It even tried to cap the “i” in my tag…but I laid the smack down on this editor. There is another clan out there that goes by [I] and is lead by a total faggot…so can’t have that. ANYWAY….
Without further ado, I present to you Stendec vs. hillpoint. I’ll give y’all 1 guess as to what the map was…go on…guess…BGH??? Who the hell said that?!?!? Newbies, LEAVE NOW. That’s right, it's The Lost Temple. But…for a change, it’s NOT a ZvP game, but a TvP game. Yes…that’s right. VARIANCE, ppl. Say it with me variance….vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaariance.
Allow me to go over with you the tendencies of TvP games…or PvT games…games involving T&A…err, P. The strategy of choice for a Terran is typically mech. For those of you unaware of what mech is (you are NOT of this world), it is the mechanical units a terran produces out of factories. The reason for this, in a word, is psi-storm. Rines and storm mix like oil and water.
The anti-thesis to mech strategy is varied for the toss race. A few things can be done to contain, kill or slow the terran going mech. Mech typically takes a few minutes to really get going, in which time a toss may get his groove on. Strat choices vs mech vary from dragoon contain/rush, to DT rushing and zealot rushing. A hard 2 gate zealot rush MAY tear down a Terran’s wall-in (setup at ramp to NOT allow even a zealot to pass through), thus opening up the floodgates. A 2-gate goon rush, or 3-gate goon rush will also accomplish this w/o tank presence. DT rushing is gay….but it is a viable strat as all strats are. If a terran goes mech and forgoes ebay or scanner, a single DT can tear down a wall in and then said floodgates are opened. Problems with these toss strats are that 1: they are VERY predictable and can be owned by a M&M acad rush that no toss seemingly expects. 2: 1.08 is gonna own goon rushers. =) So terran users, use predictability to your advantage. To find out what they are doing, I like to fly and ebay into their base. You’ll need the turrets anyway, right? Some of you may be saying to yourselves “why is he telling ME this. I know this stuff.” Well, this game wasn’t a GREAT game, so I have used it as sort of an educational piece. A lot of newer players or curious players about terran/toss read these reports. This may offer them some insight, especially the terran aspect of it.
Okay, time for the show to start. (btw, don’t ya just love a good preview before movies?) Warning, this is prolly a text only report. You’re loving your phone connections now, guys!
Stendec landed his purple flying saucer at the gosu starting spot at 3. For terran, tanks protect the ramp despite your expansion being behind it. Hillpoint warped in his pyramid at 6, a sucka$$ starting spot. Too wide a choke, I say. But hell, PvT imbalance right? (crybabies)
The early builds were pretty standard random builds, depot 8, rax on 10 and toss going dual gate. After the rax (I think) terran pulls a nice move by refinery dropping the toss. (O refinery for y’all out there) while making a refinery of his own at his base. Vespene is very intoxicating, no one likes drunken templars wandering about, you know. Storming everything in sight…ugly. Gets really ugly.
At this time, Stendec finishes his “wall-in” and my fellow observer [Xe’l]Cows and I notice it has a leak. Not Stendec, but his wall. =) hillpoint, being the sharp hill (get it? Pointy hill?hahahaha…nm) he is, notices this as well and sends out the gosu of gosus…the single zealot rush. During that time, 2 factories have started being constructed by 2 scvs. Just imagine if YOU could build a house alone in 30 seconds…man. I’d make some serious jack to spend on CPU stuff. Anyway….the zealot makes it through the hella crappy wall-in and kills one of the scvs making the factory, he is fended off by scvs and a new vulture made outta the one that finished. NP, easy stuff…then hillpoint, not staying idle, has sent 4 more zealots at the wall, by the time he gets there, Stendec has 3 vultures and an scv. A goon shows up to photon the hell outta the humans when a marine pops out of the lone barracks. With some very nice micro involving his forces and scv assistance, Stendec fended off the attack. A second attack came shortly after involving 5 goons vs 4 vultures and a tank with scv/single rine. Again, nice micro wins the day and Stendec is still standing tall. During this time, hillpoint did the smart thing and expanded to 9’s main like a good toss should. While attacking and pressuring, the best thing to do, especially vs a terran, is expand. So you keep them defensive and you take map. During that attack, Stendec also began a CC of his own to expand with. On equal money terms, there is NO race better than terran, I say. It’s when they get outresourced 2-1 that they are hurting.
