I started out with a pool on eight, another remade my eighth drone, made an ol, an extractor, and six lings. I put three probes on gas, hoping fast mutas might catch him with little anti-air. I sent my lings into his base only to discover he had no gateway, a forge, and four or five photons warping in around his base and probe line. I decided to save my lings for another day and brought them bak to my choke, leaving one at his. I went to lair as soon as I could and expanded to my gas only natural. I continued to pump drones, ols, lings here and there, and made a sunken. Expecting a drop of somekind, seeing his tech heavy build, I through down an evo chamber and two spores near my probes, and also researched the carapace upgrade. When my lair was done I slapped down a spire and researched the ol transport upgrade.
As soon as my spire was finished, I quickly made five mutas and sent them towards the rear of his mineral line. En route I encounteres him forming en expansion, with a nexus and about five photons warping in. I killed the warping photons and he canceled the nexus. I sent a few lings to dispatch the pylon, placed a ling at each land expansion, and an ol at each island. I continued the mutas on to his mineral line and ran them past photon fire into a haven over his mineral line. I killed four or so probes before he ran them off and started walking cannons to wards the mutas. I ran them back to my base.
Planning to capitalize on my momentary victories I expanded twice, to the gas and min island at my left and a mineral only expansion to my right. Frowning as I waited for a drop or offensive move of some kind from my opponent, I put down an evo chamber, researched the carapace upgrade, and put spores down around my mineral lines. I made a queen's nest, not only looking to get queens, but also to get gaurdians to crack all his photons. When my first set of wueens were done I went and parasited everything I could see. Of course, I felt like an idiot when I saw my gaurdian fleet and his 8 carriers, four starports, fleet beacon, and lone island expansion. I hurriedly made twodefilers nests so I could research consume and plague at the same time and put hydra, muta, and scourge production into ovetime. As soon as I got a defiler I consumed three lings and loaded him in an ol. My parasites revealed that he had about twelve carriers and two arbiters bunched together in a corner of his base. "Bad move" I thought. I unloaded my defiler and two lings. Hurriedly I ran the defiler up to the carriers, plagued, saw that I didnt get them all, consumed the lings, and plagued again at the last second right before the interceptors tore the defiler apart.
"Nice move" he said. At this point I saw four scouts jooin the carrier and arbiter fleet and the doomfleet moved out towards my first expansion, a gas only. The interceptors began pounding away on the expansion. I sent eighteen scourge in groups of threes at the carriers, but only got one or two, as he was very good at microing to kill the scourges. I plagued again to reveal the carriers and darkswarmed my group of eight hydras. He moved his carriers out of range though, and killed my defiler quickly. The swarm subsided and my hydras were butchered. The carriers moved towards my island expansion. Taking a gamble, I burrowed a dozen hydras at the northern end of the island, about where the carriers would stop to bombard my spore colonies. When the carriers stoped and launched their interceptors, my defiler popped up and darkswarmed where my hydras were burrowed. THey popped up and began pounding the lague weakened carriers. While the carriers were busy, I again launched scourge. They were more successful this time, getting several carriers. THe hydras got a few more before being killed. With only four or so carriers and two scouts left, most with heavily depleted shields and no hitpoints, I sent in a flight of 18 mutas to mop up.
By now my main was dry, and I only had two expansions remaining, one gas only, and one mineral only. However, I had eighteen mutas morphing in eggs, eighteen scourge left over, and my old gaurdian fleet. I began moving towards his main and sole island expansion, killing an observer on the way. "That's nice," he said, "but I've got twelve more carriers."
"If you do," I said, "with only one expansion and your natural, you hacked." "No I didn't" he said, and he was right, because I saw he had only five carriers half loaded, and this time no arbiter or scout support. I killed them with scourge and mutas. "I'm outa money," he said, "so I'll either surrender or you can give me an allied victory." Feeling good and acknowledging that it had been a good match, I gave him the allied victory.
LESSONS LEARNED
-If a guy cannons in and produces no units, he's probably going for carriers. Capitalize on this by deniying him every last mineral you can while you prepare tanks, gaurdians, carriers, or reavers of your own until you can break his cannon field. Carriers are expensive as hell, and he'll need lots of money.
-Scourge are effective only if the opponent is too distracted to micro and destroy them.
-Plague is very effective against carriers, since they have a lot more hitpoints than shield points.
-Be sure you can walk darkswarms up to him. One darkswarm isn't much good on defense, he'll just move back and wait.
-Carriers are not unstoppable.
I had screen shots, but all are 250k plus and the limit is 50k. Why are my screen shots so large? Somebody please help me out. |
