I have been playing Starcraft for about one year and a half now, off and on. I'm adequate; I still lose when I don't attack or recon or expand or if I'm just plain stupid. This is my first report because I lag too much to be in anything more than 1vs1 and therefore haven't observed anyone play. It is a text report because I feel text reports offer more opportunity to be creative . . . or I have no screenshots, I haven't quite decided. Also, I still have no idea how I'm supposed to submit a report to BattleReports.com, like do I just use normal html? I figure if I cannot really screw this up.
The Game
The game commences after I win an easy big money game in a clan-recruiting channel. Had no idea it was a big money map, but it ended being it and I won with the cheap strategy of attack an offensive cannon attempt with a SCV and two marines. Yeah I know, I have bad manners. Huk huk ^^.
Since talking is not my forte, I find a public 1vs1 on Lost Temple. It is against a certain FlamingFame, apparently a new account as there were no stats. Suffice to say, I had no idea what lessons I would learn.
The game starts with myself choosing Terran and starting at 12. Meanwhile, FlamingFame spawns as chosen zerg at 9. I go with the basic block off at my choke, except I use two barracks and only one supply depot. I scout sort of late and my SCV is killed before it can enter the base, so I must wait until comsat for more recon. I get my comsat station as my factory completes and I begin two starports. My favorite strategy as terran versus zerg is hard infantry with science vessel support, couple with marine drops on expansions. This works remarkably well, as a lot of zerg do not defend new expansions well. As I scanned his base I saw a building spire. Noticing this I made a third barracks and placed some turrets around my minerals. I also noted a queen's nest and no hydra den. Furthermore a Hive was morphing so I figured I was in for either cracklings and mutas or a guardian attack.
Digressing a bit, I had lost a game earlier in the week to a quick guardian rush. I had expected a lurker drop since I was at 9 and the zerg was at 6 and I kind of sat on my laurels for a while and didn't comsat and was taken by surprise when my mineral protecting turrets were attacked by 6 guardians with devourer support. Nevertheless I lost the game, but as he gave me shared vision I realized that I could have one if I attacked instead of offensive bunkering outside his natural. He only had 4 sunkens, and with stim and medics I would have one. This was further confirmed when I tried to figure out how long a guardian rush would take but plying against the computer. Building very little defense I was soon mauled by marines and medics as my first 6 mutas were hatched.
Back to the game at hand, I was wary of an early muta attack. So I sent my small force (I didn't have much as the choke was blocked off) and it killed a couple lings and saw a hatchery at his natural and a morphing sunken that could not be killed before reinforcing zerglings attacked. I retreat my forces back to the mineral natural and move more marines and medics and now firebats there. I also built two turrets and a bunker and researched stimpak. As this went on I built some wraiths, researched cloaking and built a science station. I had also comsatted and thought his hive was complete, he hadn't started his greater spire. When my first tank was built out of my one factory he attack my minerals with about 6 mutalisks. Well, not my minerals, but the SCV's there and the defending turrets. Luckily, I had two wraiths with cloak and killed 4 mutas before they retreated, myself only losing one turret. I rallied my factory to my little offensive bunker attack and loaded a drop ship with 8 marines. Because of some mistake I didn't put any medics in. I sent this on a round about course to the south of his base, and expanded at the same time as I felt he was contained. I sent in my marine to attack his expansion and they were ripped apart by lurkers, so I retreated what I had left back to my bunker.
I began science vessel production, had irradiate and built some more wraiths. I might have also built a third starport, I forget. Tee hee. I also built an armory, which would eventually aid the production of a valkyrie or two and a goliath.
I scanned his base and found a place to drop my marines. I was gonna suicide his greater spire. As I was moving my dropship, he attacks my bunkering with guardians, devourers and cracklings. I stimmed up, cloaked and irradiated and only lost my tank. I also notice he had sunkened and spored up his natural pretty well, so I built some more tanks from my one factory, and built more infantry. Meanwhile my drop was going well, I killed his greater spire, queen's nest, hydralisk den and half of his spawning pool until zerglings killed me. I would have gone after his drones but he was almost mined out.
Since he only had a pool left, he kept attacking with swarms of cracklings, but stimpak took care of them. The only thing was I kept losing my tank. While these attacks occurred I built more science vessels and sent a wraith scouting for expands, where I feared FlamingFame might be rebuilding his tech tree. Luckily, this did not occur. Right after a crackling attack I dropped some marines and medics (remembered those gals this time) with the intent of taking out the spawning pool, which they accomplished nicely before being mauled by some crack-whore zerglings. I also thought of the great idea of doing a weak turbo newbie since he didn't seem to have drop capability so I did, but place my tank to close to the ledge and had to matrix it stop it from exploding in shards of metal and metal. He sent one last attack at my bunker, which all previous ones had failed to do anything but take out the one tank I kept sending there. This time I matrixed the tank and irradiated it which worked for a couple of seconds, but alas the tank died. But it didn't matter, I had the game won when suddenly, and surprisingly, FlamingFame was a flamer and disconnected.
