Make note this is my first BR; I didn't get any Screenshots because I was embroiled in the game and it didn't occur to me to take any. My apologies.
I was in Nohunters on Saturday (Or friday... had a bad weekend...), lurking around for a game or two, but it was one of those rare times I couldn't find anyone (I seem to have good luck hopping into games, myself. :>). After a period of pining, I just gave up and checked out the Pubbies on the Ladder, figuring I could try and boost my rating a little by playing an equally rated opponent if I could dig one up. Sure enough, I dug one up - "1v1 Temple 1000+!!" My first hint to quit ASAP was "U NO DISC PLZ" "PLZ" "PLEEEEEEEEZ" and equivalent begging. With a sigh at the ominous commentary, I said okay, knowing that if I kicked his ass he'd be the one to drop.
I switched my race to Terran, and immediately my opponent switches to zerg with a "hehe."
Hehe this you little crackling.
Early Game:
I started off with a modified Anti-zerg build from the older days (Dunno the new BO's :P); Rax on 8, Depot on 9, Second Rax on 10 after the first was done. I pumped out a marine to scout and kept on with SCV production because I wanted a roaring economy early on; from experiences I've had, if I stick with infantry and have a good saturation on minerals, I can keep pace with Zerg players that have 1-2 more expansions than I do until late in the mid game. I didn't even bother walling off the choke; I wanted troops bad.
The Lone Ranger sped off into the sunset hunting my enemy, and found the sneaky bastard just as I started my Academy. Saving on minerals by foregoing a Geyser Mine yet, my Lone Ranger parks his butt behind the peon line to shred drones - after he reports back that the hatch is Morphing but there's no sign of a den or other defenses. Receiving that vital info, six buddies storm down my own ramp and roar off towards the Zerg base.
Too bad they didn't get there in time to save him; in fact, once they got there they were greeted by a trio of Hydras and a sunken to run defense. Blitzing by, the Corps parked behind the peon line, grimly noting that the Lair was already up. They did accomplish something though - they kept the Drones off minerals for a vital minute or so until those Hydras morphed into Lurkers. I had him on money now.
Back home, the ComSat had gone up about the same time the Blitz Brigade put themselves into park; Only 2 SCV's had been pumping gas, so I moved a third in and started up U238 production in lieu of Medics or Bats. With the Blitz Brigade acting as suicide ddistraction, the upgrade came in, a full dozen Marines were parked at my ramp top and about a half dozen medics were there backing them by the time the last of the assault team went down to freshly morphed Lurkers.
Mid Game:
He was in a bad way at this point; my Sat was charged to over 100, I had an Armor upgrade in the works from my E-bay and Stim along the route as well. Anticipating a retaliation strike, an SCV hurried over to my ramp and threw up a Turret... and finished just as 5 - not 2 or 3, but 5 of the bastards try to scurry up the ramp. Like an idiot, he assumed I'd bunkered and tried to slip past - instead he slammed head-on into stimmed gauss fire with a spotting Turret and angry troopers. 3 of the grungy beatniks exploded in soupy gore in an attempt to back off; two of the bastards scuttled out of Sight range and burrowed, trying a containment theme.
It wasn't early game any more; that many Rines and Meds dont care about two snotty little Lurkers. Barreling down the ramp, the M&M's tore into the pair with a ComSat sweep even as more reinforcements piled out of 3rd Rax, a fourth being built along side a factory. I was so ahead on Gas at this point I figured I'd try a tank push, since a second sweep of his main told me he was sticking to Lurkers and Hydras.
At that point it occured to me the guy must have an expansion. Grabbing every unit I had available along with an SCV, my now-sizeable army stormed out seeking to inflict much pain. Absentmindedly, I que'd a tank and another six marines, not realizing I needed to expand because I still had enough cash AFTER that to build a CC. So intent on wreaking havoc, my macro went to hell for a minute.
My recon had gone to hell as well; out of habit I parked about 15 marines and 8 medics outside the mouth of his natural so they could mass up and go in at once; meanwhile, the SCV started building turrets and bunkers so they'd have something to fall back into in case all hell broke loose. It was also great psychological warfare - seeing bunkers and turrets going up right outside your base can really sting a zerg pride. And, oh holy hell did it - he must have been pissed to all hell because up popped waiting lurkers and out stormed a batch of hydras... and, like an idiot, right into the funnel my Rines were parked in. Stim, let the meds pour on the love and sweep with the sat... eat the rich baby.
