BGH Strat of the Day (A New Zerg Rush)
I know it's been awhile, but I was bored at work today and started trying to think of some more wacky BGH strats. Here is the brainchild that I came up with. If you want to see some of my other BGH reports, simply click here and type the name Drefsab in the author text box.
Prologue:
Anyone who has been playing Starcraft for any amount of time has experienced a Zerg rush. Zerg players have been using their pesky rushes since the Starcraft beta. There is the 4, 6, 7, and 8 pool rushes that get zerglings into an opponents base very quickly wreaking havoc on players who aren't properly prepared.. On island maps in pre-Brood War days, a player had to be able to stop the dreaded muta rush. After Brood War came out, the lurker rush began ripping up Terran players with their subterranean spines.
Well, for all you zerg players out there who are tired of using these rushes, I have come up with a new rush that you can use to spank an unsuspecting opponent. When executed properly, you should be tearing down your hapless opponent's base in 9 minutes flat.
The following is a game I played against RedSamurai.
Initial Buildup: |
The game starts with me at the middle right starting position with Zerg and RedSamurai starting at the top right randoming to terran.
I started the game by building an overlord on 8. Then I used the extractor trick to get an extra drone. I built drones continuously and when I had 200 minerals (which was around drone 13), I started morphing a spawning pool and an extractor. As soon as my extractor finished, I immediately put 4 drones on vespian gas and I had exactly 100 gas saved up when my spawning pool finished. I immediately began morphing a lair.
I chose this moment to send a drone out to scout for RedSamurai's base. I sent him to scout counterclockwise and as luck would have it, the first spot I checked was jackpot. My drone meandered into the terran base not even realizing what he had discovered until 2 marines started pumping him full of lead. The unfortunate drone sacrificed his life to give me the valuable reconaissance information that I needed.
RedSamurai seemed to be going with some kind of infantry push with tanks for support since he had 2 rax and a factory. I knew I would have to hurry if my rush was to be successful.
Back at my base, I immediately started to morph a Queen's nest as soon as my lair finished. I also started work on a second hatchery.
It didn't take long for the nest to finish and I quickly started morphing my lair into a Hive. I also started an extractor on my second vespian gas geyser and put 3 drones on it when it completed. My drone count was now up to 23 and I brought my supply count up to 66 because that's what I would need to support 6 ULTRALISKS!!
My Hive finished morphing and I already had a drone in place waiting to be transformed into my final building... an Ultralisk Cavern. My cavern had just started morphing when a lone marine meandered into my base. Seeing that I didn't have any offensive units or defensive structures, RedSamurai ordered his marine to begin taking pot shots at my drones. I was forced to pull 7 drones off of mining operation to kill the pesky marine. The drones did their work efficiently, only losing one of their number but I was nervous. Where there was 1 marine, more would soon follow.
The Terran Assault:
My Ultralisk Den had just completed when the first terran antagonists arrived at my base. They came in the form of 2 tanks. The tanks seiged up at the entrance to my base and began raining artillery fire down on my hatchery, my ultralisk den, and some of the drones that were innocently mining minerals. Seeing that the tanks were in close proximity to each other, I sent 8 drones out to try to take out the tank threat. Unfortunately for my drones, 3 marines arrived on the scene and quickly put the drones out of their misery.
Trying not to panic, I quickly started morphing my 6 ultralisks with the excess cash that I had saved up while the hive and the cavern had morphed.
The terran bombardment continued. A third tank joined the fun and my ultralisk cavern exploded in a giant splash of red. Luckily, all six of my ultralisks were safely morphing in their cocoons. The tanks started working on my drones until I had very few left.
Things were indeed looking grim.
Here Comes the Rush!!
Finally, my ultralisks hatched from their cocoons. They immediately charged the terran invaders. The tanks got a couple of free shots before the huge blades of the ultralisks rammed into their metallic shell. The marines watched in awe as my ultralisks tore through the tanks and that was the last thing they ever saw as they were gutted by the mighty beasts, almost as an afterthought. The marine's bullets bothered the ultralisks about as much as a fly bothers an elephant.
The rush was on. I took my 5 remaining ultralisks and ran the short distance between my base and RedSamurai's.
Upon arriving in RedSamurai's base, I was met with a resistance force of 2 tanks and 6 marines. 2 more Ultralisks got vaporized by tank fire but my 3 remaining ultralisks prevailed destroying all opposition. They then charged into the enemy peon line and began destroying helpless SCVs.
RedSamurai, knowing that all was lost, surrendered.
The Scores:

So there you have it, The 9 minute, 6 ultralisk rush (and that's on Faster speed). Will this rush become the greatest zerg rush since the 4 pool? Only time will tell. Just remember, if it does catch on, you heard about it here first at Battlereports.com from your resident BGH Strategist, Drefsab.
Thanks for tuning in and we'll see you all next time on the BGH Strat of the day.
Until then, Happy Huntering.
