After narrowly losing a game against two ]CreW[ members, I decide to play a few 1v1s, hopefully one I can report on. I'm pretty motivated as my last report got good ratings and positive responses. I played 2 1v1s, the first being fairly boring as I 2 Hatch Hydra rushed a toss and won it right there. What I'm looking for is not some win by me, I want to report a good game. I have no problem reporting a loss. The next game however, turned out to be a bit more reportable. After shompol joins the game with about a 54-27-4 record, I start it up, and we both random.
Once upon a Time...In a not so Lost Temple called Lost Temple...
VeNoM~Sage (Playing under the name [1.5x2=34]VeNoM) Random Red Protoss right position
Shompol Random Orange Zerg
Okay, the Protoss vs Random situation is not a hard one. Here is my build:
- 8 Pylon (Probe Scout)
- 11 Gateway
- 12 Gateway
- 13 Pylon
- 25 Assimilator
Basically it branches off from there. I check 12:00 only to find it empty, then my Probe heads over to 9:00. In the corner of my eye on the minimap I spy creep, I press "9" twice to see my probe. I always hotkey the scouting Probe to "9", so I can switch over and look at him quickly. This guy was afraid I was Zerg and went 1 Hatch quick gas. My Probe hides way out on his pleateu for now. Back at home I have gotten my assim started. Basically I just pump Probes and Zealots for now, then I send the scouting probe back in for another peek. I see Lair, lings, and that's it. Knowing Shompol though, I know he has another hatch somewhere, and that would be his natural. No sunekns yet.

6 Zealots and 2 Probes are sent immeadiatly. They meet 12 lings on the way, and beat them easily, with only 1 loss. So my parade skips into his natural and ends the lives of the ~6 lings there. However, his larvae are turning into eggs, and I need to get the job done fast. Lings pour down from his main, but they're dispatched by my Zealot/Probe Force. Finally, however, my Zealots are overwhelmed. Thinking quickly, I send the 2 Probes that I sent into the attack back home, clicking on a mineral patch to get them there faster. I leave disappointed. His Hatch was in the red.

Mid Game
Well during that attack I was microing fairly well, but forgot to make units at home. I queue up Zealots, Probes, a Forge and Cybernetics core. I know he's gone quick lair, which at this time I'm interpreting as Muties. So I throw up 2 Cannons at my Nexus, and 1 at the choke. I also add in a 3rd Gateway, a Citadel, and begin goon production. At the speed he went lair, he could have mutas very soon and I dont want to rely on cannons alone as anti-muta defense. I begin work on a Templar Archives, and throw a 4th probe on gas. Knowing that my Zealot/Probe attack did succeed in killing a few Drones and lots of Lings, I figure he's fairly damaged and expand to my natural. I don't want him to vastly outresource me. I expand when I have about 8 Zealots and 6 goons. With the 300 or so gas I have, I queue up 2 Templar. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a quick Zerg Lair against toss is usually a Mutie rush.

I send in a Probe to scout. At his natural I see a bunch of Hydras/Lings and a sunken. Now I'm pretty baffeled. Why would he go quick lair if he's going Hydra. Lurkers are the only thing I can think of. I reasearch storm and get a templar. A pylon and a Cannon go up in front of my natural. I send a Zealot to the middle of the map, where he's immeadiatly killed by about 15 Hydras. And those Hydras are en route to my base. So, I arrange my troops in the best formation possible, expecting a Hydra rush very soon. But none comes. Only about a Minute later does 10 Hydras and about 8 Lurkers attack my now well functioning natural. I send my forces in, and he burrows, the Hydras die fiarly easily, but he tries to lure my forces into the Lurker fire. The cannon can only see a few of the Lurks, but a well placed storm clears out the slimy things, and his force is down to 1 Lurker out of cannon range. About now I begin on a 4th Gate and Robotics Facility.
Lings and Hydras accompanied by a few Lurkers hit my natural. We play a game of cat and mouse, him trying to lure me into his lurkers, and me trying to avoid that fate. Then, finally, my Templar lets loose a huge storm that sends all his Lurks and a few Hydras packing. The lings are then kicked around by my Archon. About now, Ive got my first observer. Now the ball is in my court. I send about 6 Zealots, 8 Dragoons, a Templar and an Archon with Observer support into his mineral only, and spot with the obs. I patrol my forces in, destroying the sunkens and a lot of Hydras. Storm fares well, and he loses many units to it. In the end, he wins out, overpowering me with random ground. Again he holds his natural. When my second obs pops out, I sit it above his natural's cliff. This is where his units are, and it's my main target. He puts up 3 Sunkens in case I follow up my last attack, which I don't (because of the sunkens).
Late Game
Right now, I find myself with a bit of leftover resources. I know this wont last long...my main is almost mined out. I send a probe to 12:00 and triple cannon the ramp, while enforcing it with a temp. I decide to mix up my forces a bit. I make a few DTs, which I found out not long ago actually work very well against zerg. They do massive damage and can stop an attack if the Zerg neglects overlord support. I only make about 3 DTs, though. My forces are all 1/1/0 now. He's 1/2 I believe. Oh, and remember the triple cannoning on the 12:00 ramp? There's an undefended Zerg expansion behind it with 2 Hatches. I send a few ground units to clean it out, and I build a nexus on the little orange lung thing that used to be a hatch.
My observer has been spotting Mutas at his natural, so I throw up 2 Stargate at 12:00. Many Zerg players will go straight to Gaurds in hope you don't know they have air. This would not be the case. Actually, it almost was. About 20 Freaking Mutas and 8 Gaurds start wacking my Natural. The 2 Cannons don't fare well, and neither do the probes :(. But, after TONS of Storms and some help from my first 2 Corsairs, I relieve my Zerg air problem. Not without losing my Natural and most of the Probes there, though. However, this is end game for him. I send 3 Control groups of random toss ground and clear out his natural, then his main. We talk a little bit, as I know he has 6:00 with no defense, I take it out. He said he thought the gaurds had me. I told him so did I =).

This Guy had 10 Muta/Gaurd Kills. That's at least a 1000 Mineral 1000 Gas loss on the part of my enemy.

Analysis
The Zealot/Probe rush is a very good expansion killer. If I had controled my troops a bit better, I would've downed that expansion right there and pretty much ended the game for him. Getting Stargates when you see the Zerg go air (except really early on) seems to be a good idea. He had no Devs or Scourge, just about 20 Mutas to back up his Gaurds. So, I congragulate Shompol for a game well played. I hope you like this br as much (or better) than my last one. Please comment on my and my opponent's strategies. |