During this time, hillpoint has been teching to those cloaked buttpirates we all love…DT’s. If I was cloaked, and I’m not, but if I was…would you wear clothes if you were invisible? I sure as hell wouldn’t…how many times you get to go somewhere butt-naked? I’d be flailing around like a newborn, baby. Um…back to the BR…DT’s!!! a slow or newer terran is usually dead at this point. A better terran usually has no bother with them aside from the contain. Now, both races have their first exp’s online and are Maynarding their peons when a lil’ something funny happens that Cows and I notice. The probes from 6’s main heading to 9’s main and the vultures of Stendec are on paths that collide at about the halfway point between he two naturals at 9. My giggling of anticipation starts…as I know what’s gonna happen. PEON RAPE!!!! 6-8 probes lost their lives that day…it was sad…did it change the outcome? No, not really. But it DID give me a chance to scream ‘PEON RAPE’. So that’s cool…Cows begged me to SS it, but my SS’s never get loaded onto BR.com right. So you prolly won’t see it. =P
Allow me to break from the action to add to the lessons of the game so far. One, DT’s are still gay. Gay gay gay gay gay. Two, an efficient and expedient terran is a good terran usually. Micro or not, speed is the essence early on. Three, hard techs after rushes CAN work, but it may leave you lacking in the containment part of the game. And that is key vs. terran. Holding THEM back. Hillpoints suicide rushes and then DT only approach may cost him. DTs alone suck, DTs as support firepower are good.
Okay, back to the action. Note: while Stendecs cc was floating to his expansion, he started the construction of 2 more factories. This is a smart move because when the cc gets going and you can support them, you’re not waiting on the factories to be built, they are just lit. hillpoint added 2 gates AFTER he had the nexus running. Bringing his total to 5. 5 gates vs 4 factories is not good if you ask me. Unless they’re stargates….but that’s another fagotous move altogether. (yes, ‘fagotous’ is a new word) Stendec’s scvs started two armories for upgrades as he moved another new CC to his tertiary at 3. That’s 3 bases to 2 now…not good for a toss vs a terran. The lesson I just went over, about the lack of containment for lack of units comes into play here. Stendec turret tanked his way to his tertiary securing it with NO resistance by hillpoint's toss. If he had those 5 or so goons and 5 or so zealots along with his DT’s and new zealots, he could have resisted if not stopped the expansion . but, as it was, his army was small and cute and cuddly while Stendec’s was getting bigger and bigger with huge guns and explosions and big pointy teeth.
Something I learned of Stendec is that he is a good macro player as well as showed signs of good micro as well. For knowing he has a resource advantage, instead of staying happy with it, he chose to build on it by expanding to 12’s natural mine as well. See, if you expand once, get an advantage, and then it gets killed, you lost your advantage and the opponent MAY have expanded while he did that, thus giving himself the advantage. If you press your advantage, expand when you don’t immediately need it, you may lose it or another, but you have extra thus giving you a back up plan. Sorta like your credit card is when you have $35 in best buy and see a new TV you want…mmm…TV….
During this time, toss has not been idle, however and has expanded to 6’s natural and 6’s tertiary. As far as tech updates go, Stendec has finally gotten vessel power and hillpoint is at templar, shuttle tech. Speaking of shuttle, 20 minutes into the game, and 4 terran bases later, hillpoint does a 2 goon drop on a TERRAN cliff!!! How ironic…it worked too…for about 1 minute and 9 seconds. Then the tanks came and reminded the robotic spiders that TERRAN WILL NOT BE OUTGAYED BY A DEAD ZEALOT IN A SPIDER SUIT!!! A psi drop would have been better. He LOSES the scvs, not mining time alone. But, that’s just me. I hate dropping altogether. I try to run people over with lings on island maps…maybe that’s why I die 9 outta 10 times on dire…also, the upgrade battle was being won all game by terran. His units were 1/1 while toss was 0/0/1. By the end of the game, it was 2/3 to 1/0/2. UPG’s are huge too, ppl.
