After cruising chan nohunters for a while, I discovered an epic dance about to commence. Ioti and Phoenix-S- were in the full swing of asking people for a 1v1, and so with not 1 but 2 people asking for a 1v1 in the same channel, their paths were destined to cross. Phoenix may have said that Ioti was a hacker, and so he knew where to be so that their paths would cross, but that is immaterial. By the way, this game is played on regular SC, not BW, so there are none of those funny looking units.

Round One

Zerg Have No Sense of Casualty

Map: Dire Straits

Players:

Ioti - Bottom Left - Protoss
Phoenix-S- - Top Left - Zerg

Game 1 (which later turned into a 3 game series) opened with Phoenix-S- sending his OL south, proving his truly gosu instincts. Both players use fairly traditional builds, with Phoenix-S- going 11 hatch gas pool in rapid succession, and Ioti going gas pylon gate core. Soon after he adds another gate and pylon, and in due time his core is finished. However, here the players diverge from regular tactics. Ioti does not immediately build a robotics factory, or even a citadel, but instead proceeds to build ground troops. Phoenix-S- on the other hand builds a lair quickly, and he appears to be going air, but soon his true goals of hydra drop become apparent with the morphing of a 2nd lair and a den.

At this point, Phoenix-S-'s OL has made it to Ioti, and both players discover their counterparts race. Phoenix-S- is somewhat intrigued by the snazzy protoss base in front of him, and reminds Ioti that there are no corsairs in vanilla. Here we find Ioti's impressive knowledge of SC in general, when he exclaims damn! Thats what I was going for! So, instead of saving his gas for sairs, he spends it on a 15 or so unit army of goons and zealots. These prove to be useful in the upcoming battle.

About now Phoenix-S- has filled 5 OL's with hydras, and is sending them down to Ioti's base. They arrive, and land, and although Ioti's forces are spread apart, the hydras are not match enough to take Ioti's army. However, the slithering beasts do manage to deplete Ioti's army to 4 goons and 1 zealot.

At first things look good for Phoenix-S-, but the tides of war change.

Soon, nothing more than a stain is left on the protoss island.

The 5 OL's flee the premises, and Ioti builds a citadel of adun, undoubtedly heading for templar, now that he knows what Phoenix-S- strategy is. Also in this time he gets a robotics fac and a shuttle, and flies a probe to the island to the northeast of his main. Once there is warps in 2 pylons and 2 cannons, along with 4 goons.

Ioti's expansion is well fortified from any drop attack.

Soon after a nexus has arrived, but very few probes are warped, as the majority of the resources are sent towards another good size ground army in his base.

The bulk of Ioti's army at his main.

Phoenix-S- decides as well that this would be a good time to expand, and does so nearly nude on the island to the southeast of his main. He sends 2 hydras for protection, but before the hatch can complete, Ioti sends a shuttle with 2 goons to kill the place. 1 goon dies, but the other manages to kill the exp. Phoenix-S- decides to take revenge in a big way, with a 20 hydra drop on Ioti's main.

As before, the protoss forces are spread apart, and have very little luck in repelling the attack. This advantage continues, as Ioti has used most of his resources to expand, but has not received the economic benefit of doing so yet. Hence, he does not have enough to do any damage. He has 2 templar, but they were just warped in and do not have enough energy to storm. 1 is killed immediately, and the other tries frantically to flee, but is cut down by a flurry of needle sharp organic javelins.

This templar, aka Thelma, runs for it, as her companion Louise was recently slain by the man. (Phoenix-S-)

After the last 2 temps go down, Ioti realizes there is little hope for him, and he surrenders to the might of Phoenix-S-.

The razing of the metropolis is completed, with the Dire Straits running blue with Protoss blood.

GG's are exchanged, and everyone meets back in the channel with Ioti quickly asking for a rematch, and a 3rd game after that. The 2nd game will shortly be BR'd, as soon as I can sort through my screens, and the 3rd as well, as soon as I watch it >). Cheers to a match well fought by both combatants.

Lessons Learned:

1) Templar are needed quickly to thump a zerg on island maps. Any map actually...
2) Keep your forces in one big lump, not all over the place. It just doesn't work if you don't.

Til next time,
