Since nobody deems my games BR worthy anymore (Probably because I played nothing but Half Life for three months straight up at college), I'm gonna treat you all to my classic (read: old) battle reports from Starcraft.org! No pics for obvious reasons, but try to use your goshdarn imagination. This gem (IMHO) is my first Brood War battle report, so enjoy.
Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Battlereports.com, I give you:
RAGE OF THE DEVOURER
In one of our usual battle sessions, my partner Wererhynadon and I decided to try out some of the new BW maps. Looking in the map editor, I discover a little (or big rather) gem called Primeval Isles. Here's the setup:
Map: Primeval Isles
Me, Weremuppet, Red Zerg, NE
My partner Wererhynadon, Orange Terran, W
vs.
(Something)Baby, White Zerg, NW
ArmandArsante, Green Protoss, SE
As my Hatchery spawned and Wererhynadon's Command Center touched down, I chose not to directly rush to Mutalisks, but first establish a good Spore Colony matrix and work on expanding. I did so, getting Spore Colonies spread over every possible strike site on my island, while at the same time developing a Lair and a second Hatchery within my base. Wererhynadon, at the same time, spotted a White Overlord above his base, and we were then able to conclude that White was above him, and that it was probable that he would do a Mutalisk rush on Wererhynadon or myself. Green compounded this fear by bragging about having upwards of 40 Carriers, which was of course impossible (Supply limit), but nonetheless made us paranoid.
Our fears weren't unfounded, however, as Wererhynadon was soon attacked by less than half a dozen Mutalisks, who managed to kill an SCV but lost one of their own before being driven off by my partners marines. Following this failed attack, Wererhynadon asked me where he should expand, having a Command Center ready to float somewhere. I, having played the map before, told him the best expansion was the center, a massive island abounding with two mining areas, each one with its own Vespene geyser. He did so, and there established a stronghold to protect his high-tech Science Facility and Physics Lab, as well as a Starport. I expanded to my south and got a Spire.
As Wererhynadon was taking the middle, he also scouted fiercely for colonies, and found that White had one in the north position, and Green had one in the south position. From the look of things, Green was not a very skilled player, and so Wererhynadon went about attacking his colony with a series of sporadic drops, but gave up on them when they didn't accomplish enough. At the same time, I was ordered to destroy the White colony. Now, with a freshly spawned twelve Mutalisks and an expansion to my south, I attacked. However, White was not stupid, and had mutated a innocent looking Nydus canal at his expansion. No sooner did my Mutalisks rain death upon the colony did a dozen upgraded Hydralisks pour from the canal, severely damaging my Mutalisk force and making them retreat. Inspired by my foe, my next plan for attack was a Nydus slip.
Coordinating a Comsat of Whites main base, I was able to construct a Nydus Canal right at White's mineral patch, and while it was spotted by some newly hatched White Hydralisks, they were too late to stop the horde of 24 Zerglings that poured out of them. The Zerglings slaughtered Drones and Hydralisks alike, and were it not for the fierceness and number of Whites Mutalisks and Hydralisks, the Zerglings might have turned the entire base into nothing but a pool of blood. I was down 1200 minerals, but I had done my damage.
South of the border, Wererhynadon had given up on his drops and had instead dedicated a small force of Battlecruisers and Wraiths to destroying the unskilled Green, who was still bragging about forces that would go beyond any rational Psi limit, yet still making Wererhynadon slightly paranoid as to the presence of some massive Carrier fleet, which was a possibility given the length of the game and the size of the map. However, Wererhynadon's fleet pushed onward, encounterling little substantial resistance along the way, bombarding what helpless forces the goofy Protoss had left. At the same time, more expansions on both my and Wererhynadon's behalf were keeping white from expanding beyond his limits.
With Green falling and White for the moment contained, we felt positive about the outcome of the battle. That changed fast. A shadow of white appeared in the middle of the map, seen in the view of a group of Wererhynadon's Valkyries. A swarm of nightmarish proportions, evolved and deadly, encroached upon Wererhynadon's supercolony, and attacked. A massive force of Mutalisks, Devourers, and Guardians poured out upon the colony, rending apart SCVs, razing Missle Towers and Command Centers alike. It was too much for Wererhynadon's Valkyries to handle, and they soon were consumed, even though they had weakened the Mutalisks. I had to help. I sent down my own Mutalisks, who were able to take care of White's lack of finesse in controlling his attacks, a was able to eliminate all of White's vulnerable Devourers, at the cost of weakening my own. I then had my Mutalisks travel on, further weakening the attack, but not slowing it down enough.
It was time to fight fire with fire. I selected a group of Mutalisks, and pressing a single button, morphed them into the new and deadly Devourer. I then sent down these monsters, which proceeded to pour upon the enemy numerous acid spores, thus weaking his forces even further, giving my recovering Mutalisks a chance to retaliate, until at last all the Guardians, Mutalisks, and Devourers and their follow-up waves were slaughtered. However, the price was massive. Not a single Terran structure or unit was left standing in the middle of the map, and let me tell you that nothing much left that island either.
