Report 03 - 1v1 on (AGAIN) DIRE STRAITS [updated 09/16/01]
Dial-up users read this immediately
This report contains 6.3 megs of pics. Continue at your own peril.
That means for dial up users, this will take ~35 minutes to load at 28.8, ~18 min. for 56K (for those of you that can't divide)
If you have a slow connection, I suggest you wait until this report is rated and decide from there.
If you do decide to go ahead and some pics don't load, with my IE 5.5, I right clicked on each pic and selected "show picture". A simpler method might be, for IE (not netscape), to open the page, stop the download, and then save the page (it will usually download and save all the pics)
(This report was designed for IE 5.5. Also, it was redone on 9/16/01.)
First of all, my apologies to OneGameWonder and Ikantski, the subjects of this report. I observed this game over a month ago. | Why has it been so long since my last report? |

Welcome to another one of my reports! Just one thing, I like animated gifs more than collages, so if you're wondering why some small pics take so long to load, that's why.
As you should be able to see, this is a 1v1 on Dire Straits. The players are OneGameWonder (Random) vs. Ikantski (Selected: Protoss). Map and placements are below. |
Map Key
Large spots - mining bases
Medium spots - mined-out/not-yet-mining/diasabled-from-attacks bases
Small spots - important troop concentrations

OneGameWonder prepared to deploy his CC at the southwest island, while Ikantski warped in his robotic lovenest on the southeast island. Ikantski's probes then rolled out of their Nexus while OneGameWonder popped his 6 SCVs out the hatch just prior to touchdown (Crunch!! Oops! Better make that 4 SCVs). |
Buildup |
OneGameWonder went with a pretty standard tech build: depot, gas, barracks, depot, factory. From there a turtle build emerged with: engineering bay, bunker, machine shop, marine, depot, and even more defense (turrets and another bunker + marines)... OneGameWonder placed his buildings in a circle around his CC like a fence with one bunker inside and another guarding the minerals' approach.
Ikantski went for the always popular early reaver/goon. The build order was: pylon, gateway, gas, cybernetics core, pylon, robotics facility, pylon, dragoon, robotics support bay, dragoon, pylon, forge, shuttle, cannon. Ikantski's build was looser with the confidence of Protoss early rush capability |
Lets Get It On |
At this point Ikantski loaded up his reaver/goon and sent it on it's way while OneGameWonder raised a starport.
Unfortunately for Ikantski, a moment of inattention while searching allowed the shuttle to fly too close to a turret/bunker pair. The turret's parting shot cracked the shuttle like an eggshell. |

At this point OneGameWonder continued to tech to science facility with an academy for comsat. Ikantski warped in a starport before expanding to the northeast island.
OneGameWonder then proceeded to build up his forces using marines and siege tanks with dropships to transport. Ikantski built a replacement reaver before building corsairs and using them to patrol OneGameWonder's north and east borders. Ikantski popped out a total of 3 corsairs and 2 zealots at his main before adding some defense to his expansion
OneGameWonder then scouted Ikantski's main with a wraith and then waited at the 9 island, probably hoping to stop any expansion attempts. Ikantski then pulled his north border patrolling corsairs to cover the main east-west attack route. |

Soon after the wraith scouted, 2 dropships carrying 3 siege tanks and 4 marines headed toward Ikantski's main. On their first attempt, the dropships ran into a patrolling corsair and had to retreat and unload their marines.
The dropships then reloaded their cargo and circled north through the middle of the map and around the main east-west attack route. The dropships were finally sighted on approach to the southwest island by the corsairs, but they were too close and fully unloaded. |
The 3 siege tanks and 4 marines unloaded at the northern end of Ikantski's main while under fire from corsairs. The 4 marines were unable to prevent both dropships from being shot down, though the siege tanks quickly made blue goo out of a lone dragoon. Soon after the dragoon died however, 4 zealots arrived.
OneGameWonder attempted to position his tank/marine force behind Ikantski's mineral line killing 1 zealot and losing 1 siege tank on the way. OneGameWonder attempted to delay the incoming zealots with his marines while sieging his tanks. |

Unfortunately for OneGameWonder, Ikantski had positioned his reaver next to his mineral line to prevent such a maneuver. The 2 siege tanks were hit by a scarab and were soon disabled by a disruption web before a dragoon finished them off. The siege tanks probably fired off 1 salvo killing off 1 zealot (and a marine or two). |

No damage was done to the base and probably only 1 dragoon, 2 zealots, and possibly a few probes were killed. (Don't know exactly, had to empty screenshots)
After the raid was finished off, OneGameWonder lifted off a spare CC he had building at his base and floated it, like the big metal jellyfish it is, to the 9 island.
Ikantski brought his northeast expansion online while constructing observers to spy on OneGameWonder's attack routes. A patrolling corsair found the 9 expansion and attacked some incoming dropships until the 2 marines onboard were unloaded. |

