Introduction

This report is a Mark4 Production. www.BattleReports.com is available for all your reporting needs.

This report is on the second game of the contest between Team [9] and Team X’Ds for their i2e2 tournament match. The first game was a closely fought, mainly air, battle on Dire Straits. X’Ds had slowly won air superiority and used their advantage to freely expand, then ended the game with a few drops and air strikes. This battle was due to have a different tempo. X’Ds had forfeited their map choice by not showing up on time for a previous match, and the second game was held on a random map. Using the random map selector, I chose Lost Temple:

Team X’Ds chose their races, Roqu picking terran and starting as white in the left spot, and Crow choosing brown zerg in the right starting location. Team [9] waited until the very last second as the clock counted down, then Kain chose protoss and received purple in the bottom, while NTT picked yellow terran in the top. Johnny_Vegas was my co-referee for the match.

Both terrans started out with a tech build, going for factory units as quickly as possible. Roqu elected to wall in his choke, denying recon to the enemy. NTT left his choke open, and in a surprising move in a 2v2 game, announced he would be going for quick tanks rather than vultures. Kain opened with a standard double gateway build, while Crow placed a second hatchery at the top of his ramp and erected two sunkens for protection. Johnny offered his opinion on the builds we had seen. =]

The first attack of the game was by X’Ds. A mixed force of two vultures and twenty zerglings advanced on NTT’s base, protected by a vulture, four marines in a bunker, and a tank. The defending vulture was killed by the two attacking vultures which carefully stayed away from bunker. Then the zerglings charged in and attacked the tanks, killing it despite the best efforts of the SCVs and the marines in the bunker. Nine zerglings lived to retreat out of bunker range, where they began pounding on the undefended factories. Another vulture from Roqu arrived on the scene and began shelling the hapless yellow SCVs. The bunker’s placement prevented it from being effective in stopping these attacks. Another tank popped out from the factory with a machine shop and was chased down by zerglings as it tried to circle around to the bunker. NTT’s barracks had to be floated and he used his few remaining SCVs to attack the vultures, while a few repaired the factory. Kain finally arrived to rescue NTT with four zealots, losing one of them to the remaining vultures and zerglings. Another died to the quickly placed mines Roqu left outside the ramp.

A new control group of Crow’s zerglings ran at the ramp and overwhelmed the protoss defenders, accompanied by three more vultures. This time when the zerglings attacked the factory they were hit by a blast of arc lite fire and ran to attack the new tank sitting next to the bunker where they were destroyed. Roqu contented himself with mining the heck out of the base from the ramp to the limit of the siege tank fire. A quick test of Kain’s ramp by zerglings revealed three cannons that would stop a low tech level rush, and Roqu lays a few more mines outside Kain’s natural. Crow took this time to expand to his natural.

Kain has been pretty quiet up to now. What did the protoss master have up his sleeve? He started bringing the deadly dark templar into play. One began attacking the SCV making a new command center at Roqu’s natural expansion, and two more attacked the main terran source of income in his main base. Crow swiftly swung into action, moving his overlord near the mineral line as the SCVs ran away. A vulture proved to be too little to stop the dark templar, but a group of zerglings Crow sent into the fray was enough. Unfortunately, in his distraction the place Roqu had sent his SCVs to was his natural, where another dark templar waited to kill the workers. The threat was finally ended by the zerglings and a few new vultures, but not before Roqu’s SCV number was reduced to only double NTT’s =].

With the end of the threat to Roqu, Team X’Ds renewed their assault on NTT. Roqu set up a minefield at the ramp and placed three tanks there just close enough to hit the outlying buildings. NTT had created a dropship and was going to attempt some sort of drop when Crow joined the party with six mutalisks. They quickly destroyed the dropship, then went on to kill two of the defending tanks. Things looked even bleaker for NTT as his factories and starport started burning, but he constructed a second command center on the outlying fringe of his base, perhaps hoping to flee to the upper left island as his base fell. Rightly feeling that NTT was not going to be threat for the rest of the game, Crow left Roqu with his containment and augmented his mutas with more from his main, then paid Kain a visit. Roqu expanded to his natural at this point while Kain did the same. Crow’s mutas fled rather than attack Kain’s new expansion as it was heavily guarded by dragoons and an archon.

Crow sends his mutas over the bottom right island and finds that Kain is preparing to expand there with three cannons already warped in. The full control group of mutas uses focused fire to destroy the cannons with no casualties on their part and puts an end to Kain’s expansion attempt. Back at NTT’s base, NTT is forced to start floating buildings away from the constant barrage of tank fire. One of the more interesting moves he does is to float his engineering bay above Roqu’s natural and keep it there for recon. This gave Kain the info he needed to make his move. As an aside, about this time is when NTT begins complaining about the amount of times the game was saved. After being admonished by Johnny to quit whining he explains how he deserves to whine because he couldn’t practice with his partner, play starcraft except on weekends etc. Heck, he should have just used my excuse of not having any skill =]. Kain’s force of seven zealots, a dark templar, five dragoons, an archon, and an observer all attack straight into Roqu’s main. Roqu defends with three tanks and three vultures on the low ground, and a well placed tank on the high ground. Roqu lures the zealots into a mine field before the observer can spot for the dragoons to clear it out, inflicting casualties on the melee troops. Roqu loses his forces as the protoss troops press inwards, but scores a few critical hits with mines placed deeper in his natural. It is enough damage that when Crow sends in his mutas, they are able to take out the archon in only two volleys, and with the aid of the high ground tank finish off the dragoons. A control group of zerglings moves in to clean up the remaining dark templar as NTT finally contributes some actual help with a wraith. It ends up only chasing away a science vessel as Crow’s muta force has already departed to interdict the command center floating to the upper left island. Johnny makes a quick observation on the results of the game so far.

Crow makes the next attack, moving his eight mutas over Kain’s cliff and morphing them into guardians. They quickly force Kain to run his probes from the minerals, and attempt to engage the guardians with his dragoons. Kain’s four dragoons soon fall to the six guardians at the point they tried to stop the attack, killing only one guardian. Kain starts bringing down templar from his main while Crow takes advantage of the distraction his attack poses to expand to his mineral only natural and to NTT’s natural. It wasn’t like NTT was going to be using it after all =]. Kain forces a little respect out of Crow with two well placed psi storms killing two guardians. Crow pulls his guardians back for a moment, then sends them in widely spaced. Roqu gets in on the action by dropping a few tanks into the party. Kain still has a few zealots at the entrance to his natural, and he uses them and his fled probes to attack the tanks rolling in. NTT keeps up his floating engineering bay trick, sending it over Crow’s natural while making vultures from his factory. Johnny and I had a little trouble figuring out exactly what he was going to do with them. A few zerglings join the attack but the probe and zealot combination is enough to fend them off. Kain drops a few more psi storms on some guardians to register his disgust with whole situation. Realizing that Kain is out of storm when he starts morphing two archons from the templar, Crow sends his guardians in to take out the cannons at the ramp, but the archons form a little faster than he bargained for and catch the guardians when they are directly overhead, quickly killing them. Roqu has set up an expansion on the top left island and it is fully functional.

NTT makes one last bid at being a factor in the game. With four wraiths he attacks the blockade at his ramp, killing two tanks. Roqu’s charon boosted goliaths were already on their way however, and they quickly brought down the wraiths with the help of a few scourge from Crow. With the destruction of his last chance, NTT left the game. With the departure of his ally and his expansions all destroyed, Kain no longer feels he has a chance and also departs the game. Total game time was 26:21

Congratulations to both teams on a game hard fought, and to X’Ds for prevailing.
