Thus us my first battle Report, but I hope you find it interesting. The map was BGH or some variation of it, and we were playing a 3 vs 3. It was me (protoss) at middle left, sewwer (zerg) at lower left, and o12kpnamja (zerg) at middle right versus: SurfCharleston (protoss) middle top, BeerStud-T (terran) at middle bottom, and shadowcon231 (zerg) at lower right. It was a no rush game with a limit of 15 minutes.
From the start it looked easy, 15 minutes was a lot of time to build up and our opponents looked like newbies. I built up my base, making a few dragoon and zealots and making sure to pump out tons of probes to get enough resources. I went for reavers and by this time had built 2 gateways and 2 robotic centers to make reavers. I also expanded to the resource patch to my right and had built several cannons for defense. With 15 minute of no attacking on, it was pretty quiet for the beginning of the game. I had built about 6 reavers and 6 zealots and dragoons and was going for carriers. Sewwer had expanded to the resource patch directly above him and o12 (I hate names that are hard to pronounce) had expanded to the resource patch directly to his left. I went for carriers and built my second carrier, when decided to expand to the upper right corner, which was empty. I had scouted out my enemy with some observers. I had my probe start to build a nexus when beer stud came in with 10 or so marine and blasted my expansion. It was dumb to try to create one without some defense, but I was pissed at beerstud for attacking it. This was also about the limit of the 15 minute no rush period. So i told my allies to attack beer stud. I had a good amount of reavers, and some dragoons and zealots and about 2 carriers. Sewwer was making mutas and some guardians and I;m not sure what o12 had, mostly a mix of hydras and mutas and zerglings. The next thing I knew there was a huge mass of yellow in o12’s base and he was swearing, I looked over and shadowicon231 was attacking with like 50 hydras. Things looked bad for 012. I sent over my zealots and dragoons and reavers (though they were too slow) and the few carriers I had. luckily sewwer had a ton of mutas and we managed to wipe out shadowicon’s attack force.
Shadowicon231 had tried the standard strategy of building lots of weenie guys and mass attacking, I have seen it work many times against an ill defended player, but luckily we were prepared. We immediately counter attacked and hit shadowicon231 with my reavers, carriers, the few remaining dragoons and zealots and sewwer’s mutas. O12 outer defenses were smashed but he wasn’t dead yet. Shadowicon231 has been doing entirely hydras and had very little defense left, we swept through his base and I finished him off with my reavers. However he managed to escape with some drones and flee up toward SurfCharleston’s base. We then decided to wipe out Beerstud who being a terran had done a good job of bunkering himself in. Of course excessive turtling only leads to defeat, but he still had lots of turrets, bunkers and tanks for defense.
I had researched arbiters by this point, and had been pumping carriers out of my 3 stargates so i attacked with my 7 reavers and 6 carriers all cloaked with an arbiter. O12 helped by attacking with hydras and sewwer had lots of mutas and some guardians. It was a bit of a stiff fight with turrets and bunkers damaging my carriers (of course my arbiter had to flee before it was destroyed), but with that kind of forces we managed to prevail pretty easily. My reavers destroyed his bunkers and o12’s hydras and sewwers mutas finished off the rest. I left some reavers to finish off the job, but Beerstud still had his expansion in the north east corner.
It was basically turning into a north versus south war. It probably would have been easier if we had expanded into the two southern bases, but we didn’t. I wasn’t running out of resources yet. Things were calm as we built up after our attack and SurfCharleston bided his time. The calm ended soon enough, SurfCharleston had expanded to the north western corner and attacked my base from the top with about 6 carriers and an arbiter. I was worried he was wrecking my stargates and pylons, but I sent up my 5 or so carriers to fight. The problem was that SurfCharleston had built 3 cannons on the south side of his base and they shot at the interceptors and a carriers so I thought I would lose. Luckily sewwer came in with his mutas, he really had built a ton by now, and smashed their attack. In many ways sewwer was the one who helped win this game, he has tons of mutas and guardians and proved decisive in many battles. Anyway we charged north destroying the three cannons and killing his peons mining at the nearby nexus. It was a relatively small expansion and easy to kill.
The rest of SurfCharleston’s base wouldn’t be so easy to kill though. he had built lots of cannons in the southern border of his base, and I invaded with more reavers i had pumped out, a long with more of o12’s hydras. SurfCharleston responded with psi attacks with caused us to retreat. The battle raged back and both on the little bridge south of the top middle base. O12 had made some ultralisks and we charged back but SurfCharleston was very good at using his templar and arbiters to his advantage. He would attack with cloaked carriers and then cast stasis field on my reavers and carriers incapacitating them. Then he would attack with my remaining units with his carriers. The problem was that he was essentially fighting a 3 vs 1 war and we could out produce him. Shadowicon231 did escape and built a hive near a research patch, but he could hardly build anything cause he kept complaining about not having any gas, apparently SurfCharleston was using all the gas spots. BeerStud had turtled himself into the upper right corner. In the middle of the fighting he attack with marines and tanks which was annoying but I killed them with my reavers before they were stasis fielded. We attacked him upper right base with cloaked carriers and guardians and some reavers and crushed it easily. By this point BeerStud and Shadow icon were pretty much dead, they stayed on a while longer and then surrendered.
I responded by pumping out more carriers, reavers, and arbiters, and sewwer now had tons of mutas and guardians. O12 still basically had hydras, and zerglings and wasn’t a major factor in the game. I discovered the use of stasis field and built up my carrier fleet, and arbiters. SurfCharleston attacked O12’s base again and i responded by destroying his arbiter and then using mine to stasis his carriers. I found that if I couldn’t kill his carriers i could at least stasis them, and keep them out of the action. I continued to build up my carriers and it was pretty much over for SurfCharleston. I came in with my carriers from the upper left and attacked while sewwer attacked with his of guardians and mutas. I also invaded upwards with some reavers, and O12 sent in his hydras but it was really sewwer who pounded SurfCharleston’s base. I fought SurfCharleston’s carriers with my 12 or so, but I was being shot at by cannons for a while so after I very long fight they lost, with like 2 of his carriers surviving. However the battle between so many carriers took a while and by that point sewwer’s mutas and to a small extent my reavers and O12’s hydras has razed SurfCharleston’s base. Even with a carrier or two left he was dead soon. That’s why i wasn’t really worried about fighting his carriers, I had also run out of arbiters or I would have just frozen them. My one mistake was to forget to research recall so I couldn’t do a reaver drop as soon as I would have liked, actually my arbiter died right before it was going to recall, which sucked but SurfCharleston was dead anyway.
We all said good game, SurfCharleston was a very good opponent, good use of templar and arbiters and good at expanding. If he hadn’t had such bad opponents he would have done better. Shadowicon never even expanded which is just dumb. Beer stud did the typic terran bunkering which was bad too. But it was a very hard fight to finally kill SurfCharleston, of course stasis fielding his carriers helped a lot. In the final stats sewwer actually did better than me, he built more units and gathered more resources, without him i would have been in trouble several times.
I guess that’s all. I learned how to use arbiters to really change the tide of a battle, their cloaking is useful, but stasis and recall is even more so. And again zerg can be very good when they get tons of mutas and guardians. And though massing tons of units works, you need to do it faster, and you have to expand. I hope you enjoyed this report, it was a long satisfying game for me. Sorry for the lack of screenshots I was too busy playing. And excuse me if it is too dry, but I wanted to tell it like it was. |