The corsair fled with light damage, but two shuttles were sent from Ikantski's main immediately. The two shuttles came with a corsair escort and encountered a scouting wraith halfway to the 9 island. The wraith was only able to do minimal damage before the shuttles dropped their cargo of 3 dragoons and 1 reaver.
OneGameWonder only had time to lay down 1 bunker and set up his 2 siege tanks in siege mode before the shuttles arrived. More reinforcements were on their way by dropship, but Ikantski had a slight advantage at the moment. |
Ikantski quickly dropped a disruption web on the bunker, shutting down all terran anti-air. Both of OneGameWonder's siege tanks immediately targeted the reaver, stomping it like a Twinkie™, but one scarab managed to rip the bulk of their armor off.
The three dragoons (upgrades were 0/0/0, attack/armor/shield) easily finished off the two siege tanks (upgrades were 0/0, attack/armor) though they had absorbed some splash damage. The sacrifice was worth it though because the siege tanks had delayed the attackers long enough for the reinforcing dropships to arrive. A few more corsairs arrived but had no targets and hovered over the battlefield.
The two reinforcing dropships carried 2 siege tanks and 5 marines (upgrades were 0/0, attack/armor), which tore into the 3 dragoons and shredded them with no losses. The supporting corsairs received heavy damage but escaped.
The pursuing wraith (upgrades were 0/0, attack/armor) did manage to blast 1 shuttle after it dropped its cargo. Almost immediately though, a corsair (upgrades were 0/0/0, attack/armor/shields) managed to sneak behind it and pull off the tape holding the tinfoil together. |

OneGameWonder lost 2 siege tanks and a wraith plus a few SCVs, while Ikantski lost 3 dragoons, 1 reaver, and 1 shuttle. |
Power Up! |
After some buildup on both sides including bringing the 9 expansion online by OneGameWonder, aggressive scouting started again. OneGameWonder finally found Ikantski's northeast expansion and probed its defenses. Ikantski surrounded OneGameWonder's important areas carefully with observers while remaining out of detection range.
Soon after his main was mined out, OneGameWonder then sent 3 dropships to the northwest starting point where 5 of Ikantski's corsairs were waiting. 1 dropship was shot down while fully loaded but the other 2 dropped 2 siege tanks, 3 vultures, 1 marine, and 1 SCV. The 1 marine wasn't enough to drive off the corsairs though and both dropships went down.
At this point, Ikantski's main was also mined out.
At the northwest expansion, both siege tanks sieged up around the CC and the SCV built a turret while the vultures laid a thick minefield surrounding them.
OneGameWonder was going with a factory units/marines strategy and had 4 factories and 3 armories at this point. Ikantski had 4 gateways and 2 stargates and seemed to be going with a dragoon/corsair strategy while teching further (fleet beacon, arbiter tribunal, and templar archive).
Ikantski expanded to the 3 island while OneGameWonder's northwest defenses were increased to 3 siege tanks, 1 goliath, and 5 vultures. For some reason, Ikantski expanded naked to the upper and lower resource nodes of the mid-right island with no development beyond a Nexus and ~4 probes apiece.
OneGameWonder sent an exploratory force of 3 valkeries and 1 science vessel to the 3 island. On the way the force ran into the naked southern resource node of the mid-right island and stopped to kill a shuttle. Four dropships were launched while OneGameWonder still had local air superiority. |
Ikantski's airforce of 6 corsairs was waiting at the 12 island and was joined by 2 arbiters.
5 tanks, 4 goliaths, and 4 SCVs were unloaded over the southern end of the mid-right island and quickly popped the lone nexus.
Ikantski , seeing the attacking force, sent his airforce to the northwest island which was under surveillance. The first arbiter brought in troops from the northeast base, consisting of: 6 zealots, 10 dragoons, and 2 high templar. The second arbiter soon hoovered up and popped out 15 zealots and 1 dragoon from the southeast island. |

12 zealots and 11 dragoons (upgrades were 1/1/1, attack/armor/shields, which was as high as they went for the game) surged forward like 2000 Flushes overflowing a toilet bowl. 9 zealots and the 2 high templar decided to wait for clearer instructions then ATTACK and instead played jacks and 4-square.
The minefield seriously weakened the incoming zealots, and many died to sieged tank fire (upgrades were 1/1, attack/armor). Bad dragoon pathing let 5 of Ikantski's zealots die before the first dragoon opened fire.
6 zealots died doing their duty by absorbing the brunt of the marine (upgrades, 0/0), sieged tank, and vulture fire and helping the dragoons to destroy 2 siege tanks. Only 1 of the initial 12 zealots survived because he paused to carve his initials into a factory. |
The playground group of 9 zealots joined the last zealot and helped tear down the remaining structures. Disruption webs disabled the last siege tank and bunker, but even then, mines and vultures killed 1 zealot and 1 dragoon. |