The Chat
Ok, so he disconnected. That happens a lot. I should just let it go, but no I did not. I decided to keep /whois'ing until FlamingFame came back on. I was able to do this because I actually remembered the guy's name and could type it since it was a &^º][n&ane or anything weird like that. When he came back on I messaged him "Bad manners" and I entered the channel he was in. After he figured out I wasn't Korean we began talking. Apparently, he was frustrated with the imbalance of terran over zerg and protoss. I chided him for disconnecting, when he stated that he was just upset that terrans with the map hack own everything. I thought this was weird so I don't use a map hack. He explained that with the hack, terrans know where to comsat so it negates lurkers and dt's and allows terran to win easily. We went into in depth discussion about strategies, and how I can't beat toss as terran and can't be terran as toss. Heavy Metal ownz my bones, yet it never works for me. I explained my shortcomings, and he listened.
Then I inquired "Did you have a map hack?" His reply startled me, if you can be startled by some colored text on a monitor. He said, "Of course, everyone has it. I was taken aback. I believed only a relative few people used the hacks and that people were basically good. I mean who would find it fun to cheat to win? FlamingFame explained that everyone uses it and in order to win you need it, most times. It evens out the playing field, as you are at a disadvantage when you don't have one. I wondered how he lost with it, cus I thought the hack lets him see what I'm doing in my base. Like it's like the BlackSheepWall single-player cheat. Apparently, it only shows the minimap, or at least FlamingFame's did. I still don' know whether other hacks show more. We discussed a bit more and I decided to play him again, me as terran. I didn't care if he had the hack as I beat him before, except this time I knew he had the hack. Of course, this bit of knowledge harmed me more than it helped.
The Game II
This game was also on Temple. I was terran at 12 and he was toss at 3. I blocked off the choke and went heavy metal with two and then three factories, and at first 1 starport and then three. He seemed to power a bit first building a bunch of gateways. Meanwhile, I delayed my attack because I knew he could see my units coming. When I eventually did attack, after I had comsat, I was ripped apart en route by goons, zealots and a dt. This is where I basically lost the game, as I decided to wait till I had science vessels. By that time he had expanded to 6. I failed to scout because I figured he'd pick of my wraiths with his dragoon, since he could see it fly around.
I loaded up a drop ship with a tank and 2 vultures. He had been rallying his units near the temple so I though I could get some peon kills. This didn't work, darn! Also, he unloads 4 dt on the left of my base. He probably did this since suggested this earlier in our discussion about how to beat a terran. My siege tank was ill placed and I had to lure his dt into range with my fleeing SCV's. Overall I lost some SCV's, a turret and a supply depot. I finally expanded to my natural, while he expanded to 6's natural.
I comsatted 6 and found 3 stargates and a fleet beacon. Carriers I thought, and that is what often happens. In stead he went mass scouts. I had started massing wraiths but with his observer they didn't fair too well. I mange to raze 6's natural but any offensive of mine other than that was stopped by scouts or speed-upgraded zealots. He killed a lot of my natural with his scouts and started carrier production. I was out resource and out manned, so I basically conceded. I asked if he could describe his base, and I saw like 6 more gateways at 6 and little defense at his main. If I had built more than one barracks I might have been able to raze his main with an infantry drop, but alas I went heavy metal.
The rest of the game was me trying futile attacks and him attacking with like 6 carriers with observer support. Darn, I wasn't gonna killed them all with 3 cloaked wraiths. I conceded the game and left.
The Summation
However this game was not in vain. I learned to scout. Or re-learned, since every other game I forget to. If I had caught his expansion at 6 I might have had a chance. I also didn't expand early enough. I was afraid he would see it with his hack and stop it. I also didn't build enough unit producing buildings. Only one rax and three factories won't do. That seems to be a major problem of mine. I can mass-produce barracks's against zerg but can't seem to do the same with factory when going heavy metal. I also figured out I should have attack earlier and more often. There is no use of letting him have map control and no fear from attacks. I definitely should have attacked before his templar archives went up, or sent a SCV or two for turret supports. Offensive bunkering works very well if you watch out for expansions and drops. Once again my fear of the map hack prevented myself from doing well.
Lastly, I learned that either I'm naive and everyone uses map hacks, or that FlamingFame's is wrong and not everyone uses hacks. I hope its the second option, since its pretty depressing if everyone uses hacks to win a meaningless game like StarCraft. Its fun and all, but its just a computer game. I wasn't even playing ladder! If people have no qualms at cheating at a game, will they so any qualms at doing far worse in the real world? So hopefully FlamingFame is wrong, and mankind is generally good. I sure hope so.
P.S.- I still find it difficult to beat protoss as terran. When going heavy metal, when is it beast to attack? Should my main force be tanks and vultures? What should I use for anti-air if needed? Please leave suggestions in the Comments section. Thank you
P.S.- I hope this works fine. And I hope you enjoyed it. It ended up being longer than I planned.
