2 out of 3 with Grimling

Intro:

It was another one of those lazy Sundays when I decided to stroll into channel NoHunters. I didn't really feel like playing today, so I sat idle for a few minutes until grimling announced openly: "1v1 temple, opponent and BRer needed".

Because of my lack of experience reporting, I decided to do a report and observe. I took out a pen and a pad, joined grim/ling, and as soon as his opponent: PsychoticSCV showed up, and I downloaded the map, the game began. As this was my first battlereport, I tried hard to concentrate on the game.

Round 1:
Grimling picked zerg and spawned at the 6:00 spot.
PsychoticSCV randomed Terran and landed his command center at the 9:00 position

Grimling started with a 12 hatch expand to his natural while he scouts with his overlord, and finds SCV the first place his overlord flies over. Fearful of marines, grimling wisely flies his overlord back to his base. Meanwhile, the terran put up supply depots and a barracks with a bunker behind it to protect his economy.

Grimling has his expansion up and another hatchery morphing at his base. He starts up his lair as blue's scv finds him and gathers valuable recon info before going up in smoke. Seeing sunkens guarding his expansion and base, blue then moves for tanks, constantly pumping M&M out of his 3 barracks. Teal upgrades speed for lings, and pumps muta/ling out of his 3 hatcheries. As soon as SCV has two tanks, he moves for a push, having 2 tanks, 12 marines and a few medics.

Blue sieges in front of teal's sunkens and one of them goes down. At the same time, teal moves in with a strange force towards blue's economy: about 6 mutas backed up by... 2 slow overlords. What was in them I was unaware of, but i assumed he had upgraded transport and was dropping lings. I was never to know what was in them as they both went up in a cloud of blood as blue had forseen the muta attack and built a series of turrets protecting his money. His attack was repelled at the cost of a few SCVs. Meanwhile, back at the zerg's base, grimling waited till he heard the sound of siege tanks converting to their more mobile mode, and then struck with a force of mutas and lings, manually targeting them as seen here.

Teal finishes off the offensive

Teal was then ready for a counter. Enraged that he had lost many lings to such a small force angered him and he stormed up blue's ramp. Guarded only by a small force of M&M (marines and medics), blue's base was overtaken by the zerg swarm.

THE SWARM!

Round 2:
PsychoticSCV was dismayed at his loss and demanded a rematch. A match was set up, and another observer was added to the list.Temple was the map once again.

Grimling once again chose the zerg brood and ended up again at the 6:00 position.
SCV randomed to the mighty protoss at the 12:00 position.

The zerg started out by scouting with his overlord, and did another 12 hatch, this time placing it next to his original hatch, increasing mineral gathering speed. Toss built a pylon at his choke, started scouting with a peon, and warped in two gates from Aiur at 9 and 11.

Grimling decides to double hatch hydra and starts pumping once his economy is up and his den is morphed. I began to doubt this tactic, as he is known to be more effective with his muta/ling. Orange continues to get zealots and then gets gas and a cyber core. He gets a few goons and then strangely builds pylons around his perimeter. He begins to warp a few cannons onto his ramp when the zerg brood decides to attack. Due to the lack of recon and his experience with Grimling's zerg tactics, SCV does poor unit management and holds position on his ramp, assuming Grimling's first assault would be with lings and not hydras. This mistake not only led to SCV's loss, but also left the game on a high note. Both the other observer and myself let out a silent chuckle as we saw the zealots standing there, paying no attention to the needle spines slowly destroying them. Blue sent another wave of hydras, therefore ending his opponent.

Orange's defense cant hold the swarm back.

Bye, Bye, Probes

Lessons Learned:

  • RECON IS EVERYTHING: In the first game, if SCV had known how big Grimling's army was, he might have put up a few bunkers, saving himself. In the second game, he assumed Grimling was going muta/ling and held position with the zealots... big mistake.
  • Slow overlords suck ass: I dont know whether Grimling moved those overlords in on accident or not, but a slow overlord transporting cargo is like a reaver with no scarabs.
  • Lastly, if anyone wants to start writing battlereports and have no clue where to start, as I did, it is a MUST to visit the reporting guides on this site. Also, if you dont know html, there is a guide for that too, including all the basics, in the reporting guides.

Thanx for reading my first BR. PLEASE WRITE COMMENTS, its the only way I'll learn.