"But Master,", you say in an orcish voice, "what about Wererhynadon's Battlecruiser fleet?". Well, Wererhynadon, realizing that his Battlecruisers would arrive too late to save all that much, decided to press his attack onward, and finally destroyed the obnoxious Armand once and for all. The foolish and weak Praetor burned under the fire of Battlecruisers, and left his ally Cerebrate to fare for his own. Now the game began to enter its final phase.
I had expanded again, as had Wererhynadon, who now had a new home for repairing and upgrading his Battlecruiser Fleets. I was acquired two Squadrons of fresh Mutalisks in little time, as well as some Defilers. Having spotted a new White colony near his main, I decided that was where we had to strike next to obtain victory. Taking an Overlord, I dropped my four Defilers on a small piece of lowland right near the colony, and my Defilers, brimming with venom, cast a Dark Swarm above them, and then proceeded to plague the Hatchery of our enemy. This was not lost to the White Cerebrate, however, who then proceeded to try and attack my Defilers with his Mutalisks squardron. Little did he realize the power of Plague! Before the fierce warrior could pull his Mutalisks back, White's Mutalisks felt their bodies withering and decaying, rotting into nothing but weak shells of their former selves. He pulled them back, knowing that time, or a Mutation, would heal them.
My opportunity was open. My Mutalisks poured into his colony, ripping apart the enemy drones and making short work of any strucutres present. The great force, now prepping the way for the now even more impressive fleets of the Terran known as Wererhynadon, proceeded to clean up the remaining forces in the area and move onward to victory. But I could not help but wonder what became of those twelve Mutalisks. My question was soon anwsered.
Like a white streak bolting from the depths of Hell itself, countless Mutalisks, Devourers and Guardians poured forth upon my main Hive Cluster, which was defended by a scant few Hydralisks and Spore colonies. Following this tidal wave of flesh and acid came, like a horde of skulls, a mass of White Overlords, who poured out from their Ventral Sacs numerous nightmarish Hydralisks, who proceeded to then rip open my fortress like a werewolf to a boy scout troupe. Had I my Defilers still at base, I could have placed Dark Swarm over this wave of chilling death, thus perserving its lifespan, but as they were on the other side of the map, I could do little but watch in horror as blood poured from every inch of my once beautiful fortress. White left his Hydralisks to clean up the mess, retreating his air force to now deal with the now present threat of Wererhynadon. My foe was an honorable one, but I would avenge this.
For me, all was not lost. I still had two other Colonies, and my Ultralisk Cavern, with all its upgrades, remained intact for the moment at my dying main. Seizing the opportunity, I quickly mutated eight Ultralisks before the Cavern too was stuck with too many Hydralisk spines to bear living. I then loaded these eight into four Overlords, and dropped them at the northern colony that I had tried to destroy so futily before. This time there was no question who was going to come out of the fight alive. My Ultralisks poured out of the sacs of their Blood Red Overlords, a force of vengance for my Hive and of death to the white Cerebrate who had been such a deadly foe. The Ultralisks quickly decapitated what Hydralisks were present, and then proceeded to rip the now useless base to shreds. White might have been able to Mutalisk those Ultras to death, but he couldn't save his colony.
On an island not too far away, Wererhynadon's substantial fleet had now burned the creep black with laser blasts, and at last the powerful white Cerebrate who had dealt us both massive blows was eradicated. Upon his deathbed, we granted him a vision of our forces, and he, in surprise, cried out at the meekness of what I had left. That cry soon was silenced by the blasts of Battlecruisers. White had fought excelently, though lacking finesse. That and a partner who wasn't a rookie Praetor.
LESSONS OF THE STORY:
CONTROL, CONTROL, YOU MUST LEARN CONTROL!: If White had kept his forces a bit tighter during his assaults, he would not have suffered such massive casualties. Not keeping his Devourers with his Mutalisks was a huge mistake. With the careful use of Defilers, as I had done (Not to brag or anything), he could have easily overcome our attacks.
SOW THE SEEDS OF PARANOIA: Though Wererhynadon will probably disagree with me, Armand, while obnoxious and foolish, did keep Wererhynadon paranoid and occupied by his bragging of a massive fleet. As a result Wererhynadon wasted time killing the bad player when the good one was tearing up his supercolony. This worked to his ally's advantage, though actually playing skillfully would have done his ally a bigger favor.
BE RESILIENT AND PRUDENT: After Wererhynadon's supercolony was destroyed, he did not give up his hope of victory, even though it was possible that he could have been destroyed at the hands of White. Instead he rebuilt his tech elsewhere and proceeded to become a deciding factor in destroying our foe. As for me, when my base came under a massive assault, I chose to make use of what tech was left at the base before it was destroyed, thus producing my massive Ultralisk landing, which did a good deal of damage. And in case of a similar attack on my other two bases, I did make sure to hatch four Defilers at my colony (They were Nydus linked), so as to make sure that Dark Swarm would save me next time. Anyway, reminding you to fight with honor, hoped you enjoyed the tale of battle. Happy Hunting!
