Sorry, no pics (damn school! Damn it all to hell!). Maybe next time.

This is the tale of an FFA on everyone's "What tileset is that?" Map, Rivalry.

We all know Rivalry's wonderful four corners, high ground mains... and nothing else. What a surprise.

Let's meet the players:

Sephiroth(SK): His Protoss is very good, he makes the transition from micro to macro without hesitation, and he does it at least three hundred times a game. Unknown in gaming cirlces.

[Newblar]: Unknown, was hanging around channel we were in when I asked for a game.

~Fenix~(SR): That's me. Don't expect a GG from this man, because although his record is decent, we know how much that is worth. Zippo. Unknown as well.

The Game:

Sephiroth picks Protoss and lands a Blue Nexus and four happy lil Probes at top left. finds himself with a pile of something oozing and Yellow at bottom left. ~Fenix~(SR) finds himself with a shiny Teal Command Center at bottom right.

Opening Builds:

Fenix: 8 Depot, 10 Rax, 11 Gas, 12 Depot, 14 E-Bay, 16 Factory, 18 Depot, 21 Factory, 22 Armory, going Goliaths and Tanks with the block at ramp.

Sephiroth: 7 Pylon, 8 Gate, 9 Gate, 10 Gas, 11 Pylon, 13 Cyber Core, heading for Zealots, Dragoons and High Templar.

Newblar: 8 Hatch, 9 Overlord, 12 Pool, 13 Gas, 15 Hatch at ramp, 17 Evolution Chamber.

Sephiroth scouted top right, and expanded there quickly, while massing Zealots and an occasional Dragoon at his ramp. He sent five Zealots to protect his expo, while putting down two Forge and a Citadel of Adun.

Newblar was massing Zerglings at his ramp, and expoed to his natural. Two ominous Sunken Colonies where placed at the ramp while the fledgling Hatchery morphed in.

Fenix expoed to his natural was well, and blocked the three ramps leading in with Barracks, an E-bay, and a few Depots. He had just scouted Sephiroth's expansion and was headed there with 6 Goliaths and 2 Tanks.

Oh, the imperfection of man:

Fenix's squad of Goliaths and Tanks met the 5 Zealots at the ramp. 2 Zealots fell, as well as 1 Goliath, but then Sephiroth's two cannons warped in at the ramp. Fenix didn't notice in time, as he was razing Newblar's expansion with Goliaths, Tanks and M&M. The force was lost.

Newblar meanwhile, had sent two control groups of Zerglings to Sephiroth's expo, where four Zealots and 1 Dragoon lay in wait. For some reason, Newblar's Zerglings waltzed in (attack command, bud) while the Zealots killed them. By the time Newblar realized, only 8 Zerglings remained. They retreated to just outside the expansion, and lay in wait.

Fenix expanded to mid right and bottom middle, and
Sephiroth expanded to the top middle. Fenix tried a 4 Vulture drop on Sephiroth's top right expo, but was repulsed by two Dragoons and several Probes who acted as shields for the hulking Protoss warriors.

Newblar had frantically teched to Guardians after losing his expansion, and finally broke Fenix's containment. He tried to attack Fenix's bottom middle expansion, but was forced back by two Wraiths and a large group of M&M. After having his expansion razed (again), Newblar gave, and asked to watch the rest of the game.

Sephiroth expanded to mid left, and the table was set. Both players had large armies, good economies, and had taken out the only distraction. Who would prevail?

Upgrades:

Sephiroth: 2-0-2 Protoss ground and 1-0-1 Protoss air.
Fenix: 2-2-2 Terran Vehicle Armor, 1-2 Terran Infantry, and 1-0 Terran Air.

First skirmishes:

Sephiroth exposed his strategy as the defenses at Fenix's mid right expo as the tanks were Stasised by a waiting Arbiter. This proved a hindrance to , however, as his troops could not get through. More Tanks were brought in, and the attack was repulsed after the deaths of several Dragoons. Sephiroth was not deterred, however, and when the Stasis Field wore off, Psionic Storms crackled above the heads of the Tank crews, as 8 Tanks were wiped out by 3 Psi Storms. The addition of a Bunker and several Goliaths to the expansion saved it, but it would be hit again and again by overwhelming Protoss forces until it fell.

Fenix sent a squad of 12 Goliaths, 5 Tanks and a group of M&M to Sephiroth's mid left expansion. It was killed at the loss of 2 Goliaths, but three control groups of Zealots poured in (a bit overkill, but it worked =[) and wiped out the Terran invaders. The surviving 2 Goliaths, 3 Marines and 2 Medics retreated back over the bridge, and the Zealots did not follow.

