Bloodshed at Ground Zero
Starring: |
[z]Aegio AND HornyPervert
VERSUS
-NeoBiE- AND Raven~Sol-|FE|
The battle lines were drawn for intergalactic warfare. Four space warriors came together as good friends, and like all good friends should, they sought to tear each other limb for limb. I had the great, immense, extreme, unbelievable pleasure to observe this game, hoping very sincerely that the game would be half decent so I could actually do something productive with it, and half decent it would turn out to be before the last drop of blood was shed. It was to be a war of clan versus clan, even if two of the four contestants were not on their clan names, you have to trust me on this one, it was Zero versus Forgotten Exiles. Who would uphold their clans pride, dignity, and honor, and who would go off with the great regret that they lost for the rest of their lives? Okay, maybe that is being a little overdramatic… anyways, let me present to you at this time…
The Map: Party at Ground Zero

After a couple minutes of sitting in the game room, making dumb jokes and having someone go afk for a little while right after the last person who just went afk for a little while came back, the game finally started up. [z]Aegio spawned red Zerg in the upper right hand corner of the map, while his partner HornyPervert got blue Zerg in the upper left hand corner. Looked like the mighty Zero warriors would both be controlling the savage, heartless broods during this game- the Exiles better hope they have some good anti-Zerg tactics up their sleeves. Speaking of the Exiles, Raven~Sol-|FE| received the terrible Terrans (or at least I’m terrible with them.) at the middle right start location, right below [z]Aegio, while his partner in this soon to be epic battle, -NeoBiE-, found himself controlling the honorable forces of the Protoss warriors, from the lower left sector of the map. Since this was not an observor map, I chose Terran, ended up in the lower right hand corner, and followed the gosu observor strat of floating my command center over an out of the way ledge that no one would care about.
On the Zero side, HornyPervert opted to get a second hatchery at his base right off the bat, waiting for a spawning pool until the second hatchery was fairly underway. Looked like mass cracklings to me, which would be proven right later on. [z]Aegio on the other hand went for a build that was in a bit of contrast to the one his partner followed, going for an eight pool, three sunken colonies, and a little while later a second hatchery. (I can never get over the name hatchery: there are fish hatcheries all over where I grew up, and I always picture those.) Meanwhile, on the Exile side, -NeoBiE- was following a standard Protoss build of pylon, gateway, gateway, pylon, while his partner Raven~Sol-|FE| was beginning to get the mighty Terran war machine rolling with a barracks, depot, barracks build.
Both sides would soon scout each other out, and so everyone now knew the status of their enemies. It wasn’t long after this initial scouting until my mass ling prediction about HornyPervert came true. A tsunami of blue critters raced across the map in a freakish sort of marathon to the lands south of HornyPervert, where the finish line was apparently in the minerals of -NeoBiE-. -NeoBiE- only had about four zealots, and had recently finished his core, with the first goon popping out right as the lings hit. The odds didn’t look good at first glance, but -NeoBiE- proved that a few zealots, a goon, and some microed probes could lay this particular zergling attack to waste, drenching the galatic landscape with blood.

With his successful defense, -NeoBiE- sent his probes back to the joys of mining minerals and being prime targets for the evil Zerg. By this time everyone was getting gas, and both of the Zerg players were getting up hydralisk dens. Meanwhile, Raven~Sol-|FE| had gotten up a couple more barracks, and it looked like he was preparing to go a hardcore M&M offensive. -NeoBiE-, although he survived, was now poorly defended should HornyPervert decide to take his zerglings on another field trip into -NeoBiE-‘s base. And that is exactly what it looked like HornyPervert planned to do, for his zerglings once again started their mass exodus southwards, and he also took this time to start an expansion to his lower right, a mineral only one… but wait a minute, what are all of those teal units moving northward on the minimap at the same time?

