hw2 (1148, 15-6 record)
VS
Johnny_Vegas (me.. 1050, 11-8 record)
Before this ladder match began, I saw his record and that he picked protoss, so I was a little apprehensive about choosing terran. I have been trashed by so many protoss players as terran already I was getting sick of it. But I was up for the challenge. I was just ending a weekend of NON-STOP starcraft so my skills were razor sharp.
He started bottom left, and I started bottom right. I began the game with a 1 barracks, academy build, engineering bay (feared dark temps), refinery with a bunker strategically placed to protect my peon line, with depots surrounding it. I scouted him and noticed a double gateway, cyber core, with gas being gathered as well.
Well I made a big mistake, that no terran can afford. He had started to offensive cannon me in, I didn't have my chokepoint scouted yet, and before I knew it there were 2 cannons and some more warping in. Also he had 3-4 zealots there defending the cannons.
Knowing it to be suicide to try and stop this force, and immediately found a spot to build a factory at the bottom of my base where he couldnt see it. The cannons started pounding on my barracks and supply depot in the meantime. I actually kept the barracks there to take a pounding so that the cannon would not change targets on my precious depot. I rebuilt a barracks in the top right of my base out of cannon range, and another depot to the south.
In preparation for my tank counter attack I filled a bunker full of 2 firebats and 2 marines, moved my brand new siege tank right next to the bunker, in perfect position to take the nearest cannons down.
hw2 said "Damn how did you get that tank so fast???"
He then ran in with 4 zealots to take out the tank. My firebats and marines in the bunker cut the zealots down before the tank was destroyed, I then repaired the tanks and destroyed the rest of his cannons (6 cannons 2 pylons maybe?)
hw2 lamented that strategic move, by saying "Wow all that money countered by one measly siege tank"
All I said was "haha".
Scanning his base I noticed he had a templar archive and also a couple of starports. I immediately expanded to my natural and got 2 starports, later making 3. Also I built an armory and started upgrading air attack. Comsating revealed a fleat beacon warping in, so I was like "oh crap! carriers". Also he had expanded to HIS natural as well. What I didn't know was that he had expanded to the top right base very early on, not sure when.
I tried dropping 3 tanks, some bats and marines before he had his air force assembled, but these were cut down by a zealot, psi storm combo. That was costly to me, I feared a mass attack without the support of my 3 tanks that just died.
Well the next big battle came when I comsatted again and noticed a carrier AND arbiter headed my way. I had a Sci Vessel with EMP at this point, so I did a suicide run to EMP the clustered carriers. I was successful, but my Sci vessel was killed. I had ammassed about 11 wraiths at this point with one air attack upgrade. Also I had 2 comsats (my 2 bases) with a good amount of energy. As the carriers approached I soared in with the wraiths, comsating his fleet right before I intercepted him. Comsatting revealed 2 observers, I killed one then another wasting another comsat in the process. (I wanted to make sure it didnt return to cloak just as I was about to kill it, thus killing many wraiths). Well I was waiting for the stasis to come, from the arb, but I must have hit it with my EMP blast or he just didnt have 100 energy yet, so my wraiths concentrated fire on the arbiter killing it quickly. I then made short work of the shieldless, slow moving carriers before they could fly back to safety. At that time I was wishing I had the TopGun soundtrack handy.. hehe. I am sure my wraith pilots enjoyed a few good brewski's after that lopsided victory.
Well I think I did a pitiful one drop ship drop in his town that failed to do any harm after that, but it kept him busy. Also I expanded to a mineral only exp at 3 oclock, and also noticed his expansion top right. I did some quick wraith raids on his 2 expansions, moving my wraiths to avoid the storm, and sending one in at a time to draw the psi storms as well. This worked well. His natural expansion had only 2 cannons, which I went right at with my 12 wraiths and just attacked. (Wraiths can kill cannons if you outnumber them like that). I ended up wiping out that expansion, and wounding a few carriers that came over to defend.
The next big attack came when he sent in like 6 carriers and another arbiter. Well I had like 15 wraiths at this point, maybe they where level 2 attack I dont know. I emped his fleet again, but NOT his arbiter. But this is the funny part. He had like 3 observers that I killed AGAIN with my wraiths, and then in desparation he stasised my wraiths, BUT that wraith taht he targeted must have moved closer to his fleet cause he stasised half of his own fleet, getting only 5-6 of my wraiths. Well I killed the arbiter then the 3 non-stasised carriers. Then I promptly ran over with my SCV's and built 4 turrets underneath him for good measure. This ended the 2nd carrier fleet. I took that opportunity to expand to the middle (killed an observer there with wraiths and sci vessel) and also to 2 other places on the map. I had a good resource advantage at this point. Nuke fans will love this next part.
After failing to kill the top right expansion with tanks and marines/medics (I did this a while back, forgot to mention..). I built some ghosts and a nuke and snuck the ghost around the back of his base targeting a cannon next to this nexus. Right before the nuke landed I EMPed the nexus. LOL Dead nexus! One ghost and a science vessel was able to accomplish what 4 tanks, many marines couldn't do. The game was won at that point. I had so much money I just sent wave after wave of marines at his main, even though they many died to cannons and storm. Eventually I EMPed a few templar and overran it. Also I took a screen shot of my 30+ ghosts razing his town! What a way to finish. Killed by mass ghosts.. ahahahaa I nuked his base like 4 times for good measure and the game was over.
hw2 kept saying "I can't believe you beat me! No terran has ever beat me!"
I was like "really?", and he said "I was the first terran to ever beat him on ladder"
Well that was enough to make my weekend. It also gave me new found faith in the terran race's ability to overcome the protoss "imbalance". And I tell you what. Winning this game was MUCH more satisfying and fun then when I am protoss. It took more skill to win as terran, but it was possible.
Lessons Learned
-Only Carrier counter with its salt is the EMP the fleet, comsat to kill observers, then kill carriers with a high number of wraiths (attack upgraded preferred). I am not sure but I think one of the fights he still had an observer but I beat him anyway, cause I had mucho wraiths.
-Offensive cannoning can set you back economically. He lost a lot of early game minerals doing that strat. Putting my tank next to a bunker with firebats in it is the only thing that saved my tank.
-Nukes rule. Ghosts do to. Notice I beat ALL his carriers without using lockdown once. I ended up getting lockdown very late and not using it.
-Wraiths DO beat carriers for cost. I told him later if he had made corsairs my wraiths would have been in trouble. Well not really cause I kept killing his observers.
Thoughts and comments welcomed. This was a great game, I hope to have more like it.
