Introduction

For the third game of the SC.org invitational 2v2 Finals between Team SG ([B_Blade]Leader and SSamJang) and Team X’Ds (Crow, Roqu) the map choice was left to chance. The randomnly selected map was Acropolis:

Crow chose white zerg and started in the top position. Roqu selected yellow terran and drew the bottom position. Bladepicked blue zerg in the lower left and SSam went with purple protoss in the upper left. As in the first game, the starting positions favored Team SG with their relative closeness. SSambegan his game with a standard double gateway opening, concentrating on zealot production and building his economy. Blade chose to get a quick second hatchery at his main, followed by an extractor, only then making a spawning pool. Roqu left his main bare and created all his structures at his choke, walling himself in with his first depot and a barracks, then making two factories. Crow followed the example of his partner, placing an early second hatchery at his choke, then using a sunken to fortify it. Crow also made himself an early extractor at both his and SSam’s vespene sources =].

You want blood?

The central part of acropolis is a raised plateau, and it is the only way to move land units from one starting location to another. Seeking to take advantage of this property, Blademade a third hatchery at the top of the ramp leading down to Roqu’s main. Team SG concentrated their early ground forces of zerglings and zealots in the middle. Roqu’s strat left him without significant ground presence for the early game, so the burden of engaging their forces fell on Crow. Crow had initial success with a control group of his zerglings slaughtering four of Blade’s, but ran when SSam brought his zealots into play. Realizing there were only three zealots, Crow turned and engaged the protoss forces, killing two of them with the loss of four zerglings. Bladebrought another control group of his zerglings onto the field of combat and Crow lost all but four of his zerglings as he retreated his forces. A passing bengalaas blocked a key avenue of movement at just the wrong time for Crow, accounting for the death of at least three of the zerglings in their struggle to escape.

Team SG followed up on the lack of reinforcement from Roqu and continued to press Crow. Blade’s control group of zerglings was met at the bridge to Crow’s main by nine zerglings, and lost two of their number before both Crow and Bladeretreated their forces simultaneously. SSam followed the attack with six zealots, attacking over the bridge into the two sunken colonies and waiting zerglings. Bladefollowed closely behind with a new set of zerglings, totaling fourteen in all. Eight of Blades zerglings and two of SSam’s zealots remained when the last defense at the bridge had fallen. Crow quickly morphed two sunkens at his main and produced more zerglings, trying to hold off his opponents. Blademoved in with his eight zerglings while SSam left his zealots dismantling the hatchery at the bridge. Using his drones and four newly hatched zerglings along with the sunkens finishing in the middle of the fight, Crow held off the assault with the loss of a drone and few zerglings.

The terran threat

So where the heck was Roqu while his partner was being abused? I’m glad you asked. He was on the downhill side of four sunkens from the hatchery over his ramp. Roqu didn’t want to spend his initial vultures running through the obvious deathtrap, so he progressed immediately to tanks. Then using a floating barracks to spot for him, he started slowly clearing the sunken field. As he was doing this process, Blademorphed a total of four more sunkens to keep him busy. With the initial victory over Crow and the time that bought Team SG, Bladehad skipped over the more advanced ground troops and went right for a spire. This would let him deal with the massive power of terran tanks without having to face their strengths. Crow also started on a spire, but his setback had put him far behind Bladein the air race.

Roqu finally carved his way through the zerg static defenses, only to be greeted by two zealot and four dragoons. Roqu quickly sieged his two tanks and attacked with his eight vultures. Just as the protoss forces were reduced to one dragoon with the loss of two vultures and a tank, Bladesent in his first five mutalisks. The tank was quickly lost, but Roqu sent the remining vultures on ahead to SSam’s base, then thoroughly mined the entrance. The mines were quick to claim the life of a dragoon attempting to move out from the base. SSam had already moved a probe out of his base though, and as he attacked the four vultures with three dragoons at his base he was busy creating an expansion in the upper right. Blademoved an overlord over to his partner’s base entrance and half of the mines were quickly cleared out. Crow had spotted the protoss expansion and sent eight zerglings over to attack it just as two canons finished warping. He destroyed both of the cannons, but as he did his last zergling fell to a newly created probe. SSam decided to reinforce his new expansion, but as he moved out two dragoons and a dark templar he found out the hard way that all the mines were not in sight range of the overlord and he lost all his troops.

1.03 style zerg anti terran

Roqu had switched from vultures to goliath and tank production. He also sent a SCV to expand in the bottom right, but a drone from Bladehappened on the spot just a few seconds before the command center was about to be completed. Roqu chose to cancel the building as five mutalisks moved in to attack. Those same mutalisks were joined by three more as they moved to Roqu’s main and assaulted his SCV line. Most of Roqu’s forces were being set up for a push on the new protoss expansion and the SCVs were undefended from the attack. Roqu frantically tried to defend with two new goliaths from his factories, but they were not enough against the massed attack of the mutas. Using the distraction he tried to erect turrets around the minerals, but the mutas returned in time to prevent their completion. Two more goliaths again engaged the mutas, but were overwhelmed in short order. The SCVs were being harassed in between the goliath sorties, and Roqu was trying to manage a push at the protoss base during the whole engagement. The slow trickle of two goliaths at a time might have been enough to eventually wear down the zerg forces except Bladekept sending fresh mutalisks as quickly as he could produce them. After two minutes of hit and run raids Bladefinally killed the majority of SCVs and the command center.

In the meantime Roqu had been executing a tank push on SSam’s expansion in the upper right with help from Crow. Crow had provided air support in the form of scourge and mutalisks, while Roqu used tanks to batter down the protoss cannons from a safe range. Crow noticed Bladetrying to expand to the lower right where Roqu had once started a command center and left the push to attack it. His five mutalisks had a good time attacking the newly morphing spore colonies until Blade, having finished with Roqu’s SCV line, moved in a full control group of mutalisks of his own to counter. Even six scourge couldn’t help out Crow’s cause as the enemy mutalisks had reached the point where one volley would kill a scourge.

Clean up time

With the threat to his expansion gone, Bladewas in a position to help SSam defeat the push on SSam’s expansion. The full wing of twelve mutalisks attacked just as SSam’s reinforcement column of seven zealots, three dragoons, an archon, and a templar arrived on the scene. The two remaining goliaths, two tanks, and turret were no match for Team SG’s forces, although Roqu did manage to finally destroy the nexus before losing his forces. With the loss of his forces in the field, and his resource intake, Roqu surrendered the game.

Despite the loss of his partner, Crow was still thirsty for battle. Never one to simply surrender, he was going to make Team SG work for that $5k =]. And work they did:

Congratulations to Team SG on a hard fought series and their victory, and to Team X’Ds for their fighting spirit! Just remember folks, Team SG may have won, but Crow gets the official BadAss award for never ever giving up =]. I hope you enjoyed this report and all the BR.com coverage of this i2e2 event.