That victory made me cocky; I swept the area again, stimmed and stormed in. He'd built about 5 sunkens like a fool (At this point he was so damn defensive I had little or no way of losing; every one of his expansion attemps was thwarted by spotting marines at available land-based sites), and the M&M's tore through it as I just played Blind God and checked out my own main.
Waiting for orders were a Tank and about a dozen more rines. Queing up a few more and goggling at my resource surplus, I sent off for two expansions simultaneously, started a Starport and ordered up more tanks; it was either too late for a push or no point. He was bottled into his Main and I owned the ground.
Those reinforcements from home moved out, and in my arrogance after annihalating his Expansion I pushed up the ramp suffering heavy losses, just to prove I could get up there and thumb my nose. More evidence that this guy didn't suck as I was hoping he would was that in his defensive frenzy he managed to dance Hydras long enough for another half-dozen lurks to scuttle in and set up. Catching a glimpse of a mad-sunken spree on his creep, the forward team pulled back down from the enemy ramp and holed up in bunkers.
The End Draws Nigh - Lurker Soup Tastes Like Chicken
With reinforcements en route but the forward element all but broken, I sounded a general recall - patrolling Marines and scattered SCVs started moving towards the choke hold I'd built to keep that guy leery of breaking out. He had plans though - a group of hydras rolled down the ramp and flung themselves at the bunker... but a few snuck into the shadows on the right. Wtf? Check it out boys.
Shredding the pathetic assault, the few rines that had made it there stroll out into the cul-de-sac to see what they can see. Damnit! More Lurkers, but morphing. More and more marines pile in, shooting themselvs up... one egg actually splatters before it hatches, and a second lurker dies before it can burrow, oozing soupy chunks everywhere. The third gets down and starts getting it on . but hotkeying ComSat is fun and entertaining. That little bastard went down as well, but not after I did a foolish thing and ignored it for a minute to manage troops. It managed to eat a turret I'd placed out of Bunker range before I swept and slaughtered.
The Tank was here now. Reinforcements have arrived.
Up the ramp we haul ass; rather than start attacking, I keep the siege going, creeping forward with fortifications. A Turret at the top of the ramp, a second turret started, siege the tank and start pounding Sunks... wtf?
A demonic cry comes up from overhead - Muties. A brief moment of trepedation as I canvas the damn map with my now 3-strong comsats, but no expansions. It's a joke - 4 muties at most, trying to lure my rines in. They fell for it just enough to engage a band of looming Hydras, letting the tank die. The turret goes down and a slough of more lurkers scuttles in... but the second turret goes up just as a sweep covers the area. There were too many lurkers this time though; it was all he could field, but it was enough to halt my advance.
More turrets up on his home field... just as the two new tanks roll in alongside almost 3 dozen marines. No hope for the organic.
The tank-struts go down as they enter mode, he swings in muties to take a peek... and they get torn to shreds by the Heavy Metal Mob waiting with vengeance glittering in their eyes.
Out of fear, the bastard then disconnects, realizing he just got owned by Terran Infantry and a few tanks.
Lessons Learned:
- Don't bother with the Ladder.
- If you do bother with the ladder:
- Don't join games that say "No disc." They'll disc.
- Quit games where the other guy asks you not to disc after you've joined.
- Find opponents from channels or clans you know well - they know better than to stain their rep among
the crowd they're in. Usually.
- Find out what the hell Manner and Chobo mean so you can tell me.
- Don't rely on Lurkers after the rush fails. I didn't even have an SV roll out until the final siege on his base, and I never used it when I did have the thing.
- Terran Infantry kicks serious ass against Zerg. With 4 rax I was out-producing the Zerg player on ground troops; granted, he only had 2 extra hatches, but Marines are cheaper than Hydras and they eat up lings with stim and med support. I had barely even begun expansion production on the two new bases I'd built - I just didn't really need it, even with the heavy infantry.
- This does not prove or disprove anything about balance. I don't want to hear either side.
- Lurkers sound really funny when they die.
- I still suck. :> |
