I was hangin' in Nohunters last night on my smurf name, Eggtimer, when Ultraliskpoop challenged me to a game. I accepted, and he told me to make the game. I was just about to suggest a game on a nice two player map, but Vladamir asked if he could observe, so I decided to pick a map I've never played before but I had heard people talk about; Alpha Draconis.
The game was set. It was me taking Zerg in the upper right, and him taking Protoss and starting in the upper left.
I went with 10/9 overlord then pool, and built a second hatch near my original hatch. I left just enough space to put a creep colony in between my hatches, then sent a scout out to see where the expansions and my enemy were. When the pool was built, I sent out zerglings to each corner for scouting, and built a third hatch south of my base before starting on serious zergling production. The gas and hydra den weren't too far behind...
My scouting overlord and zerglings found that he had gone with two gates, and had just built a forge for cannons. I took 12 zerglings and ran towards his town. In a slight brain-fart, I sent BOTH groups of 6 behind the minerals, instead of sending one group up front and one behind. This resulted in him chasing my zergies into his peon line, and me only getting 1 or 2 of his probes before the zealots caught up. By the time that attack failed, the cannons were starting to warp in and it was too late for early zerglings. I switched to a hydra den and started a lair upgrade, then scouted my opponent again. He was still massing zealots, and was starting a cyb. core, and had STILL not expanded, so I thought I had the upper hand. Unfortunately, due to my unfamiliarity with the map, I was having trouble finding good expansions except in the starting points. I then discovered that most of the good expansions were on cliffs. Ahhhhh.
Noticing that my bases were open for drops, I decided to deter him from dropping by attacking. I took 12 hydras and 16 or so zerglings and headed back to his main. He had lots of zealots and a couple of drags there, and had already gotten to the robotics facility and was climbing to templars too. The hydras chewed on his zealots and the zerglings died to cannons, and when the smoke cleared there were still a few zealots left. I took the last few hydras that were left over and retreated. Him, feeling like he had the upper hand, went at me with massed zealots, pushing the advantage he had just gotten in defending. Fortunately, I had rebuilt to 8 hydras and 12 zerglings, and that was BARELY enough to take out the counter 6 or 7 zealots that came out.
This game went back and forth, me building and throwing hydras and zerglings at him, and him eventually climbing to templars and reavers. It wasn't until about the 30 minute mark that the game was decided, which is when he dropped my only expansion just as it was getting into full swing. I had expanded in the lower right start spot, cause I couldn't find a better place. It was all the way across the map and I knew it was a bitg risk. He brought most of his forces with him on the drop, and mine were at my main, so I opted to retaliate with all of my forces to his main. He destroyed my expansion, and I romped into his main, killing many units and a few buildings (including the support facility and temp archives) before the attack was deterred by a reaver, a templar and a few zealots.
Then I looked up and started crying.
I had 240 minerals, 36 zerglings, and my drones had just finished mining my only production facility dry. My game was over.
Vlad mentioned that I had not upgraded my units at all in the long game. It would have helped had I done upgrades other than hydra range and speed, and zerglings speed and attack. Also, he mentioned to ultra that I was open to a drop on my backside early on. Ultra coutered with "When was I supposed to drop him? He was attacking me the whole time and I was defending"
I lost 300 units during the game to his 75, which I just LOVE to see when talking about a zerg-protoss battle. That means the fighting was constant and intense. He slightly out-resourced me due to his expanding in the lower left. I actually used the last of my zerglings to try and kill that expansion, but fell JUST short of being able to do it. After all the intense fighting was over, Vladamir was pretty much just typing "Wow" as a response to what he had seen. It was one of the funner battles I've ever had....
GG ultra. Glad I kept you busy for the amount of time I did!