A total of 13 zealots, 1 dragoon, and maybe a corsair were lost in the attack, OneGameWonder lost the entire expansion and defenses. The actual losses were ~1425 in minerals lost by Ikantski and ~2000 minerals lost by OneGameWonder.
This was a major victory for Ikantski though, because OneGameWonder was down to 1 nearly mined out expansion. |
OneGameWonder had not been idle during this attack however, and had loaded up his raid force, sending them toward the 3 island.
The 5 siege tanks spread some more blue goo from a lone dragoon and smashed a photon cannon before switching to siege mode. The 4 goliaths formed a screen line and absorbed the cannon fire until the tanks finished their transformation. (Pics were boring)
In added insult, OneGameWonder ordered the construction of a CC before Ikantski's Nexus was even fired upon. |

Ikantski dispatched three shuttles of dragoons to the 3 island from his northeast expansion. The troops in the northwest continued to eradicate all traces of OneGameWonder's base. Ikantski must have had a transport shortage (arbiters weren't recharged) and wanted to hit them immediately instead of waiting for more shuttles.
Unfortunately for Ikantski, his shuttles dropped their cargo inside the targeting radius of 5 sieged tanks. The first two dragoons were splattered goo seconds after they hit the ground. 2 forward screening goliaths were lost before the siege tanks could squash the remaining 4 dragoons.
After this failed counter attack, Ikantski and OneGameWonder were roughly equal in expansions and troops. |
Ikantski had seen OneGameWonder's expansion building at the 3 island and sent a charged up arbiter in, at the same time, OneGameWonder's patrolling valkeries spotted Ikantski's other naked expansion and a lone marine was sent in to clean up the expansion.
10 dragoons warped in on the 3 island from Ikantski's main and received the same treatment as the previous raid. The 10 dragoons were still 1/1/1 in upgrades and were blasted away, taking 3 siege tanks and 2 goliaths with them. A follow up raid by a shuttle of zealots killed 1 tank and damaged another tank, the last defender. The raids also succeeded in stopping any mining from the 3 island.
The current number of mining expansions at this point is 0. Ikantski has lost or mined out all of his expansions and has delayed any mining from 3. OneGameWonder ran out of expansions first and needs all his units to defend. Ikantski still has many troops, but has transportation difficulties, the shuttles keep dying and the arbiters need charging. |
OneGameWonder and Ikantski had several small aerial battles (no air upgrades for either except for shields,1), but in each battle, a large number of corsairs attacked a much smaller group of valkeries and quickly killed them. OneGameWonder's dropships relied more on the marines and goliaths they carried than the escorting fighters.
Two shuttles brought in 3 dragoons and 1 reaver, saving the nexus at the top of the mid-right island from the awesome power of 1 marine (It took 2 dragoon shots and a scarab to take him down). The marine had been left long enough to kill all the probes and to disable the nexus's shields as well as 109 hitpoints off the building itself. |

OneGameWonder was moving 5 dropships with an escort of 3 valkeries and 1 science vessel across the map when it experienced the battle above, none of the ground forces were damaged. 2 dropships and 1 science vessel were lost and replacements were sent to carry on the attack. The troops were then divided among 6 dropships before heading towards the northeast base.
Update! OneGameWonder's 3 expansion was running at 100%, while Ikantski's mid-right base was at 33%. |
The assault group's 6 dropships unloaded 5 siege tanks, 4 goliaths, and 4 marines safely and then pulverized a nearby dragoon. Unfortunately, the northeast base was a major troop producer and 12+ dragoons were taking a nap in a nearby field. An arbiter was parked over the group for mutual protection.
OneGameWonder's science vessel quickly fired an EMP into the incoming dragoons before moving north of the battle. He then converted his siege tanks to siege mode due to the fact that they were fighting large, ranged units. |

The southern end of the dragoon group moved forward under the arbiter's field and opened fire on the screening goliaths and marines. The northern end of the dragoon group targeted the siege tanks and managed to kill one before they finished transforming. The 6 corsairs that were guarding the mid-right base quickly supplied aircover.
4 dragoons exploded like stomped grapes when the 4 siege tanks fired their first salvo, due to a combination of EMP and splash damage. A disruption web flared on over top pair of siege tanks before they could fire again taking them out of the battle. The bottom 2 siege tanks managed to fire again taking out 1 more dragoon before they were destroyed.
The front 2 marines were targeted by the oncoming dragoons and fought back but were quickly killed. The last 2 marines helped kill corsairs initially and then managed to take one dragoon out before they were killed.
Where were the goliaths? The 4 goliaths did more damage in $ (mineral and gas) terms then the rest of the assault group. The goliaths didn't supply any assistance to the ground battle because they were busy slaughtering the 6 overhead corsairs. All 6 of the corsairs were destroyed while they were chasing down dropships. The 6 corsairs destroyed cost 900 minerals and 600 gas compared to 7 dragoons worth 875 minerals and 350 gas. |

