Two and a half years ago, our family took a trip to Korea.(YES IM A HACKING KOREAN LAMER HUKHUK) We haven't been their since before we first came to America when I was three, and I was going there when I was 11. There I found out about this little game called "Starcraft" from my uncle.(Vanilla SC) Not knowing about Battle.net, I played through the campaigns, and it was the greatest, although very tough. My Archon Army of Death rampaged their way through the Protoss campaign, my "Bunker Push" through the Terran campaign, and then there was Zerg. Coming back to U.S., I saw that it was also getting popular in America. So I bought the CD, and played my heart out. Unfortunately, there were a GREAT many things wrong with my play. I only had one peon per mineral, and therefore would lose to a mass assault 3 out of 4 times.
This was sad because I thought all my losses were due to imcompetance, so I read every single geocities strategy there EVER was. Obviously those did not help much. But playing with such a handicap had also helped me in a way. It forced me to micro extensively, and pushed me to the edge of macroing, with hotkey every which way(My minerals never got above 300 unless it was for expanding or for future pileup). My record got up to 240-80-16 in Original. Then came BroodWar. Remember that I was a 12 year old dumbass(Now I'm a 14 year old dumbass), so I thought lurkers were just so cool (Plus they got their own spot in my campaign rampages , "Mass Lurkers of Doom"). They were cool to watch, and were easy to make since my one peon per mineral policy had let the gas to mineral ratio balance out. A couple months later, the hype died, and the idea of lurkers, dark templars, mind control, it was all gay. Plus, I got pissed because my loyalness to the game didn't amount to much. It wasn't until last year that I learned from a friend to never stop making peons, and that was the time I started kicking major ass.
Years later, Counterstrike came out. TALK ABOUT ADDICTING. This was a new "fad" everywhere, and all my friends were talking about it. I soon got it myself, and played, and it was a very fun game. For a couple months I had locked away my Starcraft CD and played CS hardcore, and I was good at it. But the question is, was Counterstrike better for me than Starcraft? It ended up with a "no", and I was back to Starcraft Brood War. My rusty ass sucked. That really made me angry so I practiced again extensively for a month. The game I'm about to present to you, is a game I played that was the first good 1v1 I had ever since my return.
It was me against Bombsquad. Nothing major just a nice pub game I made on Temple. We both randomed, and I got Terran on the bottom, and he got Zerg on the right. This was obviously the worst spot for both of us, because I would send my scouter clockwise, and he would send his overlord counterclockwise. Incredibly as I would later find out, he sent the overlord straight to my base. Anyways, I started a standard wall-in, rax, refinery, academy, then factory. Soon a scouting zergling came, and immediately I started an engineering bay while periodically comsating to check when his lurkers would be done. When I first comsatted, his hydra den had just finished, and he was getting ready to upgrade his hatchery to a lair. I was pumping M&Ms, and attacked with a small force of 2 medics and 5 marines. A zergling which was at the entrance of my base was standing there, but I didn't see it, my units didn't see it, but I think he saw it. He immediately started hydralisks which were done just as my force arrived to his base. Half of my marines spotted an overlord and starting shooting it while the other half attacked. Due to the seperation his hydra army was overwhelming, so I retreated with what remained as one marine and a medic as he started a sunken colony.
I teched hard knowing I needed science vessels, while he continued massing hydralisks while researching overlord speed for his hydra drop. I also had a booming economy, so I set up about four barracks due to my abundance of minerals. I prepared for a drop of my own as a distraction while I continued teching, so I mase two dropships. One was for a turbo newb on his gas (Set the tanks on the top right cliff and scout with the dropship to kill his gas), and one was for a marine/medic drop on his mineral line. Just as I sent my force to leave, he was also setting up his overlords. He had six of them, 4 filled with hydralisks, one with lurkers, and one with lings. I dropped my tanks and set them up, but only one of them was able to reach the extractor. Because of this I wasn't able to destroy it quick enough, and he dropped four hydras on the tanks and killed them. My other dropship, which was M&Ms, was on the very right edge of the screen, and thus the zerg army didn't see it. I did a quick comsat on his main as the hydras reentered the ovie. Seeing no threat(AKA lurker, sunkens, or spores) my dropship glided to the mineral line and dropped the units. As this was going on I was continuing teching and finally started a science vessel. Because the drop was his only source of income, he was ruined as I killed all his drones plus finished off his extractor once he got around to dropping his hydralisks yet again to finish me off. During all this dropping and reentering, I never saw once the overlord actually dropping the units, thus I never knew he would be hydra dropping, he probably took his time to hide it. But now it was his turn to do major damage, and he took his 6 overlords to the west main and got ready to drop. My base had four tanks in the front, along with about 25 marines and 7 medics. I was busy admiring my tanks when I saw 6 overlords floating into my base and immediately unsieged them.