Basically, all we’ve seen was some bickering of small attacks, but now it was time for the fit to hit the shan. Terran decided, he’s got map control and upgrades now with vessel support, it’s time to jam. At this time, terran has been lighting ten factories non-stop while toss has been producing out of nine gates (he coulda supported 15+). Some nice battles in the middle occurred that displayed the might of the templar.
A much larger terran force of tank/gol/vulture lost to a much smaller one of goon/zealot/temp because of nice storming. Tanks tend to group while attacking unsieged and paid the price for it. If toss had been macroing well, he’d have held up nicely. But Terran’s attack kept coming wave after wave. During this barage, Stendec laid some nice spider mine traps for toss. he’d be attacking a nexus at toss’ tertiary at 6 while running the vultures into the choke and laying minefields. This was brilliant for it didn’t allow reinforcements to get there fresh and all pissed off. Consequently, allowing him to tear down expansion after expansion. All game, mines were laid not so much in abundance, but in patterns that would surely hit SOME units at any time. Nothing sucks worse than 5 mines going off on one zealot. But, this was a tactic of an obviously good terran. Rather than lay a minefield in one spot, then get flanked from the other direction, he made sure most alleyways of attacks were met with some resistance.
Stendec took down the 2 expansions at 6 and then split his forces to tend to 9 as well as the rest of 6. Also, this was smart as well. Gateways were still producing at 6’s main base, and rather than get pincered on the way to 9’s base, he left a small militant group of hick Terrans in mech suits to deal with any units coming out of 6. The brunt of the terran army filtered into the 9 bases and took them down one by one w/o a ton of resistance. There were a large number of temps there but throughout the game, it became quite clear to my fellow observer and I that hillpoint’s temp control was less than extraordinary. Frankly, it was just plain bad. In a stunning AI move, though, a mine was laid by templars and went streaking towards one of the blurring whores when a DT just swiped it out of the air. It was focused on the templar and the DT didn’t take kindly to it…maybe they were gay or something.
Endgame: hillpoint made a stunning bnetter move by…you guessed it!! Making excuses. “I haven’t played in a while” “you guys said out loud I couldn’t macro” and all that BS. We DID accidentally slip and say he couldn’t macro…but that doesn’t change the fact that he didn’t. it shoulda benefited him more than Stendec. Anyway, sorry bout that. Obs mistake. Die.
Endscores: Stendec a lot, hillpiont considerably less.
Lessons learned and to be learned: terran are hard to play and harder to beat. NO race is harder to uproot than a terran. They are “dug in like an Alabama tick”. Anyone get that quote? Arnie movie…If you are a good terran, you are a good player. Stendec not only played smart, but he played non-stop and spent money well. Terran is THE hardest race to macro with. I always have like, 20000000 sitting at all times with them. I thought 3 rax off of 4 running bases was good….guess not. A key to terran attacking is using your forces in FULL force and splitting forces effectively. Stendec was rarely attacking one place at one time. That’s good especially with the AI telling you are under attack and NOT WHERE you are under attack. Also, if you can expand, do it. You may not get another chance to do it later. Don’t worry bout getting it all setup before you even move there, just make a cc and float it there, terran are the only race that can permanently save a building for later. So if you get busted, just lift it and wait for another chance. But by God, expand with them. Also, the key as toss vs. terran is NOT letting them get the middle. If they can cut your forces in two with the brunt of theirs, you are screwed.
A big thx to the players for letting me obs and a big GW to hillpoint to not resorting to carriers. If you go carriers vs terran, u essentially are the loser. Now, if they sit all day in their choke, do what you got to do. But if they are offensive, honor the battle and be un-gay to your fellow bnetters. =) course, if they cliffseige you, all bets are off. =)
Take care and God bless,
