Introduction

Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight I bring you a match between the ever illustrious Montaro, and IN^Turbid. Some of you may know Monty from his website Montaro.org, also known as “Home of the Great One”. Turbid’s main qualification is that he is a member of the IN clan, and therefore, one supposes, has at least some small amount of skill. =] Monty isn’t very polite when Turbid first joins and asks for the game, but eventually comes around and agrees to play at the magic phrase:”I’ll report” The match took place on Lost Temple. I refuse to provide a minimap on general principle.

Never give a sucker an even break

Both players elect to random. Monty draws yellow protoss and the bottom position, Turbid gets purple terran in the top. After seeing his race, Turbid isn’t above doing a little trash talking of his own. As both opponents proceed with their game, one odd occurrence stands out. Turbid elects to scout with a SCV, but goes directly from the top to the bottom. Monty does the more traditional clockwise scouting path, managing to sneak a probe into the terran base just before Turbid starts the second depot of his wall in. The players build orders look like this:

Turbid: depot, rax, gas, depot, command center, factory. Yup, our intrepid IN member goes with an early expansion. A rather bold move at this level of play…

Monty: pylon, double gateway, pylon, gas, pylon, core. Monty decides to get two zealots and chase around the SCV annoying his base, gets the singularity charge upgrade, and starts cranking goons.

So let’s see some action!

Monty takes the offensive first, sending his first two zealots and two dragoons to attack the terran player. The early expansion has delayed Turbid’s factories and he defends with only three marines. Realizing his troops will be in range of Monty’s goons if he attacks, he moves his marines back while Monty takes down the front two depots. A tank and a vulture pop out as Monty moves to attack, but Monty’s forces are joined by another two dragoons marching in. The zealots fall as Turbid concentrates fire on them, but as the second one falls Monty has eliminated all but the one tank. Luckily for Turbid, he has maynarded some SCVs to his natural and Monty did not find the expansion.

The last tank also falls just as it reached the SCV line where it was to be repaired. With no conventional troops left, Turbid uses the age old attack of terran players vs goons when things go bad and assaults with his SCVs. In a rather clever move, the terran SCVs attack in two groups, one from the front, and one circles around the factories to take the goons from the back. This prevents the goons from dancing and they kill only about six SCVs before being dispatched. Monty had felt the game was over up until his goons went down, and he had sent his probes along with his next two dragoons to finish off the hapless terran. After the goon soup was served, the probes ran back to the toss main, a little more respect in their robotic little hearts for their terran brethren.

Now that’s gotta be a bad sign

Monty decided to press his advantage and keep up the attack. A steady stream of troops poured from his gateways. The next two goons managed to engage and destroy a tank fresh off the production line. A vulture and two marines used the high ground to kill one and force the other back. Turbid began production on a third factory and a third command center. That boy surely loved his command centers…. The next wave of goons brought Monty’s troop count up to four, and he attacked the ramp leading up to the terran base. A vulture and two marines died before a new tank popped out and Turbid brought his SCVs from his natural in to attack. The tank fell at the same time that two dragoons succumbed to the fusion cutters of the SCVs, prompting Monty to retreat his goons a little ways.

Two more dragoons reinforced the two remaining ones. They attacked toward the terran natural, killing two marines on the way. A vulture, marine, and a tank arrived on the scene just as the SCVs from the natural were once again called into combat. Monty backed off his troops after killing the tank and losing one goon.

Can you say”R-R-R-Reaver?”

But during all this time when Turbid is constantly having to pull his troops off mining to fight, Monty has been using his cash to buy the reaver tech tree. That decision pays off as he joins his three goons waiting outside the terran natural with another three goons and a reaver in a shuttle. The goons quickly run over the marine and vulture presence, then move up the ramp to the terran main for the kill. Turbid has pulled all his SCVs from his main off mining to repair the single tank he has left. As they all gather around to repair it…well, a picture is worth a thousand words… Almost like a mini nuke from one reaver scarab. Another tank pops out, but Monty is on the high ground now, and has the reaver along with goons. Turbid looks over the situation and his lack of workers, and concedes the game.

Good work Monty, and thanks to both players for an interesting game to watch.