The mineral line was protected by a single missile turret(I'm an idiot), and that was the place where he dropped all his units. The missile turret was aimed at the overlord with lurkers, but it was only a second late before the lurkers got out and burrowed as the overlord died. They immeditely killed my turret, and he moved six of his hydralisks to the far west side of my base to wreck havoc on my scvs from a safe haven while his lurkers and other hydras were in the middle fighting off my marines and tanks. I immediately comsatted, and the marines got rid of one of the lurkers but the other one survived. The zerglings immediately died, but the hydras and lurkers took what seemed like forever. I admit this was lack of creativity on my part because I could've just ran in about four marines, and targeted one that survived, having the splash damage from the marine hit and kill the lurker. But anyways my comsat was also run out from constant check up on the expansions. So I waited until my science vessel came out and with it the fear of the zerg player. He moved his remaining forces to the left most of my base. They killed off the chasing marines, but the various set up tanks finished them off. In the end, my supply dropped from about 90 to about 40, and his didn't drop at all because he kept rebuilding. Now was a good a time as ever to expand for him.
But instead he decided to try to finish me off, so he set up for a 4 overlord drop. But the things about drops is, they usually don't work twice in the same friggin place! I expanded to the right island with a floating CC, and I sent my science vessel on a scouting mission for possible drop sites. This time it was at the western-most part of his base, a good spot for security. I got three dropships, one with tanks and the others with marines. I sent them on their way, unloaded all my cargo, and tried to get a good spot to rain hell on him. I sieged and unsieged towards his base slowly while he again floated his overlords to a unseen spot, dropped his army, then attacked me with about 16 hydras and 2 lurkers. The marines died rather quick, but me wanting to be cost effective, quickly set up defensive matrix on my tanks, therefore getting a good 8 hydras dead before exploding. Both of us were starving at this point. His main ran out and he started a hatchery at his natural with an income of about 150/900.I stood up to get myself a sandwich. Actually I was just plain broke but was setting up the expansion on the bottom right island by ferrying scvs there. With nothing else to do, Bombsquad loaded up his overlords back and headed for my base. My base now had about 16 marines in the front along with two tanks, plus about four tanks scattered along the main. He dropped his things at the northern right part of my base, killing my entire front army and three depots with a surplus of 6 hydras and 2 lurkers. Luckily my other tanks were still there and they ran up, sieged, and finished them off. Seeing the tanks he immediately sent about 16 zerglings to my base, but due to his lack of micro he was owned. It was basically a tank version of the goon dance, retreating when hurt, then letting another attack, this combined with some leftover scvs repairing made the threat puny. A couple more lagging hydralisks came, but they were nothing. I rebuit my wallin plus the other depot, and prepare yet another drop on his main mineral line. As my dropship headed to the top right island (the starting point of the drop), he had completed a spire and was getting a hive. The force was dropped, but it didn't get anything done since there was nothing to kill except a spawning pool and the extractor with drones. Basically I just planned on retreating but 10 mutalisks quickly ran up and killed my dropship with the team inside. This attack was more good than bad though, because now I knew he was going air, probably because of his surplus of gas. After starting the build of about 6 75$ turrets at my island, I started pumping wraiths out of two starports, while using my science vessel as a scout. The vessel spotted his up and running natural, perfect for tanks. I loaded up a tank, three marines and an scv, and went to make an outpost. Unfortunately, an overlord was there, and the mutalisks were ready to come clear the threat as the scv finished the bunker. I rolled the tank inside the dropship, and ran away as my scv and marines were subjected to Zerg torture.