Meanwhile, across the map, the battle for the mid right expansion was coming to its climax. Three times Sephiroth had attempted to break the Terran defenses, and three times he had been repulsed. Mounds of dead Dragoons and Zealots lay outside the wall of Tanks, and this would be Sephiroth's last chance.

Stasis Field was called, Psi Storms were ripped off above the heads of the repairing SCV's and ground troops. A Shuttle and Reaver took their toll as Sephiroth's excellent micro and large ground force overwhelmed the Terrans. Fenix retreated over the ramp, and set up camp, waiting for his chance.

Once again a large force of Terrans invaded the mid left expansion, this time looking for revenge. 2 control groups of Goliaths, around 25 Marines and 15 Medics, along with a Science Vessel and 8 Tanks, sped over the bridge, killed the Zealot defenders, and roared on toward Sephiroth's main, taking out building after building.

Once again Zealots appeared on the scene, along with an Arbiter. The Marines were Stasised, the Goliaths were microed (horribly, I might add, by myself), and the Tanks were Sieged and un-Sieged. When all was said and done, 14 out of 42 Zealots remained, along with 16 Stasised Marines and 5 Stasised Medics. 5 more Zealots were moved in to take care of this threat when the Stasis Field wore off, and once again Fenix had been repulsed.

Growing desperate, Fenix made a drive up the unoccupied middle of the map with most of his army. All upgrades were at Level 3 for both players now, and Fenix was heading for the top middle expansion, where 4 Gateways lay. This was half of Sephiroth's production capability, and Fenix knew if he could take it out, victory would once again be in his grasp.

The expansion was lightly defended. As he drove toward the vital Gateways, Zealots and High Templar streamed out from nowhere. Another Arbiter was floating above the battlefield, but Comsat was cast, and soon the Arbiter was blown out of the skies.

The battle raged for days (30 seconds), with no clear winner, until rescue forces came up from behind for Sephiroth. Caught between the two forces, Fenix retreated, with two Goliaths and one Tank remaining.

Sephiroth had one base with minerals, Fenix had none. Fenix had a stockpile of 3200/1400 though, while Sephiroth had 900/250. It was a question of who could rebuild their armies the fastest, as Fenix had killed 3 of the 4 Gateways at the top middle expansion.

A calm enveloped the battlefield for almost three minutes, as supply limits were stretched, and the players began maneuvering for the advantage. Fenix had decided to let Sephiroth attack first, which was his mistake.

Zealots streamed into Fenix's expo natural from two different ramps. Reavers took out the blocking buildings, and Dragoons headed in as well. A small force broke off from the group and took out the bottom middle expansion, and all seemed lost.

His army once again in retreat, Fenix fled up his ramp, and camped there. With 1500/800 left, he could still possibly pull it off, but Sephiroth's economy had recovered, taking Newblar's natural, which hadn't been mined out.

Dropships were massed, along with Firebats, Vultures, Goliaths, Tanks, and Medics. A force of twelve Dropships skirted the edge of the map, and dropped their cargo at Sephiroth's top right expansion.

It was razed, as was the natural below. The Dropships were loaded back up, and headed for the top middle expo. Losses: Fenix: 1 Firebat, Sephiroth: the two expansions, and 4 Zealots.

Top middle was a battle ground once again as the troops were dropped off. The buildings were turned into piles of rubble through the efforts of dozens of 12mm Autocannons and 30mm Arclite Cannons. Sephiroth sent a desperation assault at Fenix's main... and broke through the ramp, losing many warriors who moved to the final phase of the Khala, but their brethren broke through the Terran defenses and into the main.

Now it was up to 8 Marines, 2 Medics and a Tank to hold off 9 Zealots. The placement of the Factories was a wall, but then an Arbiter moved in. Cloaked, the Zealots slaughtered the Terrans, losing only one of their own.

Back at top middle, the huge Terran army moved toward Sephiroth's main... to meet with the reserves: 2 Dozen Zealots, a Dozen Dragoons, and 8 High Templar. The infantry died quickly to storms, and the Zealots took care of the Goliaths and Tanks. Fenix said gg, and left, and Newblar soon followed suit.

Thoughts: If I had taken Newblars natural instead of leaving it bare, I would have had a staging point to attack the middle left expo and would have denied those resources to Sephiroth. All in all, not much I could have done more to win this in my opinion, other than dropping sooner and then using the high ground to decimate Sephiroth's troops.

Final Scores:

Sephiroth(SK): 289,123
~Fenix~(SR): 272,876
[Newblar]: 77,924

Note: If anyone would show me the HTML command to make the background black, that would be nice. White background suck :(.
