I log on, hoping to BR a great masterpiece from Brood War USA-1000. I happen upon the rare moments in this channel when more than 5 people are actually in it. After a couple minutes of mindless chatter, the game is on!

It’s a 2v2, on Lost Temple. J@ckFrost goes random and draws Zerg, along with his ally, Salvius, who chose it. The duo-terran’s RickNtStar and EdwardOden make up the other team, making this a (not-so) deadly ZZvTT…

The double Zerg elect to expand first, as the two terran players do the strangest build known to mankind. EdwardOden goes for a gas on the 5th SCV, and a depot after that. My fellow observer is quick to explain the newbie-hood.

RickNtStar makes a barracks, depot, barracks, depot in that order, leaving the buildings spaced apart just so that defending them all would be quite a hassle. First blood is drawn when J@ckFrost gets too nosy and send a ling to scout RickNtStar. The resulting bloodshed is horrendous.

Salvius, on the same nosy angle, elects to attack EdwardOden’s struggling wall-in of 3 depots tragically placed BELOW the ramp. When the one zergling manages to take the building into red before dying to marine fire, and EdwardOden elects NOT to repair it, I quickly smack my hand into my forehead. The depot burns to the ground…

J@ckFrost, getting a little too aggressive, builds an expansion right below RickNtStar’s main. It gets mauled by marines, and J@ckFrost’s unsuccesful counter on RickNtStar’s expansion dies. RickNtStar, feeling frisky with his wonderful combo of 25 marines and no medics, decides to attack Salvius’ expansion head-on. With minimal zergling losses, the attack is repelled by the support of 3 sunkens.

A few moments pass, and all is quiet. Everyone has expanded to their natural, with J@ckFrost getting aggressive and taking a mineral-only expansion. Scanning over their bases, I notice something of peculiar interest. EdwardOden has 7 SCV’s on one Refinery… I make a note of it to my fellow observer, and he promptly says, “newbie.”

If you think one stupid wall-in is enough for EdwardOden, you’re wrong! He builds another outside his natural, confident no Zerg beasts can’t get in. J@ckFrost goes straight for ultras, along with Salvius, and J@ckFrost attacks RickNtStar and his marine armada. They die pitifully, and the game is sealed. Wraiths shoot valiantly at the attack force, but to no avail. RickNtStar is forced to lift off.

The same fate falls to EdwardOden, who thought he was safe behind his wall-in. Unbeknownst to him, human players do not direct their units to slam into the wall and walk about getting killed like computer ones. His base is razed in minutes, and the two floating command centers make vain efforts to land and rebuild. Scourages spell disaster for the floating command centers, and GG’s are exchanged.

Game goes to the double Zerg team, J@ckFrost and Salvius. Well played.

Lessons Learned

1. Don’t go gas on 5th SCV.

2. Wall-in is great, just do it on high ground.