Raven~Sol-|FE| starts to tear away at [z]Aegio, at first assaulting a creep colony, but realizing that there are many in the center, but not any at the perimeters, he wisely pulls back and starts punishing [z]Aegio from the edges of his base. By this time, [z]Aegio has almost completed morphing his hatchery into a lair, but that is not going to be too beneficial for him right now, as Raven~Sol-|FE| is devastating his base with well managed attacks around the outskirts of the creep that [z]Aegio’s hydralisks can’t quite seem to handle.
Things are looking good for the exiles at the moment… but remember those lings that HornyPervert sent out? They were just about to go into -NeoBiE-‘s base when this whole fiasco started, but realizing that Raven~Sol-|FE| must have had all of his forces away making [z]Aegio’s life a living nightmare, HornyPervert changes the course of his lings, and I watch as the turn sharply towards the east, on their way to counter attack Raven~Sol-|FE|. As the first lings whirl into Raven~Sol-|FE|’s base with the strength of a tornado, the poor Terrans that were left at home are able to offer up very little resistance, and the great force of the evil Zerg soon forces Raven~Sol-|FE| to lift off what he can. -NeoBiE- responds quickly and sends what he can to try to defend Raven~Sol-|FE|, but unfortuantly for the Exiles, -NeoBiE- was still gathering his bearings from the first ling attack, and did not have enough troops to destroy this second batch of zerglings.
The attack launched on [z]Aegio had meanwhile done great damage. A couple of creep colonies had been lost, as well as one of [z]Aegio’s hatcheries and his extractor, so now not only was his troop production cut in half, but his gas gathering had now been halted, which would make a lot more hydralisks pretty hard to come by. However, he is able to pump out a few more nonetheless, and finally luring the remaining infantry of Raven~Sol-|FE| inwards, he finally makes those creep colonies useful, effectively ending Raven~Sol-|FE|’s attack. Meanwhile, poor Raven, who had started to make a command center in the lower right corner during his initial attack as an expansion, now has to try to make this thing into a main base. Although both sides now have a player in bad shape, the Exiles are a good deal worse off, because mineral gathering was not interrupted, while Raven~Sol-|FE|’s obviously was.

-NeoBiE- starts putting up his robotics buildings as his partner is trying frantically to regain the grandeur of his once proud Terran army. Meanwhile HornyPervert decides it is a fine time to expand again, this time to the start location opposite of where Raven~Sol-|FE| once was. He also puts up a Queen’s Nest, and begins the mutation to Hive, where many dreaded horrors will then be at his finger tips to slaughter the Exiles. soon loads up a shuttle with a pair of reavers, which passes over a zergling from the Zero team, who start talking back and forth frantically in trying to figure out where the shuttle is going. Now this is where -NeoBiE- makes a mistake: if he had reaver dropped [z]Aegio in his mineral line at this point, then he would have been injured severly, since he was not still fully recovered, and it might have served to even the tables for the two teams. Instead, he drops the reavers off with Raven~Sol-|FE|, and sends the shuttle back to his base.
[z]Aegio then decides to expand into Raven~Sol-|FE|’s former main, but on the Exiles side, -NeoBiE- has not yet expanded, which is a serious mistake on his part. Things are pretty quiet, until [z]Aegio comes across Raven~Sol-|FE|, and then launches a massive hydra attack on him. Raven is still hurting from earlier, since all his scvs had been killed and he had to start over from scratch, and at this point there is really nothing he can do to defend himself; the reavers do not offer too much help in this defense. Lifting his command center again, he manages to get it to higher ground, but unfortunately for him [z]Aegio’s hydralisks can still reach it with an overlord spotter hanging over, since the width of the platform was narrow. Watching his command center go down in flames, all Raven has now is a supply depot stuck in a corner that [z]Aegio failed to notice earlier, thus demoting his status to that of spectator.
-NeoBiE- had finally started to get an expansion up in the lower middle area of the map, but it is too late as the hydralisks of [z]Aegio come storming through right as the Nexus was just about finished; -NeoBiE cancels it at the last instant. –NeoBiE- at this point launches a zealot/goon/reaver attack on HornyPervert, but the massive amounts of units at HornyPervert’s main crush this opposition without too many casualties. The hydralisk war machine of [z]Aegio is not to be stopped this game, and after some sprinkling of plague on -NeoBiE’s base complements of HornyPervert, [z]Aegio strikes in full force, and team Exiles, seeing that it is over, concedes, and team Zero ends up victorious.
In a final analysis, I would say that the reason the Exiles didn’t put up a better fight at the end was because the great blow that Raven~Sol-|FE| suffered really took the wind out of -NeoBiE’s sails, as was evident in dialogue after that point. Yet he is a good Starcraft player, and if I think if he realized that he still stood a chance because was also hurt badly, he might have played with more vigor and given Zero a run for their money while Raven got on his feet again. If there is one lesson that this game has, don’t give up no matter what the odds are against you, because a defeatist attitude ensures defeat and will eradicate any hopes that you may still have left. And just because I am in Zero as well doesn’t make this report biased in anyway because both of the Exiles and I were in the same clan before it fell apart and I joined Zero. What, I didn’t mention I was in Zero earlier? Well I am now. I respect the abilities of all the players that participated in this game, and I thank them for not making good on promises to shoot my command center out of the sky.
