Overlord, 20 Hydralisk Den, massing Hydralisks.
The first battle came as Nitro plopped down a Pylon and 3 Cannons at Stu’s choke. 12 Zerglings streamed out… onto the Psi Blades of 5 waiting Zealots. The containment would hold… for now.
Fenix had been slowly massing Zealots, Dragoons, High Templar, and Dark Templar, putting money into upgrades. His 1-0-1 army joined Nitro’s in the middle, behind the 3 Cannons.
Nitro, Fenix, and Sirgeno expanded to their naturals. Stu had a large 1-1 Hydra / 1-1 Zergling force, and with Sirgeno’s 0-1 Hydralisks, they attacked the middle from both sides.
Psionic Storms went off. Dragoons and Hydralisks collapsed into piles of blood and gore. In the end, only one yellow Hydralisk and six teal Hydralisks remained, and they quickly retreated back to their naturals. Mounds of dead Protoss and Zerg lay in the middle.
Stu expanded to the bottom left island, Fenix to the top right island, Nitro top left island, and Sirgeno bottom right island, in that order. It was set. North, vs. South. Would the technology of the Protoss overcome the ferociousness and natural fighting ability of the Zerg?
Nitro and Stu rebuilt quickly, while Sirgeno and Fenix put money into upgrades, and therefore rebuilt slowly. Nitro and Stu squared off at Nitro’s choke, with 20 Dragoons and 4 High Templar facing 60 mixed Hydra/Zergling.
After the last Storm crackled out of existence, 8 Hydralisks remained. They razed Nitro’s natural before being killed by Fenix’s 2-1-2 Protoss Ground, which settled down in the middle.
Joined by Nitro’s newly buily2-1-1 Protoss Ground force, this was the most formidable Protoss army that had been assembled so far. If Team Overlord couldn’t break through, the game belonged to Team Cheese. They didn’t have enough units for a direct assault, so Sirgeno pulled off a brilliant move.
One by one, Hydralisks and Zerglings sneaked past the Protoss along a wall of dried lava. Just out of Dragoon sight range, they were attacking Fenix’s natural before he knew what was going on. As he pulled back and wiped out the invaders, although not before he lost his natural and two Gateways, Stu forced Nitro back to his choke.
This was the end for Team Cheese, but they held out a little longer. Fenix needed gas, and rebuilt his natural. The Zerg retreated to their mains, and the Protoss occupied the middle again, ready for one last fateful assault.
Over 200 3-3 Hydralisks and 3-2 Zerglings met about 100 3-2-3 (Fenix) and 3-1-2 (Nitro) Protoss in the middle. Storms were cast. Hydras danced. Zerglings and Zealots died.
Nitro, showing good multi-tasking and macro, dropped off 4 Reavers at Stu’s island expo. Although they were needed at the front, the Reavers razed the expo, knocking Stu out of the game with no resources and no minerals to mine. But, it was too little, too late.
The battle in the middle was reaching its climax. The few Protoss left dug in, waiting for the Zerg onslaught. The last Psi Storm went off. The Protoss raised their heads. 3 High Templar and 2 Zealots were left alone in the middle of the carnage. Had Team Cheese outlasted Team Overlord?
Nope. GG all. Stu’s Lurkers, hoarded against sometimes desperate need, massacred the Protoss troops in the middle. Moving onto Fenix’s main, they razed the defenseless buildings with help from Sirgeno’s Mutalisks and Zerglings.
Nitro held out a bit longer with Dragoons, Reavers and a lone High Templar, but 8 Guardians and 60 Zerglings ran into his base. Team Cheese said gg, and left.
TEAM OVERLORD: VICTORIOUS
Scores:
Sirgeno: 197,212
Fenix:189,379
Stu: 185,209
Nitro: 131,955
Thoughts: Early Reavers would have raped Stu and Sirgeno, but that didn’t happen, as my mind was focused on cheese. Nitro and I were content to sit in the middle, and got sucked into the numbers game, which the Protoss almost never win.
Remember, kids, “What tileset is that?” Is a question we should always ask ourselves.