At the end of the battle Ikantski had 6 dragoons and 1 arbiter, while OneGameWonder had 3 dropships alive out of the entire group. Ikantski lost 7 dragoons and 6 corsairs worth 1775 minerals and 950 gas. OneGameWonder lost 5 siege tanks, 4 goliaths, 4 marines, 1 science vessel and 3 dropships worth 1750 minerals and 1225 gas. |

The damage given and taken at the northeast base may even have not been very important to OneGameWonder. 3 dropships carrying 6 tanks departed OneGameWonder's main during the middle of the battle heading toward the mid-right island. The attack at the northeast base may have been a feint to draw defenders off of the mid-right island and force Ikantski to expend his recall ability as well.
Ikantski had completed 4 shuttles at this point and sent them over to the northwest island to pickup some dragoons. |
OneGameWonder's 3 dropships came to a hover over the southern end of the mid-right island and received obscene leg gestures from 2 patrolling dragoons. The insulted dropships quickly unloaded their 6 siege tanks and both dragoons were quickly popped.
Ikantski unloaded his 4 shuttles carrying 6 dragoons on the mid-left island and swept away 1 marine and 1 SCV that OneGameWonder had left there. |

OneGameWonder began a tank push north, which was disrupted by a d-web from a nearby corsair. A lone siege tank was covered by the disruption web before the reaver and dragoon killed it. The dragoon needed to move closer to engage the tank and was destroyed by tank fire before it could retreat again. The reaver was finally smashed when 4 tanks rolled north and blasted it losing another siege tank in the process. |
Ikantski reloaded three dragoons and unloaded then on top of three siege tanks. 1 dragoon was lost through concentrated tank fire from 2 unsieged tanks, while the other 2 were lost because they were a little too far from a sieged tank. The disruption web wore off the fourth siege tank and allowed it to deliver the finishing shot.
The 4 shuttles then headed back to the northwest to pick up the remaining forces there. 9 zealots, 1 dragoon, and 2 high templar were still there. |
The 4 shuttles dropped at OneGameWonder's main and the attackers then attempted to cut their way through, but were destroyed by sieged tank fire. (Just some zealots being blasted in a terran building maze). The force only managed to kill 1 vulture, 1 goliath, and 2 siege tanks that were out in the open.
After the attackers were blasted to pieces, 4 dropships dumped 6 siege tanks and 4 goliaths at Ikantski's undefended main and began a tank push. The vehicle upgrades completed after they landed, giving them 2/2, attack/armor. |

Ikantski , knowing the importance of taking out the game's last working expansion, sent his arbiter to the 3 island. His remaining forces consisting of 8 dragoons, 1 carrier, and 1 corsair were recalled into the base.
The corsair immediately placed a disruption web on a sieged tank and 4 marines while the dragoons dispatched another siege tank. The dragoons advanced after losing 2 of their number and destroyed the disabled siege tank and marines. The dragoons then tried to fire upon the bunker and last siege tank but stopped to fire under the disruption web. A quick retreat was ordered but the sieged tank took out another dragoon. |
The corsair laid down another disruption web on top of the bunker and siege tank. The dragoons then took out the two while the bunker kept producing marines. A rush by three SCVs managed to take down 1 dragoon while the now unbunkered marines took fire. |

Leading to... |

Finally 2 of OneGameWonder's cloaked wraiths showed up and blasted the carrier apart while the SCVs took a break from mining to do a little deconstruction of the 2 dragoons.
Ikantski still had 2 carriers, some corsairs, and a few ground troops but he was totally out of minerals. Both carriers either had none or very few interceptors.
OneGameWonder's expansion had been running for awhile and he was flush with cash.
Ikantski chose to surrender the battle and end the game gracefully.

Postgame
Lessons:
1. Dragoons versus sieged tanks, are you nuts? DON'T DO IT! Zealots are good. Air units are even better.
2. Mined-out mains aren't worth hitting unless you can take many or crucial buildings out
3. Scout your enemy and adapt your strategy to counter, don't keep using a bad strategy. (See lesson 1)
4. Making a report from 581 screenshots sucks. I'm taking a vacation.
As you can tell from the last few paragraphs and the postgame, I DON'T CARE ANYMORE! I'M DONE! WOOHOO!
If you want me to make smaller reports from now on, leave some comments. I will not do that unless I get more then a couple of requests. I'm lazy. =P |