Bombsquad needed expansions now more than ever. He started an expansion north, which was found with my patrolling marine(I always keep a marine patrolling between all the bare mains and naturals). The marine immediately started attacking it, but Bombsquad didn't mind. He was too busy microing ten mutalisks around my main, AKA a landscape of marines and medics. They hit and ran my lone tanks, thus killing them, but his keyboard slipped or something and his army ran right into the heart of my infantry. He immediately ran away with four mutalisks left. Damn extra high latency. What he is doing right now is trying to annoy me while his northern expansion gets set up. He did some minor zergling drops which were easily stopped, and I took my control group of marines and 5 medics towards the north expansion but were stopped finding that Bombsquad had set up all his units at my entrance! I set up tanks on the cliffs overlooking his units, and killed some of his hydralisks as he retreated. My loner marine was dead now, I don't know how it died, but he started sunken colonies there. I sent my forces, ignoring the defenses, and took my "melt in your mouth, not in your hands" units and easily overcame the threat with focus firing. The expansion was gone. But wait, I had more going on! A good trick is to time your events so they fall simultaneously. It is easy to send a group of units to let's say an expansion, then focus on a drop or a harassment. Then by the time the two attacks are in effect, the opponent as to deal with both of them at the same time, unlike you who only had to deal with it one at a time. Basically I dropped even more M&Ms on his natural, which raped his drones plus a good deal of zerglings before it was stopped. The game was in my hands now. I prepared for my final attack, which was in five phases.
Phase 1 - I got my two science vessels and scouted for possible targets of irradicate. I found a couple lurks guarding the entrance, and they were soon taking care of. Doh! Couldn't find muties.
Phase 2 - I took my minor army which killed the northern expansion, and I sent it to attack the Zerg natural. The army destroyed the extractor, and pounded on a few lings before the lings at the main overwhelmed them. But before that...
Phase 3 - As my minor army left, I gathered my main army and they also headed for Bombsquad's base. Two tanks, 20 marines, and a couple scvs. Back to the present.
Phase 4 - The minor army was ripped apart just as the major army came in to set up. Bombsquad's army attacked mine and got away with killing everything except for my two scvs, a tank, and 6 marines. I set up a bunker, and put my marines in it. Then I set up the tank right next to it. About 20 lings came and killed the tank, but they couldn't finish off the bunker because it was being repaired. Just as Bombsquad was gathering more lings (his gas was gone)...
Phase 5 - ...my secret army of 20 wraiths flew in and he conceded. Good game.
This game showed me a few things. First of all, gas is so very important against Terran when your Zerg, so always make that the first priority. When I expand, I always start the building needed for gas along with the main building. Whether it is gaurdians, lurkers, or scourges, they all require so much gas. Don't underestimate the Mass Lurkers of Doom! You also should learn to use the spells, as annoying as they can get. Against a Terran, the strongest units CAN be a queen and defiler if used well. But often average people forget about these units. I don't think you should even bother with only hydralisks because they are so weak against Terran, instead focus on lurkers or air. Plus hydras are support units. The hydralisk drop was good, but a two lurker drop on my mineral line would've been better, and instead wait on the big army and use it to guard while you expand, and the Terran player is busy rebuilding. With Terran you should always stay aggressive, and use those little annoying tricks to get ahead. I myself suck with Terran, they are my worst race because they require good management on every aspect, plus tons of scouting. I thought I would lose this game because I imagined that after the drop he would've went crazy and expanded everywhere or at least have about 30 more hydras once I finished repelling the attack. But on the replay I saw that the M&M drop I did right before his big drop had a big effect on him, and he only had about 7 drones mining during half of the massive hydra drop. It was a good game and I would've contained him, expanded 1241 times, and nuked him to death but whatever. =D
I was kidding about the hacking lamer part. |
