A Report Straight From the Front Lines of the New Ladder Season
I know what you're thinking. Same old stuff. A 1on1 ladder game on The Lost Temple. Well bear with me here because this was truly a hilarious game.
Introduction:
For some reason, I'm having a rough time this season. Ladder wins came few and far between at first and I dropped all the way down to 922.
Well, today I was able to work my way back up to a 1012 rating with a 6-7 record. Hoping to reach 1050 by the end of the day, I created another Lost Temple game. The only person to join was some guy named ]}attleCries. His ladder record was 0-2 with a 948 rating. This meant that not only had he lost his first two ladder games, but he had lost to people in the 900 range. After playing a couple of intense 45 minute games, I figured this would be a nice break.
I said, "gl hf" and started the game.
The Build:
As fates would have it, BattleCries chose the protoss race at the last second. And of course, since I went random, the computer gave me terran. BattleCries started at 3:00 and I started at 6:00.
I recently read, and for the life of me I can't remember where, about cheese rushes for Terran and Toss that could almost rival the 4 pool of the Zerg. Terran could do it to by supporting 2 barracks with only 6 or 7 SCVs. I decided to take a shot at it since I wasn't in the mood for a long game.
My build order was as follows:
5 Barrack
6 Barrack
Build Depot after barrack finishes
So I'm supporting 2 barracks with 6 SCVs, however, I made a small miscalculation. I sent 1 of my SCVs out to scout so for quite awhile, I only had 3 SCVs mining minerals. This was not enough to support constant marine production and there were a couple of times when I had an achingly long wait before I had the 50 minerals needed to build another marine.
My scouting SCV scouted clockwise and found the 9:00 and 12:00 positions empty so I had him rendevous with the 6 marines that I was able to build at the entrance to the 3:00 base.
The Rush:
I sent my SCV up the ramp first. There was 1 zealot at the top of the ramp and he got 2 shots on my SCV before my SCV juked left and escaped the blades of the zealot. Another zealot join the first in the great SCV chase and so my marines got a few free shots in before the zealots attacked them. My marines were able to kill the 2 zealots losing only 3 of their number.
Meanwhile, I had started my SCV building a bunker. BattleCries' buildings were built in a 2 row block in front of his mineral line. My SCV was forced to build his bunker on the outside of this building blockade or risk going into the peon line and face the wrath of BattleCries' probes. Because of this, my bunker was in range of only 2 of BattleCries' mineral patches. The protoss buildings included 2 gates, a cy core, a citadel of adun and, you guessed it, a templar archive. Cursing, I started building an engineering bay back at home.
The bunker completed and my 3 remaining marines stepped inside. They blew away 2 probes and were shooting at random buildings when the first 2 dark templar popped out of BattleCries' gateways. My bunker and marines were quickly eliminated and my bungled rushing plan was officially a complete failure.
Back at home, I built a bunker and a turret in my peon line. I still only had about 12 SCVs due to all the microing I had done at my opponents base and I was ready to give the game up for lost. I placed an SCV at my choke to warn me of the incoming dts, not that there would be anything I could do about it.
Sure enough, my SCV popped and moments later, 2 dark templar trotted into my base. The bunkered marines started firing thanks to the one turret that I had for detection. The dark templar didn't even try to attack. They just turned tail and ran.
I chuckled to myself, knowing that those 2 dts could have torn down my one form of detection in about 2 seconds leaving me helpless.
Containment:
I played on, working on building up my pathetic economy. I built a factory and then 2 starports. When the starports finished, wraith production began. I wasn't sure what I would do with the wraiths. I just knew that they couldn't be killed by dts and that was pretty much all I cared about at that point.
I decided to try to start an expansion on one of the islands so I sent one of my SCVs out to an obscure spot on the map to start building a command center to float over to the southeast island. Unfortunately, my SCV never made it past my choke. Those pesky dts were still there blocking my exit.
When I had wraiths building in both starports and 150 in excess minerals, I started construction of a 3rd starport. I was also able to scrounge up enough for an academy so I could build a ComSat station.
I had 7 wraiths but still hadn't researched cloak. I decided that if I was going to use my wraiths offensively, then it wouldn't matter if I had cloak or not because he would surely have cannons for defense. So I flew my 7 wraiths to the top of the map.
If You Can't Go Through, Go Around:
Just before flying in to attack, I scanned his mineral line... No Cannons!! Jackpot. I held my wraiths over the mineral line and began taking potshots at probes.
Suddenly, interceptors started to fly!! OMG, it was carriers!!
I had no cloak so I just charged my wraiths in through the web of interceptors (Insert Top Gun Soundtrack here.)
The battle pitted my 7 wraiths against 2 of his carriers. Interceptors attacked, missiles flew, and in the end, my wraiths were able to kill both carriers only losing one of their number. Then they went back to killing his probes.
It was then that BattleCries spoke.
"YOU HACK!!" he said, and left the game.
I did remember to take a shot of the final score, check this out...

Sorry about the lack of screen shots. I had no idea that this game was going to be worth reporting. I still can't believe I won. You don't see many games where a Toss player outscores a Terran player and still loses.
Anyway, that's enough bragging for one day. Hope you all enjoyed the read.
Cheers
